I have a new computer and am in the process of copying my files (using an external hard drive) from my old C:\ drive to my new one. Everything went very smoothly except: There is a folder in my Windows Explorer "Documents and Settings". I never use it because I have set up my own "filing system" based entirely on Windows Explorer folders and sub-folders. However, Windows continues to put "stuff" into "Documents and Settings". When I tried to copy this folder (to be on the safe side) copying was denied because of the presence of files NTUSER.DAT and ntuser.dat.LOG in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator and NTUSER.DAT and NTUSER.DAT.LOG in C:\Documents and Settings…

Hi, I bought a Microsoft Sculpt Comfort bundle last week (Keyboard + Mouse: Connection by USB, NOT bluetooth) My keyboard and mouse works fine and I have no problem using it. However; I wanted to configure my mouse in Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center (Ver 2.0.162.0), but after installation of the program, microsoft mouse and keyboard center could not detect my device. I tried everything that was suggested by the troubleshooting suggestion, ex plugging into another USB port, didnt use a USB hub, restarted my computer, but nothing seems to work. I checked on the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center compatible device list and saw that the Sculpt …

Hello there, here I have a question to ask about my computer security. I have a laptop running Windows 8. I have Kaspersky security on it right now but the contract is almost up and I am wondering if I should switch to Defender or renew Kaspersky. I read that I can't use MSE with Windows 8, and I don't know much about Defender. Is it enough by itself? Is it comprehensive protection? Thanks Continue reading...

I know I can go to services but it doesn't appear there... I can't start Windows Defender to clean the virus neither search for the Defender in services to turning it back on, I'd really appreciate help asap EDIT: I found the virus somehow (VNC Address Book) but can't delete it because it is opened in "wservice.exe".... so any ideas? EDIT2: I successfully deleted the file but the problem is still here, I can't get Defender ON. ADDITIONAL INFO: This virus says that Windows Defender (MSASCui.exe) can't be located when I try to open it, doesn't let me open Norton Utilities and deleted almost all of my shortcuts in the Start. <moved> Continue r…

Is there a way to query the system for the total number of resources scanned on a previous run of Defender (mpcmdrun.exe)? Per "GreginMich" back on 20130405, he didn't think that "the number of items scanned is retained anywhere." Is that true? I see some hex values in ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Support\MPRegistry.txt, but they don't appear to translate to the decimal "resources scanned" value I see upon completion of a GUI Defender execution. Thank you in advance. Continue reading...

Just had to tell everyone that I'm really lovin' my Manjaro/Xfce install. Way easier then I thought it be to run something "Arch" and the AUR has just about anything and everything you'd ever want to run on your computer. I'm finding all the software that was wanted and it doesn't matter that I'm running an Arch Stable platform, it's still all there for the taking. With Debian to get what I needed I had to run Testing and then things like Gdebi wouldn't work, oh well, you've seen my threads but with Manjaro it's just working. Also, I've got Xfce set up and tweaked to look and work for all the world like MATE, which is what I was use to using. I think until I get to the …

starts off simple, but gets MUCH MUCH WORSE I seem to have successfully mounted a USB with Code: dd if=./Desktop/debian-live-7.4-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4M; sync and got: dd if=./Desktop/debian-live-7.4-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4M; sync 294+1 records in 294+1 records out 1235451904 bytes (1.2 GB) copied, 204.681 s, 6.0 MB/s is this an indication of success? the usb seems to contain nothing yet it seems very very full and I will explain why I say that. upon checking the properties, contents: nothing free space: 3.6 GB 12.3 GB used total capacity: 16 GB how can this be if the debian.iso is only 1.2 GB  the…

I am having a hard time figuring this out and was hoping someone could give me a hand with this. Several of my CentOS 5.10 servers are causing a lot of 531 log on failures on all of my windows servers (all versions). Iv WireSharked this and can see the attempt to connect attempt to \\SERVERNAME\IPC$ as Guest however I am still unable to figure out exactly how to stop it from happening. Below is the audit failure I am seeing on the windows server and attached is the pcap. Any advice and assistance with this would be greatly appreciated. I don't even want to do much in the live environment of debian wheezy, I just want to use it so that I can install debian wheezy and save my computer, and I hope I really will love debian. I can't install any repos or anything because they don't work, my whole linux mint is falling apart and my com…

Are the best games on Android or are the best games on iPhone? That's a question that's becoming increasingly important to both Apple and Google, and they're reportedly willing to help developers get massive marketing pushes in exchange for periods of exclusivity for hot new games. This will come as a surprise to precisely no one familiar with the console market, or the basics of running any store, real-world or virtual. Mario, Sonic, Halo, and other exclusive franchises made the console wars of the past, and on mobile, and for iOS and Android, that's now translating into Plants vs. Zombies 2, Cut the Rope 2, and many others. Ian Sherr and Daisuke Wakabayashi, writing for…

Facebook, the world's most popular social network, is reportedly looking to get into the lucrative mobile ad game, perhaps as early as their F8 developers conference set to kick off in San Francisco on April 30, 2014. Facebook has been serving their own ads for a long time now, but this would be a way for developers to integrate Facebook ads into their own apps and services, and it would bring Facebook into direct competition with Google's AdMob, Apple's iAd, among others. Mike Isaac, writing for Re/code: Facebook will pitch the ads to publishers and developers as a way to leverage the social network’s vast database of user information for better ad targeting. And F…

Have an original Apple TV that's suddenly unable to connect to the iTunes Store? You're not alone. It looks like many, many people in many, many parts of the world are suffering from exactly the same outage. There's no word yet on what caused it, though there is speculation that it might be related to a recent security update on Apple's servers, perhaps to deal with the Heartbleed OpenSSL vulnerability. There also doesn't seem to be anything that fixes it at the moment either, which is especially frustrating for people. Apple stopped selling the original, OS X-tiger based Apple TV in 2010 following a switch to the iOS-based Apple TV 2 and later, the 1080p Apple TV 3…

Don't companies realize that when you tell someone something 10 times its kind of demeaning and insulting? How can they possibly be so dense? Its like a phone system that tells you every 30 seconds to not hang up for fastest service. Is there anyone on the planet that thinks they'll get helped faster by hanging up? Its like a lot of software designers just don't think like 99% of the population. They may be brilliant in their own area but when they interface to the public at large they're just a total failure. The answer is to partner them with average thinking people. THEN you'll have a product that works. The biggest companies in the world are completely in the …

Recently I noticed that Power Options in Control Panel is blank. I can't create anything or do anything there. Could something in Services.msc have disabled this? Anywhere else I should look? I can't Shut Down, Restart or put it in Standby. Also when I start the computer (after using the hardware Reset button on the computer case) it doesn't remember my User Name. It asks me every time. There is no password. I just hit Enter after entering my User Name. Continue reading...

I'm on an xp machine, and I have a mono semi professional mic, meaning it will only record one channel. I know that youtube makes it stereo(not sure how it works, never tried it) But I need it for live casts. Continue reading...

I got tired of MsMpeng.exe consuming high CPU, so I removed MSE, rebooted and am going to install Avast free on my XP machine, I used MicrosoftFixit to remove MSE, but I still see MsMpeng.exe in task manager at 90% CPU ! I built a computer for my wife and it has performed wonderfully until a month ago when she told me she thought she had a virus because her PC was really slow. She was correct and I found and cleaned several threats from her machine. Even created a Kaspersky boot cd and did a cleaning from that. I have gotten rid of all detected viruses at this point. I have run full scans with Kaspersky, AVG, Norton 360, Spybot, Adaware, Webroot and Hitman Pro. All of these have reported no threats. Machine was still painfully slow so I started following threads on here. I have used msconfig to take everything out of the startup. I have optimized, defragged and gotten rid of unused progra…
