Hi there, I have a XUbuntu 11.10 system booting from USB with 1 or more HDD's used for data storage. I have a test to reboot this system every 6 minutes or so using reboot command. Most of the time system detects the bootable USB stick and boots. Sometimes the bootable stick is not detected and booting fails. BIOS shows that no bootable device is detected. Even reset doesn't solve this. If I switch off and switch on the system boot device gets detected. This issue is seen in Intel, ECS, Asus mother boards. So, I feel during reboot kernel does some operation due to which device is not detected in next reboot. Can anybody point me to a way to investigate this ? Tha…

A little over a week ago, (4/25), I used Apper to load updates to a machine my folks use... mostly email and browsing. After the update and a reboot, neither Firefox nor Thunderbird would launch from the UI. So I tried launching from a cli and still no-go; then as root and no-go. The cli boot gives "GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size == 0' failed ... Bus error (core dumped)", but web searches showed that to be old (2011 or so), or unrelated to this problem. Confining the troubleshooting to Firefox, I unistalled and reinstalled with no improvement. Then cleared the user's .mozilla directory - again no improvement. I've glanced through …

Procedural crime shows like CSI (Crime Scene Investigations) can be difficult to adapt to games. But one genre that fits those shows (and mobile) very well is hidden object games. Just as the cops and detectives have to search for clues in order to solve a case, so can players search for items and perform minigames relating to the police work simulated by these shows. Thus it comes as no surprise that Ubisoft’s CSI: Hidden Crimes is a hidden object game. But Ubisoft Abu Dhabi has done something unique with this particular game – they made it completely free to play. I don’t mean a free demo with the option to unlock the content. The whole thing is free with the energ…

Korner is a new connected security system that aims to be simple to set up and be highly affordable. Owners place a single-piece tag at the corner of a door in the house, and connect an Ethernet dongle into their router. The door tag will then communicate to the router when a door is opened, closed, or knocked, and send you relevant alerts to your smartphone. Magnetic security switches aren't especially new, and are being offered in smartphone-friendly packages by the likes of SmartThings, but Korner's solution excels in its affordability and one-piece form factor. Typically entry detection requires a sensor on the door itself and the frame, which isn't always practi…
