Is ammyy safe?
by Guest MikeWilson49- 0 replies

I recently had a problem with my hotmail account and looked up "hotmail support" online. I found the following: Toll Free Number 1800-549-9820 , 1800-867-1858 Email = *** Email address is removed for privacy *** I contacted these guys and they fixed my account problem along with getting a load of malware off of my computer and speeding things up. They do have an Indian accent and are probably from there but I have had many dealings with them since and they have really helped out. Of course, at the onset I was very leery when having to use ammyy to give them access to my computer and I came across this website. If you are having difficulties as a result of being…

Questions about Ubuntu and Security
by Guest cmac7767- 0 replies

Hello, I am new to linux and trying to get a handle on things. The last couple of days I have been trying to learn about security and the different commands you can use to scan your system. I was hoping someone could look at the results and let me know if I have any issues. My system seems to be a bit buggy with weird stuff happening from time to time. These commands were run on a live DVD of ubuntugnome. I am the only user and was only using the terminal and webserver. Thank you for your time. unhide-posix proc ubuntu-gnome/ubuntu-gnome:~$ unhide-posix proc Unhide-legacy 20121229 Copyright © 2012 Yago Jesus & Patrick Gouin License GPLv3+ : GNU GPL version…

Possible to have a bash script/cron job automatically login to a site?
by Guest mxmaniac- 0 replies
I've had situations where I'm required to log into a website every 2 weeks, or every month to keep a service active. One example is no-ip, the dynamic dns service. If you don't login each month, your stuff gets deleted. I'm wondering if its possible to have a cron job, that runs a bash script, that logs into a website every 10 days or so? I know mostly how to do this, except for the login part. Normally your required to click the mouse on the login fields, type credentials, press enter, etc. I tried going to various sites with the plaintext type format of user(colon)password(at)sitename, but that didn't work. How can I make a bash script login to the site? Co…

I have an old Dell Dimension 2400 with 1GB of memory running CentOS 6.5. The last few times I've updated the kernel the newer versions don't seem to load successfully. The system seems to boot and then screens goes black. Since Grub seems to be only keeping the last five (5) kernel versions I'm running out of options. Here are the versions: CENTOS (2.6.32-431.17.1.e16.i686) <-- NEW Doesn't Work CENTOS (2.6.32-431.5.1.e16.i686) <-- Doesn't Work CENTOS (2.6.32-431.1.2.0.1.e16.i686) <-- Doesn't Work CENTOS (2.6.32-358.23.2.e16.i686) <-- Boots successfully CENTOS (2.6.32-358.18.1.e16.i686) <-- Boots successfully CENTOS (2.6.32-358.14.1.e16.i686) <-- …

Ubuntu Restart Issue on Acer Aspire 6920g
by Guest saad202- 0 replies
Hi everyone, It's nice to meet you all. This is my first post here on the forum. I've been having a problem with my laptop restarting and I just can't find the solution anywhere. I recently booted up my Acer Aspire 6920g running Ubuntu 13.10 that's been in storage for 4 months and it's running fine while on battery power. But the minute I plug it in, it restarts every few minutes without warning. I have ruled out the possibility of a power cable issue since this will happen even if my laptop is plugged in with a full battery. In summary, On battery: Runs fine. Plugged in: Restarts every few minutes. Let me know what you guys think of this problem. Thank…

The Terminal Galaxy S5, Heathrow, and the value of just saying 'no'
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Update: Heathrow has sent iMore a clarification to what Samsung is actually doing — and not doing — at Terminal 5 I awoke this morning to the news that Heathrow Airport in the U.K was going to allow Terminal 5 — reportedly the busiest terminal in the world — to be rebranded as 'Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5' for two weeks. I immediately checked the source link to make sure it wasn't a lesser Onion-style satirical outlet, and the date to make sure it wasn't April 1st. Neither were the case. Via Android Central: Russell Taylor, Vice President, Corporate Marketing, at Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland, said: "We are always looking for ways to maximise brand impact a…

One on one with the Apple Store's One to One training
by Guest Mrs Ritchie- 0 replies

Editor's note: While the more frequent, tech-savvy of iMore's readers might already know their way around an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, for anyone new to Apple, or family and friends not-so-familiar, Apple Retail offers an amazing array of training options that really don't get the attention they deserve. My mom had the opportunity to check out One to One recently and was so thrilled with the experience she offered to write about it for us. Needless to say, I loved the idea. Here's her review! - Rene Last month I wrote a review of the iPhone 5c and what it had come to mean to mean in just half a year. One of the things I mentioned in my review was that there were several th…

Word Lens developer snapped up by Google
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies

Google has purchased Quest Visual, the company behind Word Lens, an app that translates text in the world using the iPhone's camera. The technology from Word Lens is expected to be incorporated into Google Translate. The Word Lens language packs will be made free during the transition to Google, according to the Quest Visual website: As a thank you to everybody who supported us on our journey, we've made both the app and the language packs free to download for a limited time while we transition to Google. Word Lens is currently available for iOS, Android, and Google Glass. Interestingly, the app was recently featured in Apple's "Powerful" ad. Do you use Word Le…

Apple being sued because someone forgot to turn off iMessage when they switched to Android
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies
A scorned ex-iPhone user is suing Apple over lost text messages that she is not able to receive after switching from an iOS device to a smartphone on another platform. Apple's iMessage service doesn't de-activate the iMessage service when a user switches to a non-Apple phone. In this case, messages do not get delivered and the service thinks that the message should be routed as an iMessage rather than a traditional SMS or MMS, meaning that switchers away from Apple would not receive messages from their iOS counterparts. The suit, filed in a San Jose court and seeking class action status, comes after Apple began acknowledging this glitch earlier this month. For swi…

Old business dell laptop with Windows XP. Forgotten login, what to do next?!
by Guest April Ski- 0 replies
When packing up to move, I uncovered a relic from an old job. An old Dell laptop that turns on just fine and worked perfectly well when I did use it. The problem is,I cannot login. It's set up for the business's network and it's the only option so even if I did remember my login, I'm not sure it would work. Plus, I wasn't listed as THE admin, all I was allowed to do was chose what to download. I don't really NEED anything off of it but I would like to be able to get it working so I can give it to my son for his birthday next week. What do I do next? I have an old Windows XP cd with the serial number on it. Not sure it's ever been used, I've had it for many ma…

Arc Keyboard and questionable compatible OS requirements
by Guest JB_83- 0 replies
I have a laptop (that is still running XP, no I can't upgrade yet) keyboard that has certain keys that are dying suddenly. (For the record, it's the F, G, J, L, and / keys.) In a panic, I went out and bought an Arc Keyboard (by Microsoft), and every website--including Best Buy's site, which is where I bought it--says that it'll run on XP. I get it home, look at the box again and--and I don't see XP mentioned anywhere on the system requirements. Just Windows 8, RT, 7 and Vista. I don't want to waste my time (and money) opening this thing just to find out it's not gonna work with my laptop. Any advice about the keyboard? Should I just take it back? And hope…

Hi, I'm using an Acer Iconia W4 tablet with Win 8.1 installed and tried to restart the machine in Safe mode (Minimal via msconfig) to be able to remove a buggy antivirus program. Now Windows starts up and I get all the way to the login screen for my account, but the screen is unresponsive and I can't enter my password or do a restart or anything. Any thoughts what to do? Basically stuck here and can't even seem to reset Windows even though that is a massive pain to set everything up again. Thanks Continue reading...

Correct DirectX downloads to reinstall for 64-bit windows 7?
by Guest SlickRCBD- 0 replies

I am having issues with any game that uses DirectX, or more specifically DirectDraw or Direct3D as far as I can tell. I have some games that MUST have DirectX 9.0c, and what came with Vista or 7 would not help. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit professional, but I have a dual-boot system with Vista 64-bit home premium and the games I had installed under Vista still work fine while they refuse to run under 7. I used a disk-saving trick of installing the games under 7 to the same directory on the Vista partition, so they can't be corrupted unless it is the registry, but that is suspicious that all games are affected. I attempted to run dxdiag, but both the standard and …
