If the government demands your personal, private email or other data, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple, and others are reportedly taking steps to notify you faster and more frequently than they did in the past. That's putting them at odds with prosecutors who believe such notifications can interfere with ongoing investigations and evidence gathering. The Washington Post: Fueling the shift is the industry's eagerness to distance itself from the government after last year's disclosures about National Security Agency surveillance of online services. Apple, Microsoft, Facebook and Google all are updating their policies to expand routine notification of users about gov…

Almost 8 years after it was introduced, you still can't attach files to emails in iOS. While iOS 6 has introduced a method to attach photos and videos to in-progress emails, it suffers from poor discoverability, and only works with content from the Photos app. If you want to attach any other file to an email, it's a usability disaster. That's because iOS has an ImagePicker but no broader DocumentsPicker, so it can't handle a broader range of attachments. So why is that such a bad thing? The current method for adding photo or video attachments to in-progress emails is done via the same pop-up menu originally introduced in IOS 3 for cut, copy, and paste. You tap the sc…

As IE is no longer supported for XP, i'm unsure why anyone would continue to use it? My browser of choice is Firefox. However, if you use Windows, you also get IE and as far as i know, it shouldn't be removed from your system. I suspect IE will still be used under the covers for things MS updates (although we shouldn't be getting them for XP). I'm wondering if just having IE on my system poses a danger and if so, what can be done about it? Also, will the Windows firewall continue to be maintained by MS? If not, this will become an exposure and i'm wondering what others have done to alleviate this exposure? Continue reading...

My system has me locked out. There is apparently a Windows "password" which prevents me from using my computer. The hard drive and motherboard were replaced late last year due to a lightning strike. Windows 8 was re-installed (without my being asked by the ALL-KNOWING-ALL-SEEING GEEK SQUAD - I hate it). I had purchased another system as I needed to keep working. Now several months later when I go to get on my q500 Windows 8 it opens to the initial login page and asks for the last password I used on the system. THERE WAS NONE. I never used a login or password as I am an independent contractor. I have tried everything I can think of. I am about ready to blow a gas…

My windows 8.1 for desktop just updated and I lost a lot of the features I liked about windows 8. Now mind you, I am not happy with windows 8 format and only got it because my new computer was a gift. But now it is all screwed up. When I first got windows 8, I liked some of the features on the Start Menu. IT was nice that my email did a split screen when I clicked on a link in the email. But with these newest updates, I lost that feature. IN fact, I lost a lot of the nice features of the Start Menu. Now everything goes through the Desktop and I no longer see the point of using the Start Menu, It is just easier to use the Desktop screen for everything. However, the new upd…

I just bought a brand new HP computer with windows 8.1. Every time I leave my computer idle for a few minutes, the desktop screen locks up my icons. The icons disappear, but I can see open icons in the bar below. However, the computer won't let me access them. The only way I can get them back and gain access to my computer is to restart the computer. Why is it doing this and how can I fix it? Continue reading...

I can't open the files referred to here. The only recent significant change to my PC has been the setting up of WinXP in a Virtual environment, although this was not running when I had the last two BSODs. Hi everyone, When I right-click on the desktop it takes forever just to load the right-click menu. The desktop freezes but other applications works fine (i.e. WLM, Chrome),after a BOSD. I tried Googling but can't find what I wanted. On a side note, my NVIDIA Control Panel also can't execute. IT was there before Blue screen of Death appeared when i was watching a movie but now it,s not there. Does this have any connection with my problem? I tried the system restore and restarted the computer, it did not work either. It brought me back to this screen. Any suggestion? Continue reading...
