For a moment, I thought I could disable WD's daily definition downloads using the following tutorial, but the Properties box for MPCmdRun.exe (second pix up from the bottom) doesn't include the same options as described in the tutorial: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/update-windows-defender-automatic-windows-updates-disabled I've already disabled WD as can be seen from the screenshot, so I don't see any need to clog up my system with its daily definition updates. But I can't find any means of preventing these from downloading. I've already checked the Properties boxes for all the other executables in the WD folder, but they all contain the same basic info i.e. "Gener…

I have a HP Envy Laptop with Windows 8.1 which will not connect to the internet even though it states that it is connected. I believe I had multiple viruses (namely Search conduit, Search project, BrowserGuard with rocket tab, etc) which have been removed (I think). When trying to get online, I get a message that states "unable to connect to proxy server". There is no proxy server. Further, the Connections under Internet Properties/LAN Settings constantly resets when I unclick the "Use a proxy server for your LAN". I have tried to 'bypass' the proxy server; however, it resets back to the use proxy server setting. Have also tried to redirect any proxy server setting b…

Greetings, My server has been crashing on a nightly basis the last few nights. It doesn't come back up automatically either, my host has to manually restart it. I did an update to CentOS last week, but no new software was installed (I just did a yum update). I had no issues before I did the update. In the logs the following appears during the crash, WARNING: at net/sched/sch_generic.c:261 dev_watchdog+0x26b/0x280() (Tainted: P --------------- ) I did some Googleing and it appears to be a network driver related issue, but I had trouble finding a fix. The server is a Supermicro SuperServer 5017C-MTF Has anyone here seen anything like this? I really appreciate your hel…

I installed vncserver on my redhat, i installed same setup as i used on my last server where it worked. But now after start vncserver and trying to connect it says "Connection refused" I tried to check if port is open from external computer and it says its Closed. I tried service iptables stop and it still refused. Then i did iptables status and it shown some iptables things, so not sure if it was really stopped. so i added this rule to iptables: iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 1 -j ACCEPT my port is 1 of vnc. but still refused. So i want to ask how to open that port? Or what to check? the log file shows this: Quote: Failed to read: session.screen0.iconb…

I moved over to PCLOS-KDE-64 from Mepis-11 a couple of weeks ago. I have two Windows radio programs (MMTTY and Digipan) that worked fine on Mepis under wine. However, on PCLOS, when I key to transmit with either program (keyline via DTR on ttyS1), the program immediately shuts down - crashes). On either program, the transmitter is momentarily keyed when the program starts - that tells me that the keyline interface is good at the time the program is loaded. In both programs it appears that that the crash occurs at the same time the transmitted audio starts. I get the same effect when I run the audio test in the wine configurator. In Mepis, I was using wine v1.7.17 an…

Battery life is one of the most important elements of a modern mobile device. That's why iMore's battery life tips are some of our most popular articles, and why our comments, social feeds, and forums are filled with battery life questions, boasts, and complaints. Apple prioritizes battery life above almost everything else, even making the iPad 3 and Retina iPad mini ever-so-slightly thicker and heavier just to maintain 10 hours of battery life. Yet some apps, especially those that use VoIP like Skype, that use GPS like Google Maps, or those that have rogue processes or other glitches can still chew through power at an alarming rate. That's where battery shaming comes in.…
