I set up a home network and now I'm wondering if I need it. Why can't I just connect through a miniport? I'm confused with all these network settings available. I am running Win/7 using I.E. 11 and ethernet connection from my modem to router. Since I have a laptop in my home, I need to run wireless which requires the router, correct? I do not take my laptop out of my home. Can someone please help a old lady configure her network connections. I am connected to IPV4 but no connectivity in IPV6, does this mean anything? Confused and old... Thanks in advance for any help Continue reading...

Google forum advised me to post this here saying that it's probably a problem with windows and maybe a antivirus problem and that I might need to disable my Norton till I get it installed, but here is my problem... I am using window 7 home premium. I am trying to use an app for streaming to my tv. I can only do this with google chrome cast. I installed the new version of chrome and it won't load and I get a pop up saying "unspecified error" . Tryed to uninstall and I get a pop up that says to close all google windows and try again. I normally use windows on my laptop and would like to use chrome also. Anyone have a fix for this or a suggestion? Even if I do get it unin…

I like to group my desktop icons. All icons which appear as "shorcuts" within their properties stay in place when opened. However, I have one icon which does not have the same properties as the others - "shortcut" does not appear within its properties. This icon will move to the first open position on the far left. I have tried to recreate the shortcut, but it always appears as the same non-shortcut. Any ideas on how to resolve its movement? Continue reading...

Just to clarify - I also have a machine sorely in need of a refresh and was planning on doing a clean Windows install (ie not a "restore to factory settings" install so as to avoid bloatware). I have Win7 Home Premium 64X currently installed, so I just downloaded an ISO from this link: http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso Once burned to DVD, I will be able to use this ISO to install a fresh version of Win7 using the original product key from the the sticker on the case, correct? I'm ok with the actual install and all that, but I'm leery of getting a message in 30 days saying that I have to pay for a new Windows license. Thanks! Split from: h…

A while ago, all my programs were opening with Microsoft word instead of their proper program. Example, if I were to double click on Mozilla Firefox, it would open word and not Firefox. I went to Open with... and set Mozilla as my default program so now everything I click (paint, microsoft word, photoscape, anything really) will only open in Mozilla Firefox. How do I fix it? I just want all my programs to open with their proper program. I want Microsoft Word to open when I click on the file Microsoft word, I want Paint to open when I click on the Paint file, etc. Here's what I see: How do I fix it? Continue reading...

While online a window popped up with an official microsoft look to it, in the form of an urgent notification that my drivers were outdated for my operating system. I had just recently upgraded to windows 8.1, and wondered how the driver update during the upgrade could be outdated so soon. Nonetheless, a scan of my drivers was recommended so I went along, (this was microsoft right?) and all of a sudden a "utility Scanner" was being downloaded, which then boldly stated that "14 out of 32 drivers for windows 8.0" were outdated and needed updating. The reference to 8.0 should have done it for me, but in this day of relentless updates from your manufacturer, op systems, de…

If you're looking to fill out your comiXology comic collection you're in luck. Although we are admittedly a bit late to catch this, the folks from Image Comics and comiXology are giving away 193 free comics and today is the last day to grab them. Among those available you'll find The Walking Dead, Witchblade, Epic Kill, Fatale and many, many more. All you need to do is open up the comiXology app and go to the Image Comics publisher page and make your selections. Alternatively, you can also visit the comiXology site where they offer up an awesome 'add all to cart button' that allows for them to be instantly available on your device after checkout. Thanks, Paunngaq! …

A bug has been discovered in iOS 7 that causes email attachments to not be encrypted. Before anyone panics, however, in order for an attacker to exploit the bug they'd need to a) steal your device and, b) brute force or jailbreak-bypass the passcode or password, which c) currently means there's no risk to iPhone 4s and later devices running iOS 7.1 or later software. When reached for comment about the bug, Apple provided us with the following statement: "We're aware of the issue," an Apple spokeswoman told iMore, "and are working on a fix which we will deliver in a future software update." The bug was first reported by Andreas Kurtz: I verified this issue by…

All recent iPhones and cellular-capable iPads come with SIM (subscribe identity module) card slots on their sides. A SIM card is how your carrier provides all the information your device needs to get on their network and access the voice and data services linked to your account. There may be times when you'll beed to swap the SIM card in your iPhone or iPad. If you upgrade to a new device you'll have to move the SIM card to that new device. If you're traveling and want to use a local SIM to avoid roaming charges, you'll have to swap it in. If something goes wrong with your SIM card you may even need to replace it. Whatever the reason, it's a super simple process and all y…

Not all cables are made the same. But if they have the MFI logo (Made For iPhone/iPad/iPod), like this one does, you can count on them working well. I learned that the hard way back in the 30-pin Dock Connector days when I bought a handful of cheap sync cables at a gas station. $5, compared to $19 for a genuine Apple cable! Without exception, all of them were bunk. Well, one worked for syncing. But not a single one worked for charging. So I'm a bit suspicious of third-party sync cables to begin with. But if it has a "Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad" label on it, it does give me some reassurance — I know that the manufacturer has passed muster with Apple's own certificat…
