Microphone not working on Centos 6.5
by Guest OtagoHarbour- 0 replies
I have installed CentOS 6.5 on a Dell Insperion with an Intel chip. I first noticed that my microphone is not working on Skype on CentOS although it was working fine with Windows 7 on the same box. The speakers work fine on both operating systems. I did the following test. Code: arecord -vv -d 10 test.wav aplay -vv test.wav and did not get any sound played back. I went to System:Preferences:Sound to get the Sound Preferences dialog. I went to the Input tab and "Microphone" was selected as the connector. I turned the input volume up to maximum and spoke into the microphone but the "Input level" boxes all remained a light gray like it was disabled. The only option for…

How can I get my external Lightscribe DVD-RW Drive working.
by Guest TNFrank- 0 replies
Well, not exactly working because it does burn DVD's but getting the Lightscribe part working so I can label my DVD's after I burn them? I've downloaded everything I can find under Lightscribe in Octopi from the AUR(I'm using Manjaro) and can't find a GUI in the menu and nothing happens in Terminal when I type "lightscribe" so I'm stumped. I've love to get this part of the lightscribe drive working so I can put away the Sharpie and use it to label my DVD's. Thanks. Continue reading...

Swarm for iPhone review: It's not Foursquare, and here's why that's great!
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
Swarm by Foursquare is a new social checkin and meetup up for iPhone. At first I was a little stumped. Why would I need Swarm if my friends and I already use Foursquare? However, as I started using Swarm I started to change my mind. It's a different app and it's useful for something that's both similar and yet very different from Foursquare — seeing what your friends are up to and figuring out how and where to meet up with them. Anyone who already uses Foursquare should understand the basic concepts of Swarm immediately. Just as you would check in on Foursquare, you can do the same through Swarm. The main difference is that Swarm is meant to be used when you are look…

How to block Facebook game requests on iPhone and iPad
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
If you don't play Candy Crush Saga, or any other Facebook game for that matter, but you keep getting requests for lives and items from your Facebook friends, you're probably past frustrated. I've even seen some friends delete people or unfollow them simply to stop the never ending stream of game requests. Unfortunately, sometimes people don't realize they're spamming their friends. Luckily, there's an easier way to stop game requests than deleting or unfollowing your friends. How to block all Facebook game and app requests on iPhone and iPad Launch the Facebook app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on the More button in the bottom navigation. Tap on Settings — it's all…

Apple once again speculated to be the first trillion dollar company — here's why
by Guest Chris Umiastowski- 0 replies

A few weeks ago Scott Galloway, the Clinical Professor of Marketing at NYU, gave an incredibly fascinating presentation at the DLD conference in New York. I just happened to notice the YouTube video of his presentation today. He spoke for about 23 minutes in an action packed presentation on the winners and losers of the digital age. I highly recommend watching the entire thing, and we've embedded the video below. The final part of his presentation is particularly relevant to Apple shareholders and fans. Galloway explains why he thinks Apple can (and will) become the world's first trillion dollar company as measured by market capitalization. Fast forward to the 19:53 …

by Guest JamesPHood- 0 replies

I have two computers, a Desktop running Windows 7 (wired internet connection) and a laptop running XP (wireless connection), both connecting to the internet through the same router. I did have them set up to network to each other and I could share files etc no problem. Owing to various problems with my Windows 7 PC I had to reinstall Windows 7 on it. For some reason I can't seem to get the network set up properly again. This is what I'm getting: - Windows 7 computer can access files on XP laptop no problem at all - Windows XP laptop can ping the Windows 7 PC but can't access the workgroup (yes I've checked they have the same name!) If I try going into the workg…

Trouble seeing Homegroup on network
by Guest DeBlock- 0 replies
I have 2 computers on my network. One is Windows 7 (W7) and the other Windows 8.1 (W8). Each sees a Homegroup but not each other's. I have left the homegroup from my W8 computer but it only gives me the option to create a new homegroup - not to join a homegroup. I tried creating a new Homegroup but that did not help. My W7 computer will not allow me to leave the homegroup. I have made sure that Discover Homegroup is turned on under Advanced settings of my W7 computer. The computers cannot see each other in "Windows Explorer" either under Homegroup or Network. On my W7 computer, View or print the homegroup password - does nothing. no response Change the password…

How to disable Windows Defender daily definition updates
by Guest Xircal- 0 replies
For a moment, I thought I could disable WD's daily definition downloads using the following tutorial, but the Properties box for MPCmdRun.exe (second pix up from the bottom) doesn't include the same options as described in the tutorial: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/update-windows-defender-automatic-windows-updates-disabled I've already disabled WD as can be seen from the screenshot, so I don't see any need to clog up my system with its daily definition updates. But I can't find any means of preventing these from downloading. I've already checked the Properties boxes for all the other executables in the WD folder, but they all contain the same basic info i.e. "Gener…
