Netflix has released their Q1 2014 earnings report today, and bundled deep in the news about numbers and dollars is a short paragraph about pricing. Later this quarter, Netflix plans to increase prices for new streaming customers by $1 to $2 more per month. Current subscribers will continue to pay what they're paying ($7.99 here in the states) for a "generous time period." Continue reading...

With a little work you can turn your Mac mini into a powerful Windows gaming system. So why not? I just heard something: A tectonic eruption of eye-rolling from PC gamers. Look, if you've got a custom rig with Nvidia Titan hardware and 4K displays to run Crysis 3 in ridiculous mode, move along. There's nothing for you here. If, on the other hand, you already have a Mac mini, or if you've been thinking about getting one but think it's underpowered for gaming, what I have to say may surprise you. One of my kids wanted to play Windows games that weren't available on the Mac. He can certainly play plenty of games that are out for the Mac, but most stuff still isn't out …

Need to transfer photos from a CompactFlash-equipped camera to a Mac with an SDXC card slot? No problem with the CFMulti With the exception of the Mac Pro, every Mac that's available these days has a built-in SDXC card slot. That makes it convenient to transfer digital photos and video from cameras that use SD card slots. If you prefer a camera that uses CompactFlash you're not out of luck, fortunately. The solution for that problem is the CFMulti from Synchrotech. The CFMulti is a CompactFlash-format flash media card reader. It works with SDHC, SD, MMC, MMC+ and even Eye-Fi cards (with some caveats). My first DSLR is an older Canon model that uses CompactFlash. …

Apple has long been rumored to be exploring building their own payments system, and according to a recent report they're looking to bring on senior executives from the payments industry to make it happen. When trying to upgrade my Win XP desktop to Win 7 via downloaded Win 7 upgrade for Win Vista laptop, I receive a dialogue box that Win 7 cannot complete download due to missing file and/or folder. It does not state which file/folder is missing -- only directs me to be sure that the file/folder is not marked as "read-only". Is this due to differences in desktop systems vs. laptop systems? What can I do to correct this, if anything? Many thanks! Linda B. Continue reading...

1.) I need it to show all files, and only files. Is there an App besides File Explorer that does this properly? There are shortcuts under "This PC" that don't belong: Desktop Documents Downloads Music Pictures Videos I wish to not view these shortcuts, unless they are files. They are not a shortcut file because I cannot delete them. Are they folders? I think not because they contain exactly the contents of a Folder location that already exists. 2.) File Explorer must not show the same item twice, unless it is a copy in a different folder. Is there a view setting in File Explorer that can view a single instance of a file? Are the shortcuts (see item 1.…

I get no error code--just a message that it failed and is reverting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Continue reading...

Hi, I just bought genuine windows and the product key they gave me doesn't work when I try to update my old one (control panel > system > change product key). I know it's a genuine product key because it's the one they gave me on the reciept! However when I enter it, it says "validating; this may take a few minutes" and then it says "this copy of windows is not genuine." I am trying to use the online customer support but it just isn't working. Continue reading...

I got a call at my house from a non American man claiming to be from Microsoft. He we very frantic as he was describing that the wifi network in my house was under siege and that I should act on it right away. I was a bit skeptical, but I let him continue with what he was saying. He had me open up my computer and look around in my computer management and it showed that my computer had 9,774 errors on it. He was talking about how whoever was behind the errors could potentially get ahold of my entire households credit card information if we were to make an online purchase, and that I should not do any online banking (not that I do). At this point he said that I could go to …

I have a new computer and am in the process of copying my files (using an external hard drive) from my old C:\ drive to my new one. Everything went very smoothly except: There is a folder in my Windows Explorer "Documents and Settings". I never use it because I have set up my own "filing system" based entirely on Windows Explorer folders and sub-folders. However, Windows continues to put "stuff" into "Documents and Settings". When I tried to copy this folder (to be on the safe side) copying was denied because of the presence of files NTUSER.DAT and ntuser.dat.LOG in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator and NTUSER.DAT and NTUSER.DAT.LOG in C:\Documents and Settings…

However; I wanted to configure my mouse in Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center (Ver 2.0.162.0), but after installation of the program, microsoft mouse and keyboard center could not detect my device. I tried everything that was suggested by the troubleshooting suggestion, ex plugging into another USB port, didnt use a USB hub, restarted my computer, but nothing seems to work. I checked on the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center compatible device list and saw that the Sculpt …
