The listed monthly update ISOs for XP start January 1012 and as of this writing, end at December 2013. At what month do I need to begin retrieving the update ISOs so I can update XP SP3 seamlessly until XP's end of support on April 8, 2014? That is, SP3 is a compendium up updates to a certain date, say January 2008 for example. That would mean I would retrieve all updates starting with February 2008 through the end of available updates for XP. Starting at what month do I need to retrieve the monthly ISO releases to acheive this? Continue reading...

So i recently had to do a system recovery on XP. This is like the second time i did it on this computer. So i did the recovery , restored my files but now i can't be on the internet for long or my computer locks up. When i have my earphones on it makes a little buzzing sound and then it freezes up with the sound continuing but the screen is frozen. At first my computer couldn't be on the internet for longer than 5-10 minutes. I then did malware search removed all of that. Did a driver upload and i can run it for at least an hour. When i try to play a game it's sketchier, it makes a buzzing sound as if it wants to crash but it doesn't do so. Any idea what this …

I've created a Windows Live account for my daughter to use, jumped through the authorization hoops, and added it to a tiny Windows 8 laptop I'd like her to use for homework. She is set up as a standard user with Family Safety (not at a very restrictive level, everything off but web filtering). When I log on with her account I am shown some new background image I'm not familiar with with the time and date displayed prominently at lower left and icons for wireless signal and battery status. That display is not functional; any key press or swipe returns the computer to the user selection display. I'm not sure whether to characterize this as being unable to log on o…

I searched microsoft support for how to set a connection as metered for my Desktop, there i found and tried these steps- Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.) Tap or click Network, and then tap or click Connections. Tap or click the connection you want to change, and then, under Data usage, turn Set as a metered connection on or off. BUT, surprisingly there is no "network" option in my 'pc settings' of my Desktop! i am using an iBall 3G wirel…

Very simple. Want a screen snip of the Start screen (with all the square tiles) in Windows 8. Also, want a screen snip of the screen while in the Mail App. Can't see a way to do this. I launch the "Snipping Tool". But, when it launches, it eliminates the screen that was under it (unlike in Windows 7). So, how do i do this. Want a snip of the screen that is showing all the large tiles for the different apps, and says "Start" at the top. Also, want a snip of what the screen looks like in the mail app. I want this in order to annotate these things and help somebody. So, how do you do it. (Tried ctl-PrtScr that works in Windows 7 and earlier t…

For the mail app, I want to change the font size. That is, the size of everything on the screen when i am looking at and reading mail (don't as much care about the font size in mail that i compose). By this, i refer to both the list of mails that is on the left of the screen, where it lists who it is from and the subject, and the right of the screen, where the mail message content of the selected mail is displayed to read. Actually it could just be a "zoom" type setting as well, not necessarily font size per se. Just want everything i am seeing on the screen, reading, to be bigger. Have looked under "settings" and "help" and cannot find anything about this in either p…

I get over 500 GB files in HDD, but the speed on traditional HDD is too slow and SSD is too expensive for 500 GB,. I would like to know how to set SSD drive as RAM drive, so the frequenctly used files would be kept on this drive for fast accessing performance. 125 GB would be enough for those files. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to setup SSD drive for this purposes? Thanks in advance for any suggestions Continue reading...

Hi, I have only recently tried to transfer the rest of my applications to my Windows 7 machine. They all load and run pretty well, even an older 4GL (Progress), except that I cannot get the decimal point to work on entry or on display. I can "fiddle" programming to display 123.45, but can't get to enter eg 5.1 - I would have to enter 510. Progress always defaulted to 123,456.78 format but had a startup option (-E) to choose European format (123.456,78). In Windows 7 I always get the European, with or without the -E. It always worked correctly on XP, on Server 2001, 2003 etc. I have tried running the compatibility troubleshooter and XP mode without success. This a…

While surfing around the net. I was hit by a bug. It locked my screen with an official looking page demanding payment. I shut down, and upon reboot the page popped up again. I read it, and chuckled to myself about the idiocy of some folks. Shut down, swapped drives and fired back up again. Scanned the affected drive with MSSE, and MSERT. SE returned that it had found a "booger": Trojan win32Peaac. Apparently it had sucessfully removed that booger. So I went back to my old drive, reboot, and it pops up again. So I boot into safe mode and run another scan. It gives me a directory. "...documents and settings/application data/rrvg4l" Never heard of it. So I…

Websteroids downloaded onto my laptop whilst I was downloading Nokia PC Suite from a site called File Parade. I have tried to uninstall websteroids many times but find myself unsuccessful each time. They refuse to leave when I go to the control panel and uninstall. I have tried other recommendations, reset internet options on my laptop, etc etc. They are still there. I wouldn't be too worried about them, however I believe they are stopping me from accessing a heap of websites. Since they came onto my laptop, I can't access sites such as eBay, yahoo, gumtree and many more. I type the website in the URL and it appears to load for a short period of time. then just stops and …

Hi there, I was (foolishly) messing around with my partition sizes, now whenever I turn on my computer I get the error message in the title. I'm very new to Linux, but I knew that if I typed in 'ls' it would come up with all my partitions and then I could type in ls (hdx,y) and some other stuff afterwards and it would boot from that partition. Unfortunately whatever partition I try, I always get 'error unknown filesystem' What do I do? Thanks Continue reading...

Hi I have a SNAP SERVER 2200 (an old external NAS device) which has broken. I have taken the 2 160GB HDD's out of it and they seem fine, but I'm struggling to access the files on there. It seems to use some sort of Linux RAID and though I've tried pretty much every piece of recovery software out there, none have gotten me access to anything useful. I have had some success recovering MS Office files on there and JPG's, but even these are sparse compared to the sheer amount I know should be there. Now, forgive my total Linux newbie-ness, but should it be possible to build a small PC, load Linux on there, and then add these disks - if so, how then do I get Linux to re…

Apple has updated their "Your Verse" site — that's the new ad campaign for the iPad Air — with a piece about how Bollywood choreographer Feroz Khan uses his iPad to capture different scenes and other inspiring pictures and video. As a Bollywood choreographer, I don't just direct dance movements. I also scout locations, help choose costumes and props, and stay in touch constantly with the team. I depend on my iPad Air for all of it. — Feroz Khan Apple tells us how Khan uses his iPad with apps like SloPro and Artemis HD to bring his ideas to life. It's a really great read, and shows how well modern technology can do more than just play Candy Crush Saga. Source…
