Apple's requirements for apps sold in the Mac App Store prevents many useful utilities from being made available. Should Apple change its tune on sandboxing? I've written before about some of the limitations that Apple imposes on game developers who want to sell their games through the Mac App Store. The problem isn't limited to games — Apple's rules for how Mac App Store apps work keep lots of different apps from being distributed. The year after the Mac App Store launched, Apple announced that apps sold using the service would have to be sandboxed. Sandboxing is a security technique that's been around since the dawn of iOS apps — it restricts the access that an ap…

iCloud does a great job of storing and syncing contacts between iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It can also be used to create contact groups to help you better, faster connect with the people that matter to you most. Unfortunately, contact group creation currently can't be done on the iPhone or iPad. They have to be created on the Mac, or via iCloud.com online. How to create contact groups using iCloud.com Launch a web browser on your PC or Mac and go to iCloud.com. Log in to your account and click on Contacts. In the bottom left click on the plus sign. In the popup menu, click on Create Group. Name the group anything you'd like and hit Enter on your keyboard to create …

I have had this laptop just shy of 4 weeks where errors have started to occur- got the BSOD where it said kernel inpage error/security check failures. So I refreshed it, hoping to fix the problem. This did absolutely nothing. So used various methods to fix it and the SFC tool has revealed it is caused by windows.ui.xaml.dll.mui corruption in the stores- as copied from the log below. 2014-04-07 17:28:41, Info CSI 00000ba4 [sR] Beginning Verify and Repair transaction 2014-04-07 17:28:41, Info CSI 00000ba5 [sR] Repairing corrupted file [ml:60{30},l:58{29}]"\??\C:\Windows\SysWOW64\en-US"\[l:46{23}]"windows.ui.xaml.dll.mui" f…

I'm having some issues with machines hanging at please wait... with errors 5719 then 1055 in the event logs. On the KB article it's not clear what setting is used from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\History to set the timeout as it's not one we're defining via group policy. I'll of course do some testing using group policy to define the setting to a test OU, but if anyone does know if either CurrentWaitAtStartup or AvgWaitTimeoutAtStartup is the value used to determine the timeout I'd be very intreasted to know. It could also be some other value entirely they just look like the two most possible options form that KB art…

Windows Defender did not detect some HKLM files that were flagged as malicious by Malware Bytes scan of My Windows 8.1 Pro system. Some of these included end directory descriptions of HKLM/.... /suprasaver etc. Was Defender missing these, or was Malware Bytes overly aggressive? Both were up to date. also, from what I have been reading, Windows Defender is not the overall security system that Microsoft SecurityEssentials was. Does this mandate continuing with two different security systems, and why would Microsoft Windows eliminate MSE this from Windows 8.1 Pro if this is the case? Continue reading...

We JUST switched to Windows 8.1 and during that process, my husband accidentally agreed to install a few super annoying programs. He thought they were relevant to Windows 8.1, but now we realize that some of them are not. We have tried to remove Quiknowledge, but it seems to have embedded itself somehow. My husband removed it from the Control Panel, but we can see that it is still in the C drive. We tried to delete it from there, but a error message pops up saying that the program (Quiknowledge) cannot be deleted because it is currently in use. Do we need to purchase an anti-malware program to remove it? Ideas? Also, are the other programs I mentioned (Lin…

Just added McAfee to a PC that had been running without virus protection. Problem is all the junk that got on before the wall and scanning went up. The computer is really slow and bogged down with pop-ups. I am hesitant to load any third party software to clean it up, when it was probably third party software that caused the problem in the first place. This is not my computer. I am trying to help a computer-hesitant friend (hence the virus protection gap). Any suggestions? Continue reading...
