Load Ubuntu onto wiped chromebook?
by Guest ashbekah- 0 replies
Hello everybody. I have a hp pavilion chromebook 14. I am wondering if there is someway to wipe chrome os off of it and put a clean install of ubuntu or linux onto it. I have read that it is nearly impossible to remove chrome but I really want to. I am currently running chrome os with ubuntu via crouton and it is not just cutting it for me. Chrome os is not very good and I am tired of using it. I was thinking maybe I could put a disc image onto a usb drive and load it on that way. I do not have a cd drive on this chromebook so I would not be able to run a standard live cd. I have 3 usb ports and an hdmi port. Just to reiterate: I do not want to run both chrome os and linu…

My first post
by Guest Tuolumne- 0 replies
The XP discontinuation debacle has caused me decide to make the leap to Linux... albeit slowly. On the up side of this transition, the system I'll start with is an older AMD machine I use for secondary chores and is free to play with. The down side is that I've been around computers long enough to often sound like I know what I'm talking about and I don't! My first task is to identify a distribution that will hopefully meet my needs. I currently use OpenOffice and Firefox so I assume there will be no issue there. I also spend time making web pages using WAMP which means I spend a lot of time with PHP, phpMyAdmin and mySQL. I run my pages under localhost, rarely…

I have no audio in ubuntu 14.04
by Guest Clayman1000x- 0 replies

I am working on a Toshiba Satellite P105-6024 laptop, Ubuntu 14.04 with the Cairo-Dock installed, I have no sound but a when a UBCD disk is in it gives me error beeps when I hit some keys while waiting for it to appear onscreen. I did a search, several wordings exactly, and found no responses. I cannot get the sound to work. So I installed Win 7 on a different partition and the sound didn't work out of the box there either. I let Windows try and install a driver but it failed a couple of times. But then, I downloaded the Vista driver "Conexant Audio Driver for Vista" from the Toshiba website, "file:driver_audio_conexant_25636A.exe" and it installed and worked, so I know…

[Help] Script to monitor logs
by Guest romanrsr- 0 replies
Hello friends, as they are? First of all sorry for my poor English. I tell them what is my problem. I have the following script, which is basically what makes error search for a pattern within a folder containing logs. The script works fine, the problem is that whenever I find a pattern of new error, I send an email with all faults, and I just want to send me new errors found. Can anyone give me a hand? Thank you! Code: errors=$(grep "System Error Pattern Here" /var/log/) echo "$errors" > /tmp/current-errors.log if [ -e "/tmp/prior-errors.log" ] then echo "prior-errors.log Exists" > /dev/null else touch /tmp/prior-errors.log | echo "…

iOS 8 wants: Privacy Sheets to make permissions manageable
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Back in February 2012 I wrote about, in part, the need for more granular privacy controls for the iPhone and iPad. Later that year we got them in the form of iOS 6 Privacy Settings. Apps had to ask you for permission to use each and every one of them, but they'd ask one after the other. "[App] would like to use your current location", tap, "[App] would like to access your Twitter account", tap, "[App] would like to send you push notifications", tap, "[App] would like to—" You know the modal pain to which I'm referring. That's why I also wrote about the need for a saner, simpler management system — a Privacy Sheet. And that's why, on the eve of iOS 8, I'm writing about it …

Norway deems iCloud agreement 'convoluted and unclear', breaks law
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
Forbrukerrådet, the Norwegian Consumer Council (we're just going to call them that going forward) is accusing Apple of breaking Norwegian law with their iCloud terms and conditions. At issue is that the aforementioned terms and conditions reserve many legal rights for Apple, and practically none for the users. The Norwegian Consumer Council has lodged a complaint with the Norwegian Consumer Ombudsman over the issue. Finn Mystrad, head of the Consumer Council's digital services unit, said: "Receiving notice when terms change should be a bare minimum requirement. The fact that this can be done without informing the users is unacceptable." That Apple is able …

Apple has updated Logic Pro X, its pro-level audio editing software for Mac, with a fixes and improvements. These improvements include support for 24 processing threads in the 12-core Mac Pro models. There are smaller improvements and fixes in version 10.0.7. For instance, you can now insert the current volume, pan, and send values for every selected track into the playhead position. A fix for Low Latency Mode eliminates a sync issue with integrated step sequencers. You can copy and paste automation to any location using the Marquee too. A new option can let MIDI volume and pan data control instrument plug-ins in place of the channel strip. Problems with the snap and…

Gunnar Optiks Intercept Colors computer eyewear review
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies

If you use the computer for hours each day, Gunnars can make it easier on your eyes If you watched any of the videos I posted from Macworld|iWorld 2014 or even a recent iMore Show video podcast (all available on our YouTube channel), you might have noticed a peculiar set of eyewear on me. I was testing Gunnar Optiks' new Intercept Colors, glasses especially designed for computer users. I've known about Gunnars for a few years. The company has risen to prominence partly because of its profile with computer gamers. But the reason they've become popular with a segment of gamers is equally applicable to anyone who uses the computer for long periods: Gunnars are engine…

Join us at a //Publish/ Event
by Guest Larry Lieberman- 0 replies

The last mile of finishing an app can be the most trying for developers. This week on May 16-17, Microsoft and community experts are teaming up to produce a global event taking place in 60 cities across 38 countries, called //Publish/, designed to provide support to you, our developers around the world. The event will provide coaching and 1:1 consulting – all in an effort to help get your apps over the finish line, and published in the Windows Store. Hackathons help developers connect and learn from peers and experts. //Publish/ is similar to a hackathon, but better. There are lots of cool prizes, of course. But, the difference is that you can bring your in-progress a…

So I've been looking everywhere for answers and I simply can't find one.. When I save pictures from Twitter, in specific, it doesn't show my thumbnails and I really need them. All that appear is a blue landscape icon but it has little blue edges on them, so perhaps it's locked? I tried unticking the box "show icons only, not thumbnails" but it only changes the thumbnails without the blue edges. This is what the ones I can't open looks like apposed to what the others look like I really need help because I can't get work done without seeing the thumbnails. Continue reading...

DVD Burners that can change video record time (like the VHS-DVD burners).
by Guest David P Weaver- 0 replies

I have videos on my computer that are larger than the 4.3Gb DVDs. Is there a burner out there that can scale down my videos (similar to my VHS-DVD player/burner where I can change the record time from 1 hour up to six hours). I use a burner called Magic DVD Copier and Ripper, it works great, but will not adjust the size/time as I need. I have Windows 8 (came with the machine), otherwise I would not have this silly op. sys. Thanks for any suggestions that you might have. David Continue reading...
