A scan showed I had "TrojanDownloader:Win32/Filcout.A", and gave me the message that it had been "partially removed". A repeat scan gave me the same message. Is it gone, or is it still there? Do I have to do anything else to clean it? How can I find out? Any advice please? Continue reading...

A bunch of programs (?) keep popping up about "needed updates," "viruses detected, "download" this, "download" that. I "X" them out, but they keep coming back on screen. A few of the names of them are: "My PC Health Kit". "System Optimizer Pro", "iYogi", "CompuClever", "PC Clean Maestro" and others. They all want me to "download" them to fix the 6,000+ (later 500+) problems I SUDDENLY HAVE, which I didn't have a WEEK ago. (That is how long I've been trying to eliminate them. I usually spend over an hour TRYING, then giving up. I do NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO? I raN Microsoft Essentials and it reported "NO PROBLEMS". I am ignorant when it comes to using a compute…

I have been infected with the win32-zbot. It is identified on my computer as C:\Users\mary\AppData\Roaming\Izsiom\bului.exe. I can follow the path to the folder IZSIOM and bului files, but ot delete. I logged on as administrator and took ownership of the object, but still can't remove it. When I look at the Properties of the file the security settings allow total access, but when I highlight it, the "remove" button goes gray so I can't click it. I've granted myself, as administrator, permission to access the file but cannot delete it. When I try, I get a "need permission" message. I don't know how to gain the permission necessary, although I've read all the info on…

Please don't send the "uninstall through control panel" advice again as that is not the problem. The Pop up remains after uninstall and comes up at PC boot to hound you to buy their freaking programs. The POP UP is the problem. HOW DO I GET RID OF THE POP UP? Thanks, gmegod51 Continue reading...

By now you will all have heard about the breakin at ebay. Although no bank account details were stolen, there was enough information about thousands of people to allow their identities to be spoofed, and if someone can persuade your bank that she is you, she'll soon have your account details too. The whole list is doubtless already up on a sales site on the dark net for every criminal in the world to access. When online commerce is discussed, the emphasis is usually on how safe transactions are because everything is encrypted. Nothing is said about what happens afterwards to the information you have passed across. Of course it ends up on some company server, possibly e…

I found this article in the Bulletin, and frankly it made me feel slightly ill. According to this author, secure boot is the best thing that ever happened to computer users, and fine for Linux users too -- you just have to get some keys from the appropriate certification authority. And guess what? There's only one such authority and it belongs to Microsoft. But the article is interesting as it shows what the "big boys" (Ubuntu, Fedora and Suse) are up to. Continue reading...

The Double Layer Hybrid Case with Kickstand by Amzer for iPhone 5c offers not only an easy way to watch movies and shows, but also provides some serious protection against drops. It's easy to install, comes at an extremely reasonable price, and fits well. But are there any drawbacks to buying this case over something else? This offering by Amzer currently only comes in black and is composed of two layers. The first is a soft inside layer that is made of silicon. This layer serves as a way to absorb shock in the unfortunate even that you drop your iPhone 5c. The outer layer is made of a hard plastic and makes it easier to pull your iPhone in and out of your pocket. Th…

Your task this week is to use reflections to your advantage. The win this week will go to the person who can capture an image that just wouldn't be the same unless that reflection was exactly as it was. Have been trying to install critical updates since before the official end of life on XP, so I can get older PC running properly. Will then transfer necessary files and retire it. Could not update/install .NET Framework 2.0 updates, so uninstalled (per support article), and ran MS Update again. Now, it wants to install 3.5, but that will not work either. I also get error msgs when trying to uninstall other programs, that Windows Installer is not working. Downloaded 4.5 ver, but no difference. Don't know if the updates will have an effect on Dell 4550 running super slow, but originally thought it was a good first step. I'd like to clean it up a bit, and …

This post was written by Gretchen Loihle and Andrew Richards in the Windows Reliability/Windows Error Reporting team. Welcome to our second post to inform Windows Store app developers about the most common failures being seen in the Windows Error Reporting (WER) telemetry across multiple Windows Store apps, and provide recommendations for how to avoid them. We invite you to read the introductory article for a more thorough discussion about WER and the availability of failure telemetry through the Store dashboard. In this segment we touch on new failures in a familiar area and introduce some new issues. In particular, we discuss JSON object deserialization, managing …

Original title: Surface RT Apps Not Installing Backstory: So, I made the silly error of over-filling my Surface with videos because I was travelling. This left the internal storage almost full, and as temp files filled up the drive actually got completely full and showed 0B free in Computer. I believe this is when the problem started happening. I have since freed up several GB of space, and the problem hasn't fixed itself. Problem: 24 Metro apps uninstalled from my computer, without reason, warning, or explanation. Some of these are apps that are built in and come with the tablet, and others are ones I've downloaded. If I go into the Store and go to Account…

I've been trying to burn music to a CD as data files using Windows Media Player on Windows 8. Everything seems to go OK except that the tracks on the CD are in a different order from the play/burn list - not a big issue but annoying all the same. using the drop down "Burn Option" menu and the "more Burn Options" choice I've unchecked the boxed stating "Use media info to arrange files in folders on the disc" - but the tracks/files are still being rearranged. seems to being ordering them by the track number they have on the original CD (e.g all the Track 1s first , then all the track 2s and then the track 3s etc) How can I get the tracks to burn in the or…
