From the time I got it and first turned it on it would give me error messages of high CPU usage and I hadn't even downloaded anything. Once I downloaded Chrome and use it in IE it has been all downhill from there. It has locked up, frozen, given shock plugin not working and crashed, and now my laptop is overheating. I have reset it and refreshed it. I am ready to throw it through a window. I use AVG for antivirus and Malwarebytes for malware. I don't have games or movies or even music on it, although I would like to. It does all kinds of things by itself like it has a virus but nothing seems to help it. Service Host: Local Service can get as high as 59. Is that good? My …

Just set up new computer with Windows 8. Have spent a ridiculous amount of time just trying to change the profile name in top right corner of start screen... Have tried numerous scenarios found via this forum, google searches, etc... all to no avail. Specifically, I have logged-on to my MSFT account and change it to my desired 'display name' and it DOES show there as wanted, as it does when I log onto Windows 8 mail, Outlook etc... But not on the Windows 8 start screen. Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated at this point... Thanks, Steve Continue reading...

On startup and when I try to open any program I get an error message. It goes away when I click the"x", but if I open something else it will appear again. The message is; c:\progra~3\winspeed\winspeed.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. On top of the message box is the .exe file I am trying to open followed by "Bad Image'. Can't find much about it on line, anyone know what's going on? Is it a virus? I have done deep root kit scans etc. and everything comes up clean. …

My mp3 files are in a different hard drive on my computer and yet when I click on the file while in ‘powerdesk’ some of them open up the "my documents" folder. Changing properties doesn't work or changing 'open with' command. Checking the 'properties' shows that the file is supposed to open in my ‘Foobar’. Some of the music files play properly but I can't tell which will or won't. I use Windows 7.... Continue reading...

I recently had a problem with my hotmail account and looked up "hotmail support" online. I found the following: Toll Free Number 1800-549-9820 , 1800-867-1858 Email = *** Email address is removed for privacy *** I contacted these guys and they fixed my account problem along with getting a load of malware off of my computer and speeding things up. They do have an Indian accent and are probably from there but I have had many dealings with them since and they have really helped out. Of course, at the onset I was very leery when having to use ammyy to give them access to my computer and I came across this website. If you are having difficulties as a result of being…

This "searchprotect" director suddenly appears. However, the date is back in 2013. I have used Norton 360 forever and was surprised to find this monster. Have read several resolution answers, and none make sense to me. Is there a simple way to get read of it. Showing up in root directory, I think. Cannot find in list of program to uninstall. Hello, I am new to linux and trying to get a handle on things. The last couple of days I have been trying to learn about security and the different commands you can use to scan your system. I was hoping someone could look at the results and let me know if I have any issues. My system seems to be a bit buggy with weird stuff happening from time to time. These commands were run on a live DVD of ubuntugnome. I am the only user and was only using the terminal and webserver. Thank you for your time. unhide-posix proc ubuntu-gnome/ubuntu-gnome:~$ unhide-posix proc Unhide-legacy 20121229 Copyright © 2012 Yago Jesus & Patrick Gouin License GPLv3+ : GNU GPL version…

I've had situations where I'm required to log into a website every 2 weeks, or every month to keep a service active. One example is no-ip, the dynamic dns service. If you don't login each month, your stuff gets deleted. I'm wondering if its possible to have a cron job, that runs a bash script, that logs into a website every 10 days or so? I know mostly how to do this, except for the login part. Normally your required to click the mouse on the login fields, type credentials, press enter, etc. I tried going to various sites with the plaintext type format of user(colon)password(at)sitename, but that didn't work. How can I make a bash script login to the site? Co…

I have an old Dell Dimension 2400 with 1GB of memory running CentOS 6.5. The last few times I've updated the kernel the newer versions don't seem to load successfully. The system seems to boot and then screens goes black. Since Grub seems to be only keeping the last five (5) kernel versions I'm running out of options. Hi everyone, It's nice to meet you all. This is my first post here on the forum. I've been having a problem with my laptop restarting and I just can't find the solution anywhere. I recently booted up my Acer Aspire 6920g running Ubuntu 13.10 that's been in storage for 4 months and it's running fine while on battery power. But the minute I plug it in, it restarts every few minutes without warning. I have ruled out the possibility of a power cable issue since this will happen even if my laptop is plugged in with a full battery. In summary, On battery: Runs fine. Plugged in: Restarts every few minutes. Let me know what you guys think of this problem. Thank…

Update: Heathrow has sent iMore a clarification to what Samsung is actually doing — and not doing — at Terminal 5 I awoke this morning to the news that Heathrow Airport in the U.K was going to allow Terminal 5 — reportedly the busiest terminal in the world — to be rebranded as 'Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5' for two weeks. I immediately checked the source link to make sure it wasn't a lesser Onion-style satirical outlet, and the date to make sure it wasn't April 1st. Neither were the case. Via Android Central: Russell Taylor, Vice President, Corporate Marketing, at Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland, said: "We are always looking for ways to maximise brand impact a…

Editor's note: While the more frequent, tech-savvy of iMore's readers might already know their way around an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, for anyone new to Apple, or family and friends not-so-familiar, Apple Retail offers an amazing array of training options that really don't get the attention they deserve. My mom had the opportunity to check out One to One recently and was so thrilled with the experience she offered to write about it for us. Needless to say, I loved the idea. Here's her review! - Rene Last month I wrote a review of the iPhone 5c and what it had come to mean to mean in just half a year. One of the things I mentioned in my review was that there were several th…

Google has purchased Quest Visual, the company behind Word Lens, an app that translates text in the world using the iPhone's camera. The technology from Word Lens is expected to be incorporated into Google Translate. The Word Lens language packs will be made free during the transition to Google, according to the Quest Visual website: As a thank you to everybody who supported us on our journey, we've made both the app and the language packs free to download for a limited time while we transition to Google. Word Lens is currently available for iOS, Android, and Google Glass. Interestingly, the app was recently featured in Apple's "Powerful" ad. Do you use Word Le…

A scorned ex-iPhone user is suing Apple over lost text messages that she is not able to receive after switching from an iOS device to a smartphone on another platform. Apple's iMessage service doesn't de-activate the iMessage service when a user switches to a non-Apple phone. In this case, messages do not get delivered and the service thinks that the message should be routed as an iMessage rather than a traditional SMS or MMS, meaning that switchers away from Apple would not receive messages from their iOS counterparts. The suit, filed in a San Jose court and seeking class action status, comes after Apple began acknowledging this glitch earlier this month. For swi…

When packing up to move, I uncovered a relic from an old job. An old Dell laptop that turns on just fine and worked perfectly well when I did use it. The problem is,I cannot login. It's set up for the business's network and it's the only option so even if I did remember my login, I'm not sure it would work. Plus, I wasn't listed as THE admin, all I was allowed to do was chose what to download. I don't really NEED anything off of it but I would like to be able to get it working so I can give it to my son for his birthday next week. What do I do next? I have an old Windows XP cd with the serial number on it. Not sure it's ever been used, I've had it for many ma…
