Last night, I created an image in paint and saved it as a PNG image like I always do in my Jump Drive (exterior drive, USB drive, etc. there's many names but I call it jump drive) but today I was unable to open it saying: "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or it's format is not currently supported." I didn't alter the image in any way in any other program and I can open it in the photo viewer. Please respond, I'm very nervous I'll lose it and I've worked on it for days and I'm very new to this so I don't know much about computers and this is my 1st time asking for help so I have no experience with computers and please make it as simple and eas…

Many people ask about icons that rearrange after reboot. My issue is icons that spontaneously go out of alphabetical order, normally when they're covered up by other windows. But I finally saw it happen when I was doing nothing. I have auto arrange turned on and sort by name and I want them that way. But one icon that starts with "U" will just suddenly move to the end of the list after two "W" icons. These are all in the desktop folder for my user - not the all users folder. This happens all day every day. Continue reading...

Hi. I recently discovered that somehow (think it was my son) LaFlurla was downloaded onto my laptop when something else was being downloaded. What i need is help getting rid of this stubborn and annoying Malware browser hijacker. CANNOT be uninstalled from the control panel, as all that happens is an error message comes up. Norton didn't even pick it on scans, other than when i tried to uninstall it, then it started blocking some exe's after the eror message came up. I also researched a bit online, downloaded a removal program which did nothing, and and adwcleaner, which also was useless. I am now constantly having to use add block to stop the…

I clicked my windows start button and found "Reset to recommended settings" highlighted in red. I right clicked it to see the properties and then went to Windows to try to identify the command and it seems to be unheard of. Through further research, I found out that it may be malware. Can anyone identify this? If so, what should I do about it? "C:\Program Files (x86)\K-Lite Codec Pack\Tools\CodecTweakTool.exe" /resetsettings Continue reading...

I downloaded a file from the Internet but when my anti-virus package did a security scan it couldn't say if it was safe or not. I therefore decided to abort the download. The following day when I connected to the Internet rather than it starting my Yahoo home page I got a message saying from a website called conduit.com that it had found some registry errors and invited me to download a PC registry cleaner to deal with it. The message box said it was a Microsoft partner and had a Yes and No button. The No button was greyed out so couldn't access it. I therefore got very suspicious and have ignored it and can only access the Internet by going into my Favourites and do…

Is it just me or does it seem kind of fishy that the Heartbleed Bug hit the airwaves at the same time as when XP reached End of Life. When so many folks are going to switch to Linux for their solution to XP reaching EOL to keep an Op System working on their older hardware and the news about the Heartbleed Bug, which effects OpenSSL which is what Linux and other Open Sources stuff uses to make a secure connection uses. By a strange twist of "fate" MicroSoft doesn't use OpenSSL so it's secure. I'd almost think it was something planned by MicroSoft to scare folks out of moving to Linux and moving to new hardware with Windows 8.1 instead. Anyone else think there's more…

Hi folks, I'm working on this project to transition my LE1700 tablet pc from Windows XP to the fine world of Linux. This computer is my primary drawing machine and I use it to create small sketches and modify graphics. it's been pretty easy going working with it. I've put Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon on it and got everything updated, also played with the themes and added a couple applets, like adding the multiple workspaces, adding the System Profiler and Benchmark. So far I've not had any real issues with this machine except I don't know how to configure the keys on the tablet itself (has a total of 10 keys) and the laptop's wacom pen is not functioning properly a…

Razer has delayed the release of their Nabu smartband while they certify that the device is hypoallergenic. This is an effort to avoid the skin irritation problems that caused Fitbit to recall their Force band. The device was originally supposed to be released at the end of March, but some customers have reported that Razer sent them a notice informing them of the delay. The Nabu will now be available in late May or early June, according to Cedric Houston: Got an email from razergaming letting me know that the Nabu is being pushed back to late May/ Early June. Which isn’t a problem because they are taking the time to prevent what happend to the Fitbit flex. Did…

Don Melton, former director of internet technologies at Apple and the man charged with pushing WebKit and Safari out into the world, has posted the full version of his Memories of Steve article to his website, donmelton.com. Let me be up front saying that I did not know Steve well, but I had the opportunity to be around him on occasion. Mostly during design reviews of applications for which I was responsible. There were certainly other meetings, but I never visited his home and very rarely spent time with him unless others were part of the conversation. And I was certainly not some kind of confidant. In fact, he probably always thought of me as the “Safari Guy.” …

Monument Valley uses breathtaking Escher-esque worlds and haunting music to make one of the most unique, most captivating iPhone and iPad games we've seen in a long time. So how did it come about? Lead designer Ken Wong of ustwo spoke with Cult of Mac: “A lot of games make too much sense,” Wong says. “Their makers try and emulate movies, for example — wanting to look like Star Wars or The Godfather. Games can be so much more. The titles that excite us the most here at ustwo are the ones where you get to do really strange things. It doesn’t have to make sense. That’s where Monument Valley came from conceptually.” Wong shared many of his sketches and his thought …

This is a week where more people than usual are taking a look at their password security in the wake of the Heartbleed vulnerability being uncovered. To make sure people have the right tools to take passwords seriously, leading service 1Password has cut its prices in half temporarily. That means the 1Password app on iOS is now just $8.99, and on the Mac it's going to set you back $24.99 for single license or $34.99 for a five-user "family license." These are seriously useful apps if you want to get into the habit of using long and random passwords across apps and services, and now may be the best time to get on the right track. Having trouble getting your Mac to reconnect to Wi-Fi after waking from sleep? The problem may be related to Bluetooth, and here's how to fix it As near as I can tell, somewhere along the way after I upgraded to Mavericks, my Retina MacBook Pro stopped working right. It wouldn't reconnect to a Wi-Fi network after waking from sleep. I had to manually reconnect it; often I'd have to toggle Wi-Fi off and on again to make it work. Turns out a wonky Bluetooth preference file was the culprit. I'm still not clear on why. Here's how to fix it. How to trash a bad OS X Bluetooth preferences file Go to your Mac's Finder. Click on the File menu and select New Finder Window…

I was happily using my Thinkpad T60 last night when the final update notification popped up. There were updates available (the usual sort) so I let them install and went about my business. After the installation of the updates a restart was required, so I let the laptop restart. To my surprise and shock, the keyboard and pointer are now inoperable. According to the Device Manager, the devices are error code 37 - "Windows cannot initialize the device drivers". The drivers have no "rollback" and have always worked just fine until this update, and now Microsoft does not support the OS. Did Microsoft intend to render hardware useless in hope to force hardware upgra…

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP-3 on a five-year-old Dell XPX Quad. When I try to run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, I get an error message saying that it's not a valid Win 32 application, and it just won't run. I've downloaded it several times with the same result. I haven't been able to find any articles or posts by other people with this problem, so I'm at a loss as to how I can find out whether my computer can run Windows 8. Any suggestions or thoughts? My computer has a 2.6 GHz coprocessor and 3 GB of RAM, among other things, so it appears I should be able to make the switch. But, how do I go about determining that if I can't run the Upgrade Assistant? I'v…

Hi there, I have installed Windows 8 on a PC running windows xp. I was trying to get a dual boot and used advanced options in the setup, but ended up with xp on a drive and win 8 in another. Now, the PC starts on Win 8 without the option to start win xp. I can see win xp on the other drive, so, how to get the PC to allow dual boot without losing all my old files in xp or at least reverse back to xp for now? Checking on MSCONFIG, Win 8 changed drive D to C, and Windows XP appears as follows: Windows 8 (D:\Windows), where Windows in D is XP with all files and users intact. Regards, MD Continue reading...
