Got the Arch Linux Handbook, v2.0 by Dusty Phillips today. Not a very large book but it looks like it's chalked full of good info on how to get an actual Arch install going on. Going to read through it and see what I can come up with. First a bit of background (if you're interested): I've inherited a network Windows network that currently utilises a proxy provided by the ISP and enforced by in the domain by Group Policy .PAC file, it's difficult to manage as many users are local admins and can install a different browser which isn't covered by the GPO (engineers can be crafty little buggers!) Scenario: I install a Linux distro on my Core I-7 laptop with Ralink WiFi and Nvidia graphics. I get it all setup, configured and running well. I do not install any proprietary drivers. I pop this drive out and put it in my other laptop, a Core I-5 with Intel WiFi and Intel graphics. It boots and runs just fine which tells me that during the boot process the system adapts to the current hardware configuration - is this a reasonable statement? I tend to do a lot of my "experimentation" with Linux on my I-7 laptop as it's just plain fast but my daily driver is the I-5 laptop as it goes with me where ever I go. The European Commission is getting set to launch a formal investigation into whether Apple's tax arrangements in Ireland are legal, or whether they qualify as illegal state aid. In the past, whenever I'd click on Start, there was a link to the Control Panel. However, it's been missing for some time, and I've been connecting to it via other means. I'd prefer to be able to easily connect to it via Start, and need info on how to do that. Also, I've been unable to make a shortcut to the Control Panel and would like instructions how to do that. Last night I just downloaded the most recent three updates which included KB890830, the Malicious Software Removal Tool. The other two were (KB2880513) and (KB2878233). The Yellow Shield still shows that KB890830 is still available. I am running XP-Pro SP3 and IE8. Is this another occasion where I should uninstall and reinstall these updates? My system currently running on XP professional which is extremely slow to operate. My CPU is a 32-bit, 2.8Ghz pentium 4 with 80GB HDD and 2GB RAM. I have only 19GB of space for OS. I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 . Please let me know the drawbacks if there are any to upgrade to win 7. Can my system keep up with win 7. I ran auto updates all the time until I got an update that failed and just kept repeating. Called MS and paid them $99 for them to fix it. The error went away but the updates all failed to install since then and now that support is gone I can't DL the patch for IE8 because all the other updates failed to install. I think there about 40 of them. I have tried to install one at a time, manually and automaticaly and they just say install failed and give some hex code that is like 0000x8x00x80. All the codes for each different update is different, so what is on stupid guy supposed to do. I think the service guy shut off something in the registry that keeps updates from loading…

Hi all I seem to have a magical operating system which seems to have a mind of its own and is causing me worry. It would be appreciated if someone could help me. Question 1- How do I prevent applications opening documents I didn't 'clicked' to open or haven't used before? When I open the application Notepad++, it sometimes contains a document that I haven't opened. Is this something to be concerned? Hi, I reset my laptop back to Windows 8 after I failed repeatedly to apply the mandatory update KB2919355. I wanted to install updates, apply the 8.1 update, and then try reinstalling KB2919355. However, I am currently unable to apply the Windows 8.1 update from the Windows store. A few pertinent facts: I have scanned for & installed all Windows & driver updates post reset. Recently several functions (skip forward, replay, stop) on my MS Windows IR Remote controller stopped working. I've tried several remotes as well as swapping out the IR receiver (also MS product) but nothing works. Ctrl-F, Ctrl-B work from the keyboard. Any ideas? This makes media center very unusable for me. Symptoms The set of windows updates (15 "important updates") were released on May 15th 2014. After their installation (and reboot) Outlook 2010 POP3 fetch fails with 0x800CCC1A error code. Removal of the updates via Control Panel -> System and Security -> View Installed Updates does not cure this issue. I had to restore the last disk image I take regularly for backup purposes in order to get rid of this issue. My system: Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64-bit.
