I recently took my pc (Windows 8) to a trusted shop to have a virus removed and they had to restore everything. Seems everything is back to normal with the exception of my sound. I am not a prolific pc person .... use it primarily for music from the 50's (Doo Wop) era. The sound was much louder before than it is now. I used to set the speaker icon in the lower right to "60" and that was great .... increasing it as I needed. Now I have it set at "100" percent and when I play my mp3's with the Windows Media Player it isn't even close to what is used to be. I have windows 7 64-bit installed for like 2 months now. I really dont like windows updates cuz they are annoying so I blocked automatic update at instalation. Yesterday I checked for updates for first time. So it has downloaded and installed 116 IMPORTANT updates. Since then, I cant run almost any program. It even says that CCC has stopped working. Somehow chrome works fine. If i open My Computer properties it says "Explorer has stopped working". Its really bad and I really dont want to install Windows again (takes too long). on Windows 7 Home Premium I installed Word 2013 When I double click an existing .doc file, the "open with" dialog box always pops up offering recommended programs "Firefox" and "Word(desktop)" I pick Word and "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked As soon as I click "OK" the Word logo displays as if starting up, but then it displays the small dialog box "Now printing page such and such of document name" and Word just terminates I have already declared Word as the Default Program for this file type. I've searched forums and many similar problems like mine have surfaced, but none help. Whenever I right-click any file, regardless of the file extension, and click on choose default program this error pops up. I've done a full system scan using my Avira Internet Security Suite and nothing has been detected. I'm currently running a Win 7 x64 Home Premium, custom built PC. I've been fighting a very slow Visual Studio problem for the past 4 hours and finally I figured out the problem. I've been using VS 2013 express everyday for the past year. NOTHING changed on my machine from last night to this morning except I downloaded the latest essentials viral patch. Visual studios is running way to slow, taking up to 20 seconds to start a program in the debugger, and another 10-15 seconds after stopping the program before the mouse will start working again. Adware infected my IE 11. I am not able to get rid of it. I need to just reinstall the IE. It seems as though it is impossible to do so with IE 11. I may turn it off, but I am not able to repair it via clean install. I may have the V9 malware. I am not sure. It seems kind strange that IE 11 is a permanent fixture. I've seen this issue reported but have not seen a solution. I did a fresh install of 14.04 this morning and everything is working great. The only problem I'm having is when I close the lid on my laptop and open it back up later I just get a black screen. I hear the hardware working but the screen is completely black and the keyboard is unresponsive, other than the power button. I'm forced to do a hard shutdown by holding down the power button. Does anyone know if anything is being done about this problem or if there area any ways around it (changing settings, installing anything, etc)?
