Installed Chromium just to give another web browser a try. Been using Firefox for so long I wanted to see what all the fuss was about over Chrome/Chromium. Seems to be a blue million apps for it. Looks easy enough to get around on. Also seems very fast. Did some research on how to set it up to not cache anything but it seems that it's not that easy to do like Firefox where you just set the cache size to 0MB. Guess I'll figure it out though. Anyway, how many of ya'll are using Chromium vs Firefox or even both? Just wonder which you like and why? Continue reading...

Now, when I put in live cd of Ubuntu 13.01, the installer reads the disk as "free space" while the "Disks" app in the Ubuntu applicaitons, reads the partitions correctly. How do I go about installing Ubuntu? I'd like to keep it as a a dual boot. My bios as I've seen is legacy as in, no uefi. Please help. Thanks, sun Continue reading...

Do you want to see Gaming on the next Apple TV? Amazon dropped a bomb this week with the introduction of its Fire TV set-top box and included gaming capabilities. It's a similar yet different product to our own Apple TV, but it does give us plenty to look at when thinking about what we'd like to see next from Apple. So, would you like to see integrated gaming included on the next version of the Apple TV? We do have AirPlay already, of course, that can give us a rudimentary gaming experience using our iPhone or iPad with the Apple TV. There are even specialist games which 'project' a gaming screen to the TV while turning the device in your hand into a controller. But…

The U.K's EE network is set to increase prices by 2.7% — yes, two-point-seven-percent — on May 28, 2014. EE's new terms and conditions allow them to raise prices by the RPI (retail price index — i.e. the rate of inflation) once a year with 30 days notice. Here's the relevant bit from EE: You will see a 2.7% increase to your monthly plan charge on any bills you receive from the 28th May, if you joined or upgraded to a 12, 18 or 24 month Pay Monthly or Small Business contract before the 23rd January 2014. This increase is in line with the Retail Price Index (a measure of inflation) published by the Office for National Statistics on the 25th March 2014. If you joine…

With its latest iWork update, Apple has made most AppleScript users happy. Hopefully it'll take remaining complaints as seriously As Apple released OS X 10.9 Mavericks last fall they also introduced new versions of their iWork applications — Keynote, Pages and Numbers. The new release created major disruptions for long-time iWork users who depended on automation workflows that were no longer available in the new releases. Out with the old, in with the new iWork was long in the tooth: The last significant revisions to the apps were made four years before in 2009. But the underlying code that made the applications run was much older than that. Much had changed in…

T. S. Elliot once said, “What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” So as we put one season to bed, let’s start another by looking at the April security updates. Today, we release four bulletins to address 11 CVEs in Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office.

I will be installing Windows 8 Pro here shortly. My question involves problems that may arise later on. If I ever have to re-install Windows 8 I’ll need, I assume, to reinstall Windows XP first because I don’t have a ‘stand alone version’ of Windows 8. (I think ‘stand alone version’ phrase is correct. I’m referring to software that doesn’t need a previously installed approved OS on the disk to install W8.) It may be, that I’ll get asked for my XP product key and I won’t actually need XP installed but I doubt it. So my question is how many of the XP updates will I need for this Windows 8 upgrade disk to install W8? Is just the basic XP install disk, which I got prei…

I can't open messages sent by Microsoft Technical Support. I called the Help line and they didn't know what to do and said to send another message to Technical Support which I did. Tech Support sent a reply which I also could not open. I called the Help line again and they gave me an address for Hotmail message help and they responded telling to go and search the community forums which again I did. All I found was to clear cookies but this didn't do anything. I tired reading on a second computer both on Firefox and IE but just got the same answer that I can't view the incident. I also tried resetting my passwords but again this did nothing. Does anyone kno…

I have a custom built desktop running Windows 7. In December of 2012, I upgraded it to Windows 8, before reverting back to Win7 in October of 2013 due to graphics tablet issues. Now that I use my Surface Pro for all my art needs, I'd like to upgrade my desktop back to 8 using the same DVD I used before. Since it's the same system with the same hardware, will I be able to do this or will I need a new key? Continue reading...

I just bought a new computer and am using Windows 8 for first time. I migrated old accounts over, and did not like the way that some user account names showed up or the way that the folder names of them showed up in windows explorer. I made the mistake of renaming a user folder name for one limited account from an account with administrative rights. Now the limited account is useless. It has lost its association with all information about it. Is there some way that I can restore the association? The trouble is that I am not sure what name the folder had before. It already did not match the user account name. I changed the folder name back to what I thought it was …

I am having trouble with file sharing! I use two computers in "running" a track and field meet. One computer holds the meet files/events. The second uses a program to time the running events. I can move files from the event computer and use them in the timing computer. When I try to send them files back to the event computer for scoring and recording I have trouble. I get a notice I don't have permission to save to this file. I am the administrator for both computers and have full permission on both. I have now tried for several days to find the permission error and correct it withno luck. What am I doing wrong? I didn't have this problem when using XP. …

I would like to be able to track my own usage of my computer including the programs I use and the files I open. I am a CPA and I often have to look at files for multiple companies and individuals and I just don't have the time to write down every thing I do. I used to use Track4Win. It worked well but seemed unnecessarily complex. I am monitoring myself so the software doesn't have to be hidden. Internet usage is not my primary concern. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks, Ed Continue reading...
