With iBooks tied up by courts, Amazon runs roughshod over publishers
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
When the U.S. government sued Apple over its entry into the ebooks market there was a fear that the action would result in Amazon, who already enjoyed a dominant market position, increasing their power to potentially abusive levels. So, was that fear justified? According to the New York Times: Amazon's power over the publishing and bookselling industries is unrivaled in the modern era. Now it has started wielding its might in a more brazen way than ever before. Seeking ever-higher payments from publishers to bolster its anemic bottom line, Amazon is holding books and authors hostage on two continents by delaying shipments and raising prices. The literary communit…

X-Men: Days of Future Past is in theaters now — Here's how to catch up on iTunes!
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

X-Men: Days of Future Past is an attempt to fuse the original X-Men movies — at least the first two good ones — with the X-Men: First Class relaunch from a couple of years ago. As much as the first X-Men movie helped kick off the modern superhero blockbuster, FOX did everything they could to kill it, including and especially rushing X-Men: The Last Stand out the door with an almost scorched-earth agenda, and making an X-Men Origins Movie so bad most of us wished we had healing factors. First class had a middling cast of mutants but a good cast of actors and The Wolverine actually managed to redeem the spin-off. So, is X-Men: Days of Future Past really the mutant movie we'…

Rumored reasons rumored Apple/Beats deal hasn't been rumored done
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Why hasn't the rumored, rumored delayed, rumored still on, Apple/Beats unannounced acquisition not been announced yet? First, if that sounds a little meta or self-consuming, that's because it is. Second, everything from the ill-considered Gibson/Dre video to the complexities of the agreement to the alignment of the stars (not in the sky) seems to be on the list. According to Billboard Apparently, the Apple family near imploded with outrage when that video went up on Facebook of an 'excited' Dr. Dre with R&B singer/former Coca Cola pin-up Tyrese. In the video they share, in language perhaps unsuitable for a family blog, how Dre will be hip-hop's first billionaire…

Tapbots rolling out critical update for Tweetbot
by Guest Chris Parsons- 0 replies
If you're a user of the fabulous Tapbots Twitter app Tweetbot, you'll want to listen up. A critical update to the app is now filtering through the iTunes App Store and arriving on iOS devices. It's critical due to the fact that if you don't update, any versions of Tweetbot prior to 2.8.8 or 3.2.2 will stop working and you may need to log into your account again. The reason for the update is a small change with how Tweetbot communicates with Twitter as noted on the Tapbots blog. A couple weeks ago Twitter's Platform Operations group contacted us and asked us to make a small change to the way Tweetbot communicates with the Twitter API. This change will have no affe…

Playing some older games at the moment In Halo Combat Evolved after first getting the warthog you go through a tunnel system and come to a bridge, as I drive down the ramp the screen turns purple with the hud overlayed and I have no control, then the game resets to a savepoint just immediately before you turn onto the ramp down to the bridge. XP SP3 32bit, Dual core E6400 3GB ram Geforce 9500gt with latest drivers and a good copy of directx 9.0c Everything before this is fine original version 1.0 patched to 1.09 manually then automatically to 1.1. How can I install Windows 8 64-bit over Windows 8.1 32-bit? My laptop has a 64-bit CPU, but when I had a hard drive error and I reinstalled Windows 7 32-bit(this was before I had Windows 8) then when I bought Windows 8 and installed it, and it installed as a 32-bit Windows since I used the digital install. Then I updated my PC to Windows 8.1, and I recently found out that Microsoft made a program to make a 64-bit installation disk with a .iso file. So to recap, I wanted to know how can I install Windows 8 64-bit over Windows 8.1 32-bit, and would I able able to keep my files and settings? Thanks in advance! Continue reading...

by Guest Aedann- 0 replies

Hi, I've looked at other threads regarding this issue but they all seem to talk about Vista etc. I have windows 8 (legit copy) and I cannot enter my activation key anywhere. The slui program will not open, I get an error. Filling in the activation key again isn't possible either. I've tried the following from other threads 1. Type services.msc, and then press Enter. 2. In the list of services locateSoftware Licensing 3. Right-click it, selectProperties 4. Change “Startup type:” toAutomatic, then click OK but that doesn't work for me because 'Software licensing' isn't in the list to begin with. How can I change this? Continue reading…

Windows Media Player saturation and contrast are too high
by Guest Mantoide- 0 replies

Hi there, I'm playing video WMV and MP4 files in VLC and DivX players and they look just fine, but when I open them in Windows Media Player the saturation and contrast is way high. It's also impossible to readjust the brightness/contrast/hue/saturation using the WMP settings to fix the issue. It seems that there are no solutions to this problem anywhere, not even in some older similar threads. By the way, turning Windows Features on and off or using the WMP troubleshoot tool doesn't solve anything. Any thoughts? Continue reading...

by Guest Goldjr- 0 replies

I purchased my laptop with an upgrade to a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M video card. After downloading an architectural program, the program said it detects two (2) video cards. The manufacturer of the program stated that the video card I'm using, Intel® HD Graphics Family, isn't powerful enough for the program graphics. and I should activate the NVIDIA card. I had no idea I wasn't running with the GeForce card I speced. How do I go about activating the NVIDIA card that I wish to use and deactivate the other? Continue reading...

Hi there. I hope someone can help me. My web browsing experiences are a nightmare at the moment! I have got a bunch of malware programs located in the Program Files (x86) folder but there is no option to uninstall them via the "Uninstall or change a program" tool. I have tried using Revo Uninstaller too but no luck. I am running Windows 8.1 Version 6.3 (Build 9600). I downloaded Avast Antivirus earlier today which located 103 threats. Later on, I downloaded Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool and there were no further threats found. An example of one of the programs that I need to uninstall is Plus-HD-9.5v. Please, can someone help? Continu…

CryptoLocker
by Guest SkittleLinux18- 0 replies

My dad's computer got hit with CryptoLocker a few months ago: it trashed everything. Fortunately for him, he uses Carbonite and I had his computer ghosted on my file server back at my house. That was an easy fix. However, he did have a thumb drive plugged into that got encrypted. I've been poking around with it in linux and can't get the damn thing decrypted... which I finally discovered this morning is due to CryptoLocker replacing the original files with encrypted copies and holding the originals hostage for the specified amount of time. After that time runs up, they are deleted forever. There are some really sick people in this world. Thank goodness Linux can't be h…
