Hello, How safe is my friend using the Windows XP for her banking whilst she is in a care home? (That could be short term or permanent, unknown as yet.) She has not used the Toshiba laptop for coming up to 6 months. I am not sure if she uses Norton or MacAfee but it is definitely one of those, for computer security or if it is even up to date. She doesall her banking on-line as she has been unable to leave the house for 3 years before her 4 month stint in hospital. I'm sure this was easy to do before. When I right click Temporary Internet Files, Properties, under Attributes, Read Only is checked in light gray and I can uncheck it, click Apply, but when I come back to it its checked again. Also, at the top of this folder's columns (Details View in Windows Explorer), there is nothing in them. Every other column in other folders is titled. When I right click the column space at the top (so you can choose which columns you want by checking and unchecking) I have a vertical column of nothing but check marks. My HP a1510n needed a new hard drive and I, like a lot of users, did not create recovery discs. I am now trying to locate a copy of Windows XP Media Edition 2005 so I can run my bank's check scanning app (their scanning software won't work with Win 7 or Win 8). I loaded a copy of Windows XP professional but get errors against: (?) Other Devices (?) OtherPCI Bridge Device (?) PCI Simple Communications Controller (?) Unknown Device (?) All seems to go smoothly up to that point. I searched for help and found a place that suggested I run a short program to check my download operation. It found two parts containing errors and corrected them. Another try produced same results. One attempt ran through the process of determining if the installed 8 program was OK. I can not seem to be able to access the store app or any bing apps. This is weird because it was working just last week. It has been several days since this issue occurred When I try to access the store it says it can not access the server. The bing apps will also not work. I was using my laptop normally, until the keyboard stopped working. I tried to restart the laptop, but the screen froze, so I removed the battery. I had to edit this post, because I was giving poor information about my problem... Well here comes again... I decided to give maintenance to my laptop so I formatted it last night, then today at morning I started with the windows updates (was the first thing i did, so I haven't installed programs). It started to download like 110 updates, when finished, asked me to restart, and I did it. As other times, it configure the first 30% before to restart, and then when it restart got stuck in the message of "Failure configuring Windows updates...". Hi everyone, I've been having problems with multiple BSODs recently. I initially thought it was because my drivers were not up to date as I got the BSODs while I was playing games fullscreen. I updated my graphics card drivers, but the problem still currently persists. It has gotten more frequent and I get a BSOD even when I'm just using a single simple program like Microsoft Word. However, some threads I have seen, albeit old ones admittedly, suggest Defender is only an anti spyware tool Can you please confirm if Defender is also an anti virus tool for users running 8.1 OS? If not then should I download another Anti Virus tool, such as Security Essentials? For the past few weeks, on any browser I'm running - IE 11 or Chrome, I'm getting constant re-directs when I click on links - whether they're web forums, Yahoo pages, Google results - anything... I get a new tab telling me I have to update Win 7 drivers, or I have to update my media player. I tried to install a blocker and lots of these came from *.dollfield.eu and lpmxp***.com (where *** is a number), downloadfilesaver.com or downloadju.com - and I get an automatic download of a file - usually Player-Chrome.exe or another that has to do with Flas forced into my Downloads directory. A few months ago I was expecting an email from a friend so naturally opened it but stupid like also opened an attachment. Obviously he'd been hacked and I was shown instead a slimming advert. Realised and immediately logged off/deleted it. Ran Norton and changed my passwords but am still a bit concerned in view of todays news reports.
