I just got a new Dell Inspiron with Windows 8.1. It came with McAfee preinstalled. I did not, and do not want McAfee. I would prefer to use Windows Defender. I found the application and attempted to launch it but was informed that I had another program running that would allow it to start, I assume it is McAfee. I was going to remove McAfee but was hesitetant to leave my system open and unprotected in the event Defender still failed to start. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Continue reading...

Hi, I realize Windows comes with Microsoft Security Essentials, but my computer has been acting up and I'd like to get a deeper scan if possible, without compromising MSE. I'd like to try something else out, even if it's a one-time deal. I'm having a few problems with my computer (lost IE, which has been addressed numerous times in another forum - still no resolve and I don't want to do a restore, too many apps to reload. I'm losing volume randomly on videos embedded in emails or on Youtube, and my keystrokes are registering fast, slow, delayed, etc., randomly, especially in my gmail account. Also, scrolling is stilted at times). I've already tried eliminating apps t…

Hi List, I am trying to deploy ssl on my apache2 web server using a godaddy signed cert. These are the steps I followed: Created a key: # openssl genrsa -out domain.key 2048 Generated a CSR: # openssl req -new -key domain.key -out domain.csr Logged into godaddy and re-keyed the existing certificate. ( I went through this procedure a few times, hence the re-keying instead of just signing) Here is my vhosts.conf entry: ================================================= SSLCertificateFile /etc/httpd/ssl/xxxxxxxxxx.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/httpd/ssl/domain.key SSLCertificateChainFile /etc/httpd/ssl/gd_bundle-g2-g1.crt =============================…

Going a step further on its fight against fraudulent premium SMS charges, T-Mobile will now start proactively notifying customers of unauthorized billing of premium SMS to their account. Although customers could previously request refunds for any unknown charge on their bill, this proactive approach of identifying premium SMS scams that weren't refunded goes a step further. Mike Sievert, CMO for T-Mobile, had this to say: "If you've been charged for a third-party service you didn't sign up for, it should be easy to get a refund. If customers were charged for services they didn't want, we'll make it right. That's being the Un-carrier." From July to September, T-…

It's a good time to invest in a wireless speaker from Sonos. Today, Amazon announced that it will offer its customers a $50 credit in its online store for the purchase of select Sonos products. The special promotion applies when a person buys either the $399 Sonos Play:5 speaker or the $299 Sonos Play:3 product. Sorry, the $199 Sonos Play:1 speaker is not included in this deal. The nice thing is that the Amazon buyer doesn't have to type in a special promo code or mail something in to get the $50 credit. Once the purchase is made, the amount will be automatically added to their Amazon's account seven days after the speaker ships to the customer. The credit must be…

The new stations should be rolling out today in the US, so if you spot any of them be sure to hit up the comments and let u…

Apple has always set a high bar with their advertising, and that high bar has led to frustration with their long-time partner TBWA/MAL and the formation of an internal advertising team that Apple hopes to build to one thousand members. That's a huge team, and as previously reported, they're already producing work for Apple. The in-house team has been competing directly with TBWA/MAL to produce spots, and Apple has even pulled in other outside firms to compete, as reported by Advertising Age: [Apple is] madly building an internal agency that it's telling recruits will eventually number 1,000 -- the size of Grey Advertising. It's pitting TBWA/MAL against this intern…

Hi, I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP on a Dell computer that had the hard drive wiped. The disc loads and begins to run, but when it gets to the screen that offers the choice to Reinstall, Repair, or (reinstall certain features? can't remember) the screen seems to freeze. The options are to hit Enter, the R key, or F2or F3 I believe. It does not seem to recognize any key strike. No further activity from the computer. I have an older (2004-ish?) HP L2000 Limited Edition Livestrong laptop that I bought as a refurb off Amazon back in 2005. I LOVE this laptop. I have a problem, though. A few years ago, my drivers all went kaput. Keyboard, touchpad, USBs, all dead. The laptop will still boot up and get to the login screen, but I can't go any further because I don't have a keyboard, touchpad or USBs. There are A LOT of files that I really want off this laptop. How can I get the files off and onto a new laptop or, better yet, get this laptop working again? Continue reading...
