If your Mac can't boot up, don't panic. The built-in Recovery System can get you up and running A flashing question mark or flashing globe on boot is one of the scariest sights imaginable to a Mac user. It means that the Mac is not finding the system software it needs to continue booting. You're not doing anything else on this Mac until this is fixed. Since OS X 10.7 Lion, Apple has included the ability for Macs to restart using a special system called the Recovery System. Short of a hardware failure, the Mac's Recovery System can help get you back to working order. It'll let you reinstall OS X Mavericks over the Internet, provided your Mac can maintain a network co…

Teleprompt+ 3 is the all-new and all powerful version of the best professional teleprompter app for iPhone and iPad. New features include a complete iOS 7 redesign that improves not only the look but the experience as well. There's rich text support, along with .RTF and .DOCX (in addition to .TXT) import so the writing looks the way you want it to look. If that's not enough, Quick Edit lets you make changes when and where you notice them, in the prompting mode. Since Apple doesn't (yet?) allow developers to do paid upgrades, Teleprompt+ 3 is a new app. That means if you bought the original, you have to buy the new version again. Since App Store apps are much cheaper …

Providing a great shopping experience keeps users coming back to the Store. We’re constantly working to improve the way apps are presented, to help users search for specific app titles. Today I’d like to talk about a few enhancements we’re rolling out to make the Windows Store experience even better, and what that means for developers. Last month’s Windows 8.1 Update made it easier for users to find and stay connected to their favorite apps by placing the Store icon in the taskbar and enabling apps to be pinned to the taskbar for desktop users. Today, we begin rolling out an update that will provide an enhanced user experience inside the Windows Store itself. We’ve al…

Hi, I've been having the same problem with my work computer for over 2 years and no one in technical support seems to know the cause. What happens is the following: -In windows explorer some or all of the icons will change into various things including: trees, question marks, recycling bins, notebooks, telephones, hammers, stars, etc. -I cannot open anything through windows explorer. Sometimes the pathname will change to to start with C or sometimes it'll be blank. If I try to open something it will say, "There is not enough free memory to run this program. Quit one or more programs, and then try again." People have remoted into my computer and verifyed tha…

I don't know anything about tech details, but here's the problem: As I'd been using a laptop and an old computer, I hadn't used this one and my windows OS for at least a year, possibly longer. When I went back to using this one a couple of months ago, I noticed in the bottom right-hand corner a message that says "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting- this copy of windows did not pass genuine windows validation." It was a genuine windows product (xp) when I purchased and installed it more than 5 years ago, so what's the reason for this message? In addition, during the last couple of weeks I've been pestered with popups, redirects, and not be…

I'm trying to install XP Home edition on my Acer 2301 XC Travelmate via Oracle VirtualBox, i.e. as a virtual machine under Linux Mint 13. My goal is to install a couple of Windows XP programs on the Acer that won't install with Linux's "Wine" emulator, e.g. Adobe Creative Suite 5. However, I think that the original XP discs that came with the Acer aren't really bootable - they're more for recovery. There were two disks that came with the Acer (see photo). Is there a way to extract a bootable ISO image from disc #1? Or would I have to download a proper file? Specs below: System: Host: Acer Kernel: 3.2.0-23-generic i686 (32 bit, gcc: 4.6.3) Desktop: Xfce …

* Original Title: Issue accessing the internet after installing the latest update Last week I installed the latest update to Windows 8 however once installed I was no longer able to access the internet and was getting a message saying that the page could not be displayed. Underneath this there was a button to click to fix connection problem however I did that and it came back with no connection issue. I reset my router but there was no issue as I could access the internet on my phone and from my flatmates laptop. The only way I could access the internet again was to restore my pc and remove the installs. I was then forced to install the update again this…

I am running windows 8.1 on an Acer Aspire M desktop. GFX is Nvidia Geforce GT630 i used to be able to connect my TV , KDL 40EX720 sony bravia led 3D to my computer as a second screen, this worked like a charm in Vista,win7, but not so since i upgraded to my current desktop. I discovered my TV is seen by the system as a digital mediarender, whatever that may be,but it wont allow me change this setting to simply view the TV as a monitor-class device.Neither windows nor Nvidia recognize the connected TV as a selectable monitor. Please dont suggest win+P , this was obviously already attempted. The TV *detects* the signal allright,it indicates a connected device…

I have now seen twice today with two completely different customers an issue where they have started up their pc in the morning and they are unable to open anything. When I have connected on remotely, I can click on anything but nothing happens. Normally rebooting or booting into safe mode then back into normal mode restores functionality. I have ruled out issues with AV and virus infection etc and installed updates but I'm starting to wonder if this is a windows updates issue? Continue reading...

Recently I have encountered quite an annoying issue with my internet. My internet is not working, except for one browser and Skype. I have tried on all of the devices in the house and have had no luck with any of them. But I did find that if I turn off my router then turn it back on the internet will work for maybe 20 seconds then drop out. I have a Compaq laptop and I am currently using Windows 8.0. I thing that I find weird is that Skype is working, I can make calls and IM. The only way I can access the internet right now is with Tor Browser on my laptop, If you don't know what Tor is, it is an anonymous browser that has an automatic VPN. Because of this VPN my do…

I've been experiencing this issue fairly recently and have no idea what it could possibly be. Reseating the RAM and the video card did nothing (though, I will try again tomorrow). I can't find anything about this specific error so here's the dump file for the 2 latest crashes since the most recent one is a different error and the older one was the error I had been experiencing up until now. http://www.mediafire.com/download/j5nsu2587fekvjl/042514-23181-01.dmp http://www.mediafire.com/download/nc9qpbsvnxx119c/051314-20482-01%282%29.dmp I'm running win7 64-bit, if you need anymore information, I'll be sure to post it. Hi there, my computer has an AMD graphics card, processor and motherboard. In previous answers to questions like mine, people are always told to download the drivers for the sound cards. All my drivers are up to date, and when I go into the sound settings to "show disabled/hidden/disconnected devices", no stereo mix appears. Is there a way for me to get stereo mix other than having to buy additional hardware? Continue reading...

I'm currently using Win 8 x64 and am using WinDefender. It's on for real-time protection and I occasionally do a Quick or Full scan manually. However I cannot do a custom scan on any of my drives, including C: It immediately gives me the error "Your PC couldn't be scanned" "The program could not find the malware and other potentially unwanted software on this computer." Error code 0x80509023 Any ideas? PS- it would help if we could copy and paste these error messages! I had to type out the whole error message above. I hope there's no typos. Continue reading...

I have had my Windows 8 Asus netbook for less than a month, and I already have an outpouring of pop-up ads, auto-play video ads, and countless companies interrupting my work, telling me that I have to pay them to clean my PC. In the midst of typing this very question, I have had Flash Player interrupt me to tell me I need to update it. I can't open a tab without being redirected to some download, or having my internet (both Chrome and Explorer) crash. Does this sound like a virus? Should I bother purchasing a system-cleaning program? Is this a bigger problem than it seems? I am frustrated and I don't want to give out my credit card number online unless the program can be …

Windows Defender keeps stalling when it tries to scan ( C:\Windows\twunk_32.exe ). I'm helping a friend out running different scans on his PC, but each time I try to Run a Scan with Windows Defender, it stops when it hits this file? Each time I come over to check out his PC, the Windows Defender says it's running, but it continues to STOP scanning when it reaches that file... I've run MalwareBytes Anti-spyware, along with his normal anti-virus, but neither of the programs catch it, or isolate it? So a bit perplexed.. After researching it, some sites say it's a virus, but other sites say it's not; and just leave it alone... Any insight into this issue would be…
