This tutorial explains how to setup and run Linux from a USB Flash Drive (Stick). The tutorial has 5 chapters: Chapter 1 - Installation of Linux on the stick Chapter 2 - Create a Data Partition Chapter 3 - Setup of Mint Mate Chapter 4 - Space Management Chapter 5 - System backup/imaging I use Mint Mate 16 (Petra) as example, but the method can be applied to any Linux Distro. Only Chapter 3 is specific to Mint Mate. Because of my fancy page setup I do not display the tutorial here, but you can read it in your browser or download it from my OneDrive site. It is an 8 page PDF document with all the controls to 10 instruction and demo videos. You ca…

When I first started using Linux, you could run over the end of a line in a virtual terminal and it just carried on printing on the next line. You could see the whole of your line at a glance. Nowadays, when you reach the side of the screen, the text jumps to the left and the beginning of the line disappears. You can only get it back by moving left with the arrow key, and then of course you can no longer see the end of the line. I think these are framebuffer consoles - they seem to be compulsory when you have a modern video chip with mode-switching selected. Does anyone know what kernel flags I could use to get back the old behaviour? Continue reading...

Hello everyone I was hoping someone much smarter than me could help me out. Admittedly I am a complete noobie at Linux and would like some help. The story unfolds thus... I am setting up a home F5 load balancing lab using the virtual editions, VMware player and Apache running on Ubuntu to simulate my back end servers to which I load balance inbound traffic. What I would like to do is this: when I browse to the F5's virtual IP and it then load balances that connection to one of the 3 web servers I have, rather than just displaying any string of text that happens to live on the page I've browsed to, I'd like it to display something like: "Your source IP addr…

Greetings: I really need help. I have Mint Petra 16 (32bit) on a USB hard drive on one port of my XP laptop, and "Porteus 3.0" on a flash on another. I don't know whether Porteus was actually responsible or not, but my problem with Petra occured immedoiately after reboot: While Petra was still hooked into one port, I booted up Porteus to rearrange and resize its desktop icons via its .gtkrc-20 file, and inadveratntly while shuffling a desktop icon to a seemingly empty area I got a "can't copy to this partition" warning when I wasn't trying to copy or overlap another icon. I don't know if the warning pertained to the Petra drive. I then rebooted into Petra and it sto…

Whether you're learning your way around a new city or just want delay alerts, these are the best transit apps for iPhone Looking for the best iPhone apps to help you master transit directions? When Apple ditched Google for their own map data in iOS 6 one of the casualties was transit. While rumors persist that we might get transit back in iOS 8, for the last year and a half anyone who wanted to go anywhere on on bus, train, or subway/metro had to rely on a third-party transit app to do it. Luckily there are many apps in the App Store to help you navigate public transit, but to get alerts about delays and outages. But which transit apps are the absolute best? Google …

If you've had an iPhone or iPad with cellular networking for any length of time you've probably been notified about a carrier update. Some are mandatory and don't give you an option to say refuse or to be reminded later. Others just bug you occasionally until you actually perform the update. But why? What are they, what do they contain, and what do they want from us? Carrier updates are used to help your iPhone and iPad communicate with the carrier network. These files typically contain information concerning voice networks, cellular data, voicemail settings, personal hotspot, and any other service your carrier provides. For example, with the recent AT&T visual voi…

Want to keep your roommate from posting your nude selfies on Facebook? Concerned that your Mac might fall into the wrong hands? It comes with a few consequences and drawbacks, however. So let's say you love geography, and you also love trivia. Well Google has just made your day by introducing Google Maps-powered "Earth From Above" challenge category to the game QuizUp. The topic is pretty self-explanatory — each round is a satellite image of some place on earth, and you'll be given options to choose from of where you think the location is. Just like other QuizUp topics you can easily challenge your friends or random people to the Earth From Above section, as well as check out current rankings and discussions on the topic. You can grab a download of QuizUp from the link below if you haven't yet given the game a try. Source: +Google Maps Free - …

Okay, I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade my XP OS. The reason I'm hesitant is that I don't browse the internet (no IE, no chrome, no firefox), I don't check email, I don't have file sharing programs. My computer is connected to the internet, I suppose it's because I did download programs in the past. So my question is: If I'm doing nothing with the internet, but let's say I keep the internet plugged in, what risk is there to my system data? Continue reading...

I have emptied my inbox, junk, draft, deleted, sent mail boxes and archived everything else. Please help as I am waiting for extremely important emails (regarding job offers etc). I would rather continue to use this account than switch to gmail or similar, however I may not have a choice if this is not resolved asap. Thank you Thought I might add that I have received an email from Microsoft into this account so this makes it even more confusing as to why it can receive this and no other email? Help! It came out in March when I was using my Microsoft Word. I had totally restarted my laptop for three times as this blue screen came out for three times. After that my laptop had became very slow, I mean extremely slow. It took me about 10 minutes just to switch on my laptop. So I format my Windows 8 myself and everything look fine just like a new one until today. This blue screen came out again, same error code when I was browsing the net. I took it to a computer repair shop, they checked my hardware and said nothing was wrong. So I wonder if my hardware was fine, could it be the problems of the Windows? ( just guess ) Hope I can get a …

Hi, I have a Windows 8 domain joined device which is logged in with a standard account. I have setup the Mail App to connect to the corporate Exchange system. When trying to sync the message "Make your Windows user account an administrator". I have read many of the articles (some shown below) on what EAS policies are supported and that they should be equal to your GPOs but I'm still having little success. The only way I can get the system to sync is to disable require password. This then allows the client to sync. I've looked at the following but can't find the Turn on pin sign on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn282287.aspx I've …
