Hello - I'm new to Linux forums, and as per the introduction, I am visiting here to see what's going on. I'm new with Linux (Linux Mint 16 Petra), but I'm learning via trial and error. I'll check in once in a while, because I'm sure I'll have questions. User 141772 (you can call me "Bob") Continue reading...

I have posted to this site recently for problems I was having with my Canon printer, and then my mouse (All three of them!) first, the Canon printer; I beat myself for about a month trying to solve the printer problem (it wouldn't print) My brother put out a feeler on his tractor forum to see if there were any Linux users there that could help. One poster pointed out that Canon and Linux do not have a working relationship. Then he pointed out three printers that work well with Linux, one being HP. I found an HP printer at a garage sale, hooked it up, and lo and behold, no more printer problem. Then, however, the mouses decided to quit. More research and no solutions, …

Someone was trying out pmwScribe for me and got this icon on every one of the buttons instead of what should have been there. That suggests to me that it must be some kind of "broken image" symbol. But it isn't anything like the one that gtk gives me when it can't load an icon. broken.jpg. Has anyone seen it before? Attached Images broken.jpg (1.0 KB) Continue reading...

After a long dry spell, T-Mobile USA is once again providing signal boosters to customers who meet criteria for the devices. A signal booster can amplify a weak cell signal to make it easier to use your cell phone in your home. What's more, the signal booster is offered to qualifying customers for free. T-Mobile's made great strides over the past year to build out their wireless network. There are still some weak spots, however. Until T-Mobile gets its towers operating at 700 MHz (expected later this year) — and until customers upgrade to phones that support LTE Band 12 — building penetration is going to be limited, as well. So if phone service is weak in your house,…

Microsoft has provided a look behind the scenes on how they developed Office for iPad and highlighted an impressive 27 million download milestone. They made plenty of smart moves, such as designing for the iPad, rather than simply porting a desktop version to a tablet. The devs considered core usage scenarios, like making last-minute changes on a presentation, or powering through a draft to meet a deadline. Subtle touches like a lightweight but customizable menu ribbon, and tweaking the standard iOS 7 design principles with their own spin helped make Office the app it is. We're fans of Office on iPad, even with the subscription cost. There are plenty of productivity …

I maintain point of sale systems for a local restaurant chain. They run various versions of Windows and we are gradually updating any running XP to 7 but it's a time consuming process and we are trying to do them in a sensible order. The systems we considered last on the list run a live menu. All they do is display web content from a server on the same LAN with a proprietary browser that is supposed to stay on top of any other windows or dialogs. They have no direct user interaction whatsoever nor do they connect directly to the internet. But lately, and by lately I mean since the XP EOL, the taskbar has been popping up above the bottom edge of the menu. It creates …

I have an old hard drive with a C & D partition. The PC it belonged to no longer works (bad motherboard). I hooked it up to my current PC via USB. However it only sees the 'C' drive as an E drive (current D is a cd-rom) and I cannot find the old 'D' drive which should come up as F drive. How can I access the F drive so that I can retrieve the data on it? Continue reading...

I'm suddenly having issues with videos playing too fast. I have done all my recent updates, checked for viruses, checked for new drivers, etc. In both IE 11 and Firefox 29 the videos over the Internet are playing too fast--rapid speed. A DVD also will not play correctly. I've done a complete uninstall of Flash and clean reinstall, without fixing the problems. Also, before this problem began, I have lost the ability to double click with my mouse. I've checked the mouse on other computers and on other usb ports on my computer, but it still does not work. I'm a bit stumped after trying several fixes, troubleshooting procedures, etc. A few other folks have posted a…

My iPhone 5 (iOS 7.1.1) won't connect to my laptop, but it has no problem what-so-ever connecting to any other pc or mac. My laptop(HP notebook) makes that little "hey a usb-thing"-sound, but it doesn't do any of the other things it's supposed to do and my phone doesn't charge. It's NOT the cable, I know that for sure since it charges perfectly in other laptops/pcs/macs + wall. I have tried several usb-ports. I thought it was my iTunes so i uninstalled all apple-programs on my computer and reinstalled, but nothing changed. IT HAS OBVIOUSLY PREVIOUSLY WORKED. I have also restarted my computer a couple of times but it still doesn't work. What do I do? Continue rea…
