When I later turned my computer back on all the icons had changed to have the Windows Media Center symbol in them. When I try to open a program, Windows Media Center is what opens no matter what. <Moved from VM> Continue reading...

Windows 7 computer repeatedly reverts to factory settings
by Guest Mike8134- 0 replies
Several times now, my wife's HP laptop has reverted to what appears to be the original Windows 7 install, including the factory wallpaper, which is how we know that today is not going to be a good one for computing in our household.. Her files are all there, in the right places, but when I try to run any office program, the computer acts as though I'm installing Office for the first time. Nor does it recognize other programs she uses, such as iTunes. The first time this happened I called HP support but wound up in Bangalore with a script reader who kept telling me to reformat the hard drive, which would have resulted in everything being lost. I've been using computer…

Windows Defender takes forever to do a full/ custom scan
by Guest Robert Stephenson- 0 replies
I am using Windows Defender on a laptop and have noticed that it will start to sleep part way through the scan. If I do not interrupt the sleep mode Window Defender will pause and wait for me to wake up the laptop, this may be several days before I return. I have done everything possible to prevent the sleep cycle from occurring, including setting the power management to "Never turn off", staying nearby so I can stop the laptop from cycling. But this can only be done if I have the time to actually be available to perform this task which should be unnecessary to perform anyway. Continue reading...

Windows Defender wont turn on after malwarebytes trial
by Guest Z eZ y- 0 replies

Windows8.1 I just noticed the Action Center alert in my notification area today and it says that my spyware/antivirus programs are turned off. I go to windows defender and it says that it is turned off so I open windows defender and press the "Turn on" button, defender then grays out for about a minute and gives me the error code 0x800705b4 Real-time protection couldn't be turned on. This operation returned because the timeout period expired. I accidentally accepted the premium trial version of MalwareBytes when I downloaded it a while ago. I have since uninstalled it and used their full uninstallation software here. I have not used any other antivirus progra…

Ads popping up all over my new laptop
by Guest NeilZC- 0 replies
So ever since the first time I opened a browser (went from IE to downloading Chrome, but I've had the same issue) I have been getting ads popping up on the left, bottom, and right sides of the screen. This is incredibly frustrating, and I have no clue how to fix it. If I wanted a computer to spam me with ads after I clicked a page, I would have kept my old Dell. I don't know if this is from computer settings or if Best Buy is punishing me for not paying for the extended warranty, but this is my first time buying a Windows based product. I don't know how much more I can take if this continues. For some background: - Using McAfee that came with the computer, an…

OSX 10.9 "Mavericks" log rotation
by Guest jnojr- 0 replies
In Mavericks, Apple has apparently moved control of log rotation to ASL. There's a 'ttl' value to determine how long log files will stick around for. I can compress them, change the way they're named, limit them by size, etc. But the one thing I cannot find is how to NOT keep one log file per day... I want to be able to say this log file should rotate weekly, or monthly, or every X days. Continue reading...

Desktop question (I think)
by Guest smilejack1- 0 replies
I'm about to take the plunge into Linux, and I'm looking for a few things. One of them is a keyboard-driven experience with high degrees of customizability, and while I'm not a particularly sophisticated computer user and want a user-friendly experience, I'm not intimidated by a (fairly) steep learning curve coming from Win 7. I've gotten the idea that right setup for me is more a matter of desktops than distros, and that if I install say, Mint or Ubuntu, I can use any desktop I want. Am I correct in this, and if so, would some flavor of KDE be a good place to start? All help is appreciated...l Continue reading...

Rookie-ish Home Folder Question
by Guest smilejack1- 0 replies
I briefly had Ubuntu on a machine several years ago, but the hard drive failed before I had delved deeply into it. I'm going to install Mint or Ubuntu in a dual-boot w/ Win 7. I currently have the My Music and My Videos on a 2nd hard drive and plan to move the rest of My Docs there before installing Linux. Is it feasible to use this drive as my home folder? If so, will the default Music/Video/Pictures folders in the home folder identify my media, or alternately, can I configure them to use the My Music/My Video/My Pictures folders? If I can't use that drive as the home folder, can I still configure the default folders in Home to use My ****** folders? All help is…

Adjusting mouse response and tracking speed
by Guest jkwilborn- 0 replies
Hi all... I have been running Linux for over a year now and have always had a problem with the mouse being way too sensitive to touch. I've been in the speed configuration and it's set to the 'slowest' value you can set. Having dealt with this ad nauseum, I'm hoping that someone will come up with a good way to do this, that works! I've seen many 'solutions', but none of them work. I've seen using 'xinput --list' used, but it's apparently not loaded and not knowing what I'm actually using seems to be a problem. I would prefer answers that let me read the docs and solve the problem instead of a quick fix as I'm sure next time I upgrade or change something it will be a…

You can now text to 911 in an emergency
by Guest Adam Zeis- 0 replies
Starting today, you'll be able to send a text message to 911 in an emergency situation. The service will be supported by AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile. Text 911 is only available in a small set of select cities to start, however it will be rolled out everywhere by the end of 2014. Using the service is easy, just send a new text message to 911 with the details of your emergency — though you'll need to remember to send your location as pinning things down over text isn't the same as it is with phone calls. You'll also be able to send a photo along with your message, though that feature isn't supported across the board just yet. You can read more on the Text…

Apple's Beats deal reportedly pushed back until next week
by Guest Harish Jonnalagadda- 0 replies

Apple's deal to purchase Beats for $3.2 billion, which began as a rumor last week, is now reportedly being pushed back to next week. Re/code Apple's planned deal to buy Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion may not be finalized until next week, according to people familiar with the transaction. That's a longer timetable than some people expected as recently as a few days ago. While neither company has officially confirmed the talks, Dr. Dre posted a video last week in which he says that he is "the first billionaire in hip-hop." To add further fuel to the fire, a rumor from earlier this week suggested that Apple might introduce Beats founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovi…

First smartphone 'kill switch' bill in the US passed by… Minnesota
by Guest Harish Jonnalagadda- 0 replies
The Governor of Minnesota signed a new bill into law that prohibits the sale of any smartphone without anti-theft software pre-installed. The idea is to deter criminals from stealing handsets in the first place by allowing users to remotely disable and wipe a phone's data, rendering it useless. If a stolen phone is remotely disabled, there wouldn't be any monetary incentive left in the endeavour. While the legislation does not mention the exact nature of anti-theft measures that need to be installed, it does state that all devices need to be "equipped with preloaded anti-theft functionality or be capable of downloading that functionality." Similar bills are underway …

Valid security patch or phishing?
by Guest RussellWahlig- 0 replies

Last night (5/14) when I shut down my XP computer I got the security code shield and the message not to shut down the computer as it would do so automatically after the updates were installed. Since there were supposed to be no updates for XP any more I was afraid this was a false update and it just wanted me to keep my computer on for nefarious reasons. I shut it down before the " updates" were completed. Were the updates real and can I be confident that future occurrences can be trusted? Continue reading...
