Alright, Hello everyone first of all. I am a undergraduate majoring in IT science at Wayne State university in southeast michigan, however, I am starting to want to change my degree. I have been taking the introduction to linux class at my community college which transfers and I love it so much. Its a great OS that has a lot of potential. I am starting to get interested in majoring in a Linux Administrator or something similar. However, the school only provides the basic terminal and command line classes. And after doing some research online, I have found out people arent even really certified in linux. What I want to know is, will someone tell me what it takes to …

Would anyone care to walk me through setting up a full-featured command-line Linux? If a straightforward tutorial exists, it's buried under 40 metric tons of LiveCDs and mixed up jargon. These are my specs: (and here-in lies the challenge) Memory - 64 MB DRAM GPU - S3 ViRGE DX onboard Capacity - 1 x 4 GB HDD OS - Windows 98 CPU - AMD K6 MMX 300 MHz CDROM and Floppy bootable Zero internet connectivity, hence why I mentioned "full-featured" above. Manually installing packages and managing dependencies is like a waking nightmare for a noobie like me. GCC is a must. Save me Linux Guru-nobi, you're my only hope!! Continue reading...

Ok, so I went here: Index of /cdimage/weekly-builds/i386/iso-cd and all I need to do is download the single .iso with the DE that I want, right? Over at another Debian site there were 3 dvd's that were to be downloaded but that'd be for someone who was going to install Debian Testing on a computer without interweb access, correct? All I need to install Debian Testing is the single .iso with say xfce or GNOME to get what I need and I can update and upgrade from there, does that sound about right? Sorry to sound like such a "noob" but dang if Debian doesn't make it hard to get their Testing version. Seems like all they want to put out there is Stable. Continue readi…

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is a great phone that'll no doubt appeal to a great many people. But nothing appeals to everyone, and that's okay because there are a ton of amazing options to be had, including the iPhone 5s. Whether you left iPhone to go Android and are now desperate to come back, or if the Galaxy S5 was finally enough to drive you to iPhone for the first time, it's easy to make the switch. Thanks to the great App Store apps, the iPhone is almost as a good a Google phone as Android, but also comes with iOS 7 and Apple's amazing mobile apps, as well as Microsoft's apps and just about all the other very best apps you can imagine. If you're ready to return the G…

I've been using Screens VNC since it first launched and year after year, update after update Edovia keeps making it cleaner, quicker, and just plain better. Such is absolutely the case with Screens VNC 3.0 for Mac which launched today in both the Mac App Store and on Edovia's website. VNC (Virtual Network Computing), if you're not familiar with it, allows you to view and access a remote computer from your current computer. That means, with Screens VNC, you can be sitting by the pool with your MacBook Air and connect to the Windows machine at the office or the Linux server at the data center, see the screen, and use it almost as if you were standing in front of it. All you…

I have no idea what's going on at this point. For the past couple of days my PC has apparently been sending wrong passwords to my Microsoft Account about 6 times every minute it's online. I know it's my PC because the IP matches successful attempts I manually enter. It wouldn't have been much of an issue, but the multiple failed attempts lock me out of my 360 when I want to play. Signing in works on my laptop and iPhone and Xbox One, but not the 360. I looked up similar threads on this site and found mostly people running Windows 8 are experiencing and solving similar problems. This would be great, but I'm running XP and their solutions don't apply to this mac…

Running XP Pro. I've been trying to get rid of this for some time now. Don't ask why I didn't contact Microsoft (would have been too easy I guess). I found a registry fix that was supposed to work, but doesn't do the trick. It had to do with an update from Microsft, and Java Help file (all way above my payscale) that scrambled things a bit. I've been to so many sites, and read so many articles, I can't remember much of anything now. This problem first showed up in maybe '96 according to some of the things I read (people like you, that fix stuff). I really thought I had it.......Ha! Then I fell asleep. The fix was: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLH…

Hi, I have owned my HP laptop computer with Win 8 since 3/2013. Everything was running fine up until about the beginning of 3/14. One day I closed the monitor up and put it aside although some typical sites were still 'up'. Came to open it again about an hour later and found out it had completely shut down, power button unlit etc. When I turned it back on it told me it had shut down improperly. it also had Google Chrome asking me if I wanted to restart everything I had up. So I did that. Did this a couple of times afterward - I closed the lid, came back and it was fine! Then it happened again. Once I left it on for nearly 2 days in sleep mode and yet the win…

About a week ago, I was hooking up a new router. One minute, my new (only two months old) Windows 8 computer was working fine. The next minute, it got caught in a loop. I get the manufacturer's opening screen. Then it goes to a Windows blue screen with a sad face saying it is collecting data. Then it goes back to the manufacturers screen, and it just keeps flipping back and forth between these two screens. I've been on the phone with the company that built the computer, and I've looked all over the internet for answers. Most seem to think this is an issue with Windows 8, though apparently Microsoft is blaming a virus. I'm happy to run a virus scan, but I need to r…

This was not a problem when I was using XP so I'd love to know if there is anything I can do to return to my former screen resolution that was just fine as it was? Thanks Continue reading...

Sunday morning during my weekly backup we had a power failure and the my book was not on an UPS and I received a message in win 7 backup that the drive failed to write. If I plug the drive into the same usb 3.0 port that it was plugged into at the time of the power failure, I get a number of " your drive needs to be formatted before use" messages and when the loop finally stops the drive does not show up in Windows explorer or in disk management.
