Just opened an account with linuxforums and excited to be apart of the community! I've lurked some of the threads & stickies, and only one question remains... Would these be the most effective tags for such a basic install? (I am just doing a basic Gentoo system with either AwesomeWM or DWM in mind.) Code: USE=" # wanted alsa bindist dvd gcc gtk mmx pulseaudio sse sse2 # unwanted -gnome -kde -qt4 " Thanks in advance for any help! :D Continue reading...

Single Spotify account breached in bizarre compromise, iOS user data reportedly safe
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
Spotify today announced that their serves has suffered breach, providing somebody somewhere unauthorized access to their systems and "internal company data". But in a strange twist, Spotify's internal investigation into the matter turned up evidence of only one user's data having been accessed, and that data did not include anything you might consider sensitive (e.g. password or payment information). While the breach has prompted Spotify to advise Android users to update their app, they aren't recommending any action for iOS or Windows Phone users. While the single account breach is a different twist in a day and age when a breach in a service's systems often leads t…

by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
Popular news-reading client Reeder 2 got a healthy update for iPhone and iPad today. The most notable addition is background refresh, so the latest stories will always be there waiting for you without having to pull them in once the app launches. Reeder will also kick into gear when external apps refer to an RSS feed, which is a nice touch for those that are regularly adding new sites to their collection. A smattering of other tweaks are also in Reeder 2.2, like a loading progress indicator for the in-app browser. disabling favicons from showing on the subscriptions list, and a few navigational improvements. As always, Reeder brings all of your favorite sites into on…

Bizarre Australian iPhone, iPad hijack serves as yet another reminder to use unique passwords
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
There are reports coming out of Australia about iPhones and iPads somehow getting locked down by Find my iPhone, in some cases with a message claiming the devices will only be unlocked if a AUS$100 ransom is paid. What makes this bizarre is that it appears to only be happening in Australia (and the internet has no borders) and it's unclear how the attackers are accessing Find my iPhone for the devices in question. So, what's going on? One theory is that some other service was hacked and because people were using the same email and password combinations for that service and their Apple IDs, the attacker could access their iPhones and iPads online via Find my iPhone as…

visual accessability

I am running XP and need to upgrade. The win 8 assistant indicates that it will not run on a screen resolution larger than 1024 x768. Is this actually the case? Will win 7 run on the less pixels, larger screen setting? I am legally blind and doing everything to be able to keep using a computer. When I try to use the 1024 x 768 it is very difficult.. MS shouldn't you be doing things to help people like me and not make it more difficult? If I sound grouchy, it is because I just spent and hour and a half trying to guess what the picture code was to set up an account. Really small resolution on that. Enough griping. Does anyone know of any way I can get around this…

The taskbar on the computer keeps popping up.
by Guest drubosney- 0 replies

I maintain point of sale systems for a local restaurant chain. They run various versions of Windows and we are gradually updating any running XP to 7 but it's a time consuming process and we are trying to do them in a sensible order. The systems we considered last on the list run a live menu. All they do is display web content from a server on the same LAN with a proprietary browser that is supposed to stay on top of any other windows or dialogs. They have no direct user interaction whatsoever nor do they connect directly to the internet. But lately, and by lately I mean since the XP EOL, the taskbar has been popping up above the bottom edge of the menu. It creates …

Windows 8 has bad sound after first boot up.
by Guest teej107- 0 replies
I have downgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8 because Microsoft can't fix their crappy product and solve the dumb limited connection issue. Now whenever I boot up my computer for the first time, the sound quality is terrible, and when I reboot again, the sound is back to normal. This happens EVERYTIME. I have to boot up my computer twice to get it to function right. Whenever I check my sound in the sound settings and I play test the sound, it sounds normal but all the other sounds coming from other applications are bad quality. All my sound drivers are up to date as well. Any fix? Continue reading...

I have tried to install updates prior to upgrading to windows 8.1. While the critical updates appear to be installed via the auto update setting there are some optional updates that failed to install on manual selection. Error code 80072f78 appeared. I have used all the windows troubleshooting apps/programs but the issue is still remains. Also have tried to download the windows 8.1 upgrade but this also fails to download. Error 8007f78 appeared as the reason. I have searched the microsoft community site but have not found any fix here. I temporarily shut down the antivirus but that did not solve the problem. I have a wifi connection but have tested that …

Deleting Reserve.tmp file in Win8
by Guest EricKeil- 0 replies

I would like to delete the "reserve.tmp" folder in WinSxs. It was created when we got the update to prepare for W8.1 last year. It was supposed to disappear after awhile, but it remains to this day. This is 3gb of space crowding a small SSD. Is it safe to delete? I am not updating to 8.1 (please don't try to convince me). Continue reading...

Disk Space want recover after performing a drive wipe or creating disk images for burning.
by Guest Terrance Crouch- 0 replies

I used CC cleaners Drive Wipe feature (Simple Over write 1 pass) and after it completed my hard drive went from 120 gigs to 28 gigs. I used it before and it didn't do that. I have two laptops and it only does it on the one. I also notice that when I try to convert videos using that computer it eats my hard drive up and never gets back to the original size after I delete the converted file. Is their a problem with my computer registering recovered space after deleting files including free space. Has anyone had this problem before. If I restore my system the problem goes away until I use CCleaner Drive wipe program or convert video files. It seems this is only happening whe…

unsecapp.exe
by Guest John_724- 0 replies
A few days ago I noticed a new program running in the task manager called unsecapp.exe. It's in C:\Windows\System32\wbem\ and is 47,104 bytes in size. The description is "Sink to receive asynchronous callbacks for WMI client application" Ending the process doesn't seem to have any effect. It's not taking up very much memory/CPU and seems to function like any other regular background process. It was never running in the background until a few days ago, and I have no idea what's causing it. I ran several thorough virus scans and nothing came up, so I'm assuming it's safe, but I still want to know why it's running all of a sudden. Continue reading...
