In the past month or so I have begun having problems with the antimalware service executable hogging the cpu. I run the apache server on my W/8.1 PC for application testing. When I use my browser to access a local web page served by apache, the antimalware service executable consumes about 50% of the CPU time for 20-30 seconds and access to the web page is delayed during this interval. The url being accessed is in the trusted sites list (as it has been for some time). I have no idea what I may have done to cause this problem. Access times on the local Apache server used to be split-second, now every local web page takes 20-30 seconds. <Moved > …

I was on YouTube looking for a certain file, and came across it. I downloaded it and it was a .RAR file. I clicked on it and inside it had an application called "install.exe". I clicked it and it brought up some errors and closed everything that I had opened. It then came up with an error and closed every program I tried to open. I realized I downloaded something malicious and rebooted my Windows 8.1. It booted like normal and once it loaded my user, instead of showing the Metro interface it instead came up with a window similar to the one that pops up when you open an administrator program and it asks for the admin password. This said the following: Window name: Use…

I ran into a FBI cyberpolice scam page last week. I have a desktop with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 11. I have since decided that IE11 is not for me so I rolled it back to IE10. Anyway. Now I click on a link or shortcut to a website and it loads, and then something loads behind it saying that I need to upgrade my browser, or upgrade my media player, or computer is running to slow and I need to fix this. Click here for installation. I right-click the back arrow button and it shows: (some numbers and // and such) SUP the webpage I had clicked the link for. Is this a hack or is it a virus? I have cleaned all of the internet caches. I've purge all history…

I have an iMac and my wife has a MacBook Pro; both are running Mavericks. Both of us have @me.com and @gmail.com email accounts. In Safari, when I am viewing a web page and click on the <Share> icon in the Safari Menubar, I see this: https://db.tt/F1d6pLMb I can send the entire contents of the web page to friends via Apple Mail; a great way to send them articles from a newspaper to which I have a paid subscription and they do not. When my wife is viewing a web page and clicks on the <Share> icon in the Safari Menubar, she see this: https://db.tt/Wb0rfI0Y She can send, via Google Mail, _only_ the URL of the web page, not its contents and anyone…

Hi, I've been thinking about something that could identify us among the professionals out there. For example, when you see a person with a lab coat and stethoscope you think of a Doctor. Or when you see someone with a toga you think of a judge/lawyer. These are respectable people among society and I think we deserve the same respect they do or maybe more because we are the future. But we don't, people still see us as punks and just people who play games and chat unknowingly that they depend and will even more on us in the future. So, maybe this is a simple question compared to this previous and somewhat philosophical statement: What can we do to be identified as an imp…

Good afternoon everyone. I found this forum through the Tapatalk app searching for a Linux forum. I am working on my BA in Computer Science and have come across Linux a few times in some of my classes. I have a new laptop I just finished upgrading that is currently running Windows 8.1 Pro. I also have an older laptop that's running 2gb of mem and has a single core AMD processor. It currently has Windows 7 and runs pretty slow. I am wanting to install Linux on the slow machine as its only OS and eventually install it on my fast laptop as a dual boot system. I am looking for suggestions on what version of Linux to use. I have only really had experience in Ubuntu. I have gla…

At least six years ago, I was able to create themes for a Sony phone interface using a Windows program, and after searching the internet and the software servers, I've seen nothing of the sort for Xfce Linux (Linux Mint, It's killing me not having a means to make my own themes out of images I've made in GIMP, but people are obviously doing this somehow or another, the question is how. Is there a program for this, or do I need to hand-code the Xfce themes? How and where can I get started? I'm running Xfce in Linux Mint. Nobody's helping me with this over on the LM site (?????), so if you can help it would be most appreciated. Continue reading...

Hello. This being my first post, you might find curious that I would give it such a title. It just so happens that I've tried/used Linux before, but it's more than 10 years ago. Now I'm looking into using it again, for very specific purposes, which is what brought me to join this forum, since I will most likely be needing (much) help, and I've quite a few questions before 'adventuring' myself into it... My Situation: I am about to start a company with a friend, and we'll acquire a server. This is where Linux comes in! I believe we are better of using/installing Linux on this server, for security reasons and cost (I understand that we can get a Linux OS for this…

Tired of your MacBook's trackpad? Maybe it's time for a mouse. Here's a roundup of my favorites I use a Retina MacBook Pro. Most of the time I'm content to use the trackpad, when I'm taking it out and about especially. But when I'm at my desk I like to tether the laptop to a big screen and put it on a stand, so I can't use the trackpad comfortably. That's when it comes in handy to have a mouse to use instead. Of course, if you have a Mac mini, iMac, or Mac Pro, and Magic Trackpads aren't your thing, you'll need a mouse all the time. Continue reading...

A U.S. appeals court has revived previously-dismissed patent cases which Apple and Motorola Mobility had brought against each other. The cases had originally been consolidated in the Northern Illinois District of the U.S. District Court before being thrown out in June 2012 due to lack of evidence on both sides. Despite reviving Motorola's case, the appeals court ruled that Motorola could not press for a sales ban on Apple's products despite any patent infringement, due to the patent being standards-essential. Apple had been pursuing a case against Motorola Mobility involving the potential infringement of four patents. Continue reading...

XP, Networking, Cable Modem. Do I have to use Dhcp because I don't have anything between me and the router? I watched hours of stuff about networks and no one ever went that far into anything. According to their scematics, the Cisco, or other, went between their machine and the cable box. I am set up with static addresses (most moviemakers didn't care for that sceme), and every thing seems to be fine, but I have several other [not sure what to dos]. For starters: Net bios over TCPIP, WINSOCK, do I need? Okay, I should have tried to track all this down, I should have written it down before I got here. Is there a way to save a draft of this and I can drive around the site f…

Hello I am having trouble logging in to my laptop from my desktop PC over our wireless network. Other PC and wireless printers are connected OK to the network. The Vaio laptop ( windows 8.1) shows up on the desktop, but login is unsuccessful- When I click on the Vaio icon a 'Connect to Vaio' login box appears. For login username I entered the laptop account name Login password I entered the laptop account sign in password ( and also tried the Homegroup password as a second attempt.). No error message appears, but the login box stays put /returns after hitting the enter key. I am guessing these are not the correct entries for the process? I'm not sure…

So this's my story before this error massage came. I'm using Windows 8.1 Single Language. I've been tried to update it maybe for million times already. It always stuck on 50%, and then it failed. I've done everything I have to do. Updating Windows (Of course that 2 additional update already included), Resetting the Windows store , and so on, But then its still stuck on 50%. The last thing I tried is refresh my windows. And I've installed all the updates too. But when I try to download it, "Your Windows 8.1 install couldn't be completed" message came. Now what should I do? Anyone can help me? Continue reading...
