Hidden duplicate network drives without assigned letter
by Guest Kevin Findley- 0 replies
I have a computer at work that is connected to duplicate mapped drives. We discovered a network path error when trying to make relative links in Acrobat. The computer folder showed all the correct network paths. When I used the 'net use' command in cmd it showed duplicate mapped drives without out assigned letters that didn't appear in the GUI. Below is an example (Leaving out most of the drive names for security purposes). The two drives at the bottom are duplicates of the P: drive. I deleted these duplicates in in the cmd window, but it has happened again and we can't figure it out. Can anyone tell me why? Status Local Remote Network -…

To start with a brief history. Bought Toshiba C660 Satellite laptop running Windows 7 home Premium 64bit. Ran for about 18 months with no problems. Then got a message telling me my hard drive was about to fail. Took it to a pc repair shop who told me that the hard drive was on the way out and that's why I got the message (duh!!) Quoted me for a replacement hard drive and transferring all data across from old hard drive. About (£90 in total). Picked up computer next day and all seemed ok - liked the new computer feel!! After 2-3 days, I noticed above message and it hadn't updated windows, so went to start button and tried to run update, but told service …

by Guest MagerThom- 0 replies

WMP 9 will load and play DVD video discs #1 and #3 of a store bought set of four but, will not load and play discs #2 or #4. This is the second second sealed set that has failed to load in an identical manner. If WMP 9 loads and plays two of the set's four discs I am assuming that I have the correct codecs installed but am at a loss as to how I may correct this problem. Does anyone have a suggestion or solution that might correct this glitch? Thank you you for any advice that might be of help. Continue reading...

I found this when I started disk defrag. I've seen this type of file, drive, app before a major crash on XP OS. I don't know if this is a contributor or root cause. but I am very concerned that file search, web search, and bing search were unable to pin a source. in defrag it is listed > Drive: \\?\volume{35047d67-a1a2-4378-ba3e-09b3e02cf010}\ Media Type: HardDiskDrive Last Run: Never Run Current Status: OK(0% fragmented). I've highlighted it and selected analyze/optimize and there is no response to any button commands. Should I freak out or find a way to ID it and remove it or just ignore it? Continue reading...

[SOLVED] linker reports missing symbol, can't find lib for symbol
by Guest jkwilborn- 0 replies

Hi all, just getting down to writing some code. I have a program that will eventually give me the hash of a string within the program. Unfortunately I've had a problem of locating the proper library with the function. I've included the following: Code: #include <stdio.h> #include <openssl/md5.h> I assume it's missing the library with the compiled functions, but can't seem to locate it. I just have been using "make md5". I get the following errors: Code: dev# make md5 cc md5.c -o md5 /tmp/ccnEzHiO.o: In function `main': md5.c:(.text+0x5a): undefined reference to `MD5_Init' md5.c:(.text+0x7b): undefined reference to `MD5_Update' md5.c:(.…

NVIDIA GT 750M black screen
by Guest Azelk- 0 replies

I've been attempting to resolve this issue for days, with no success. I'm fairly new to linux. I don't know anything about reinstalling the kernel (Although it sounds easy from what I've read). The window manager I'm currently using is KDE. I installed the nvidia drivers with pacman -S nvidia, then tried using startx. The screen goes black and my GPU fan comes on at full speed, then the laptop reboots after a few seconds. I also tried installing the proprietary drivers from NVIDIA's website with the same results. I've tried using nvidia-xconfig and bumblebee. The Xorg.0 log file has the entry Code: Screens found, but none have a valid configuration or something simil…

Command line monitoring, mtr like but ongoing
by Guest toolpusher- 0 replies
Thanks for looking. I am looking for a new command line tool to add into my Linux arsenal of trubleshooting. I often monitor LAN/WAN traffic and sometimes, the big solutions come into play, like nagios and other client/server setups. Sometimes however, I can't go installing lots of packages on some systems so need to rely on those nifty cool command line tools I can quickly yum or apt-get install to achieve similar results. The majority is the systems are debian BTW. My favorite tool is mtr to get some idea of the path to a server then maybe some other tool to see how bandwidth is doing. I often have to find problems over dedicated circuits for example. Using mtr…

Weekly photo contest: Filters!
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
Filters are not only fun to use, they add something unique that distinguishes your photo of something from everyone else's. They also make it easier to be creative and really think outside the box when editing a photo. Sometimes applying filters on top of filters can turn something dull into something amazing. While filters aren't appropriate for every photo we take, they have their place. That's your task this week. Snap a photo and experiment with filters. Be sure to submit the ones you just don't think would be the same without filter effects! The contest begins today and ends Tuesday, May 13th at 6 p.m. Eastern time. Good luck! It's also time to announce the win…

United Airlines updated their app to give you in-flight video
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
After a bit of teasing earlier this year, United Airlines has gone live with their iOS app update which enables in-flight movie and TV watching on your iPhone or iPad. The service is only available on certain flights, so be sure to check yours a day before you head out before counting on being able to enjoy it. This is great. Generally the displays in just about every plane are fuzzy and ancient in comparison to what you can get on an iPhone or iPad. It's great to see new mobile-friendly services beyond in-flight Wi-Fi and QR ticketing, too. Recently we've seen some movement on airport use of iBeacons, but what else would you like to see airlines taking advantage of …

iPad continues to dominate J.D. Power tablet satisfaction ratings
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies

Ever since J.D. Power started measuring consumer satisfaction with their tablets, the Apple iPad has ruled the rankings, and this year is no different. The latest satisfaction poll from J.D. Power shows Apple leading the pack, though trailed closely by Samsung, Asus, and Amazon. Said Kirk Parsons, senior director of telecommunications services at J.D. Power: "Price has significantly impacted the marketplace. The average purchase price continues to drop and consumer expectations of tablet performance and features are different than they were for past products. Subsequently, overall satisfaction has declined, especially with ease of operation, as navigation features a…

Apple takes #2 online retailer position from Walmart
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
Apple's success in online retail is climbing steadily according to the latest numbers. Of course Amazon still has a massive lead, but online only constitutes about 10% of Apple's business. Overall, Apple's e-commerce revenue was bumped up to $18.3 billion in the last year, which is up 24% from the year prior. This was enough to overtake Staples and Walmart, who earned $10.3 and $10.04 billion respectively within the same period. It's also interesting to note that Costco climbed over Best Buy in online sales too. The bump comes courtesy of an accounting change on the part of Apple, who for the first time broke out online hardware sales from their total retail sales. C…

I noticed a new option for "administrator" when logging in under safe mode. I don't have that option when I login normally (this is my first experience using safe mode) Is this normal? My usual login has administrator privileges. There was a weird thumbnail pic of a kid doing karate next to it that I've never seen before. Is this normal? I am on 32-bit XP (yes, I know it's not supported any more) Continue reading...
