I run Avast (free version) antivirus. Avast identified the following threat - C\USERS\(my name)\APPDATA\TEMP\MSUPDATE71Zindexer.exe - an Win32:Malware-gen. I ran my antivirus, quick scan + deep scan + boot scan, the virus was identified but could not be removed - error 42111 ( the operation is not supported for this type of archive.) Every time the antivirus pop up comes up, displaying this message, the cpu goes up to 100%. This pop up happens often, once every minute or two. Any advise will be appreciated. I have a non-usb finger print reader based on UART and I am trying to interface it to my computer. Basically when the system is booted and is running I can send serial data to my finger print reader and get a reply typically an authentication of a finger print back. I have the device specification and I am communicating with the device by using termios and my problem is I want to do this in the login-screen. So, my Idea is to run a custom program while the system is at login screen to communicate with my device and get the authentication back. The device stores the fingerprint templates on board and just sends an authentication packet back. Any suggestions to mak…

After a spurned attempt to acquire Snapchat for $3 billion last year, Facebook is gearing up to launch its own ephemeral messaging app, internally codenamed "Slingshot". The app, which is said to have a "simple and speedy user interface" (not unlike Snapchat) is designed to take on Snapchat with short video and photo messages that disappear after one viewing. The app has reportedly been in the works for several months, and might launch as early as this month. While the operation of Snapchat is relatively traditional, Financial Times reports that Slingshot's interface will be even more streamlined: Slingshot takes a different approach. It is said to resemble Tap…

Each week, the editors at iMore take a look at what's available in iTunes and pick their favorite items for your consideration. The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have created some of the most hilarious offbeat comedy to come out of Britain in years, including the zombie sendup Shaun of the Dead, the riff on big-budget action movies Hot Fuzz and the alien invasion goof The World's End. Two months after being snapped up by AT&T as part of the Leap Wireless acquisition, there's a new Cricket in town. The newly relaunched prepaid carrier service is being rolled together with AT&T's home-brewed AiO Wireless prepaid brand, and will eventually transition off Cricket's MVNO agreement with Sprint (that's an awkward position for AT&T, eh?) to devices that run on AT&T's own network. As a budget pre-paid carrier, Cricket is offering three low-cost smartphone plans. All include unlimited talk and text, which has become the bare minimum for any carrier plan these days. The real money is in the data package, where a Cricket customer could get 500…

I have just bought Windows 8 and installed it without problem. I then tried to update to 8.1, however this is not working. The update process starts and the computer reboots, then I get the booting up screen which says that windows is installing and it always gets to about 60%, then I just get a black screen and the computer becomes unresponsive. If I reboot manually it then eventually reverts to the old windows version giving an error. I have tried refreshing windows - but again the same thing happens - black screen when booting, then reverts to previous setup when I reset manually. I don't want to reset windows as I don't want to lose my documents/pictures or copy …
