Ever since i bought a new computer with windows 8 I have had serious issues with windows updates. Every time my computer updated, it wouldn't boot afterward. I never did figure out which update was the culprit so i finally disabled updates all together. This was all fine until i wanted to download an app from the microsoft store. The store refused to let me download anything until i installed my updates. I said no and gave up on the app. Unfortunately, somehow while trying to download the app i had allowed microsoft to re-enable updates, so when i shut down my computer it installed the updates i have been avoiding. When i tried booting my computer, sure enough it didn't b…

Hi, I've being having ongoing problems with Windows Update failures for several months and nothing I seem to do and nothing that I have read online seems to help. I have an Acer Laptop E1-531 running a 64 bit version of Windows 8. Almost every time the laptop boots, it attempts to install the updates fails (3 times), reverts, and finally boots properly. This takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Can someone please help? I'm desperate. Thanks Continue reading...

My Dell Windows7 often 'runs away' with the cpu at 45/50 percent usage even when i'm not running any programs. I see that process mcshield is very active and no other process is running. In PROPERTIES I could reduce its priority, but I get dire warnings not to do so. When I checked the reduced priorities box, got the warning, and then hit CANCEL, the programs stopped running. During all this time the I/O light for the hard drive was solid green. My question is, what is the purpose of MCSHIELD, and can I cancel it or disable it? Thanks, Vince Continue reading...

I installed a Plantronics Voyager Legend UC bluetooth headset to my work provided Lenovo ThinkPad laptop running Windows 7. The headset shows up as a device in Control Panel --> Devices and Printers. However, it does not show as as a device in the Control Panel --> Sound Playback or Recording tabs. I need the headset to be the playback device for my VoIP work phone. I tried to delete the headset and reinstall it but I cannot delete it in Control Panel --> Devices and Printers. When I locate it and right-click, delete or uninstall is not an option. I went to Control Panel --> Device Manager --> Sound video and game controllers, found it there and unin…

I am a new user to 8.1. I've found that when running a full scan with Windows Defender, the computer shuts down prior to completion. When I power the machine back on, the scan starts from where it left off. Is the machine actually going into a sleep mode? Does the sleep mode in 8.1 require you to hit the power button to "wake up"? This seems like an issue if you need to adjust the power settings every time you need to run a scan. Continue reading...

Hi, Yesterday, when I opened my laptop, I found my files have an extension of .POSHKODER. I googled about it and learned it's a new virus that encrypts all the files. Please let me know if there is any solution to it. It's asking 450$ (1Bit) to decrypt the files, but I am not sure if they would really do it. I am using Windows-7 OS, and I hope if not anyone else at least Microsoft would provide a solution to it. Thanks, Arjun Continue reading...

with this new iOS 7x libimobledevice no longer mounts my iPhone 4, how do I JUST install the sid package and dependices needed for it with out having the repo change my whole OS? I have tried installing libimobledevice2 from sid repo and it updated my whole Linux Box (CrunchBang/Wheezy) and only did half a job with seeing my iPhone leaving me with no complete mount and removing programs I need and I used like what ever crunchbang uses for the menu that works off the mouse , that just got gone, leaving me with only keyboard short cuts. so I'm thinking there has to be a way to just install just the packages needed for the unstable libimobledevice (2) 1.x.6 (if that …

We have a 42 mbit 4G connection (17 mbit in real), but if we exceed 40 GB per month we are kicked down to 384kbps for the rest of the month. Last month we exceeded the rate after five days. To work around this I want to put a limit on the bandwidth, limit this huge 17 mbit wire down to something smaller. I've found various examples, but the closest I've found is wondershaper, which applies many things I'm not interested in. I don't want smart shaping. I just want to be able to limit download and upload speeds to fixed values, for example 2mbit down and 25kbps up. Below is what I've come up with so far, based on wondershaper. It seems to work for downlink but …

Hello everyone. I'm planning to create a data-encryption enabled home server. It would backup via rsync (or similar cronned script with rsync command or cp -uvRf) home directories of my work laptop (encryption is a must) and my home computer, which I use for study (encryption is not that needed). To achieve this, I have two pieces of hardware that could be used: 1) A headless lappy (Lenovo G450 with broken monitor). 2) A Raspberry Pi Revision B (Embedded system with 512 MB RAM, 700 Mhz ARM dual core to the one I could attach a USB HDD. If this works properly, I'd like to also enable an apache / public network multimedia server (which was the main purpose of th…

Hello everyone. I'm planning to buy a piece of hardware that will enable me to do the following: 1) Configure data encryption inside it (something like encrypted LVM via NAS if possible; I do not have a lot of knowledge about NAS Storages yet). 2) Run a script that rsyncs 2 different machines. Script file will be held inside both machines and process will be cronned Daily on my work computer (that's why the encryption and paranoia about secure data storage). The other computer is used for studying and there is no need for data to be encrypted. It might be based (or be an almost exact copy) of vencatt's script. 3) I have a headless lappy (Lenovo G450 with broken m…

A ton of great apps and games come our way each and every month and now it seems Apple is helping remind us of some of the very best. Coming with yesterday's App Store refresh – and first noticed by Macstories – Apple has added a "Best of April" segment. And there's some real gems in there. Such apps as Morning and Yahoo! Finance, games like Hitman Go and Clash of Clans are featured. Importantly it doesn't look like Apple has limited its selection to just new apps and games, but those which received decent updates throughout the month as well. Who knows what May will bring... Do you want health sensors in your Apple EarPods headphones? How would you feel about Apple putting health sensors into their next-generation EarPods headphones? There are a ton of health-related rumors swirling around iOS 8 and Healthbook, the iPhone 6 and even the still-mythical iWatch, and forward deploying sensors into wearable electronics, including headphones, is clearly the future. But is it the imminent future? Would you want it to be? The discussion around this possibility stems from a post on Secret concerning the idea that Apple's EarPods could start reading heart rate and blood pressure. That EarPods could get smart and conceivably tie into the iPhone …
