On June 11, 2014, Windows downloaded, & installed half a dozen security-related Upgrades to my Windows 7 64-bit system, & within hours my anti-virus program, Rogers Online Protection (ROP) (actually Bit Defender), alerted me that it had detected a virus (Gen:Variant.Kazy.361890) in temp.edb buried in the windows\softwaredistribution folder. ROP declared my computer was not virus-free, & it could not clean it. I immediately did a complete scan, with the same ROP, & nothing was found (although 56k of items were 'Skipped'). Research online revealed that the softwaredistribution folder is used exclusively by Microsoft for down…

I more or less ended with accidentally installing a virus named "SpeeDial". I've dealt with a similar problem before (delta search), meaning I had dealt with this kind of situation before, or so i thought. Noticing I had gotten another browser highjacker I thought i'd do what I did Delta Search, which was going to the control panel and uninstalling all the programs related to said virus, however this time whilst trying to uninstall Conduit Search Protect I recieved a error message saying that I did not have sufficient access, even though I'm logged in as a admin (100% sure I'm an admin, i tripple checked). So far I've tried to tried restarting the computer, running the mi…

Hey folks! I'm afraid I'm going to be one of those guys. One of those who's had to use Linux in a pinch, doesn't know anything about it and frankly, just isn't that smart. Some background - couple days ago, my computer wouldn't boot correctly, of which friends much smarter than me decided it's probably a hard drive failure. It's just unclear which hard drive. So in the meantime, I've got Xubuntu 14.04 on a USB in order to try and figure out what's happening. Two issues - a) I can seem to access all the files on both hard drives fine on Xubuntu which is making me wonder if it actually is a Hard Drive issue and b) I have NO idea how to check for a failure on Linux. I'…

The upcoming edition of the mobile Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers game made an appearance at E3. The biggest addition to this iteration of the classic fantasy card game is that now you can custom build your decks card-for-card. Previously, you would be given a core deck and would unlock additional cards to swap in through gameplay. As usual, players put on their robe and wizard's hat in the role of an elementally-attuned planeswalker. They duel one-on-one against other interdimensional mages by summoning powerful allies, hurling spells, and wielding ancient artifacts. Five colors of spells represent different elements, each with their own play style and themes. …

This coming weekend sees the annual running of the world's greatest motor race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The ultimate test of man and machine, every year 52 teams and tens of thousands of fans decend on Northern France for the occasion. Sadly, not all of us can make that trek – though it remains top of my own personal list – and as such we're resigned to following from home. Watching a 24 hour race is an endurance in itself but thankfully with your iPhone and iPad in hand you can make it a little easier! 24 Heures du Mans - Official App The official WEC app has been rebranded for the 24 hour race given that it's the highlight of the Championship season. Apple Senior VP of Retail and Online Stores Angela Ahrendts had recently sent out her first memo to retail employees, outlining Apple's vision for retail ahead while also asking for employee feedback to improve the experience in stores. "Looking forward to the future, I feel our greatest opportunity will be continuing to focus on and evolve the consumer journey online and in our stores," Ahrendts said. "Although technology is rapidly changing how customers shop, they will still want to feel surprised and delighted by the personalized Apple experience we provide at every turn." This shouldn't come as a surprise given Apple's late CEO Steve Jobs had considered Apple to…

Update: iTunes services appear to be coming back online, though it make take some time to restore services for everybody and all devices. Original story follows. The iTunes Store and App Store are currently down for some people in some parts of the world, taking with it a bunch of the iTunes ecosystem. You aren't going to be downloading any movies, music, or TV shows, you won't be streaming off iTunes Radio, and your Apple TV won't even let you watch any such items. Poof, they're gone. iMessage, FaceTime, and other Apple web services don't appear to be affected. Apple's system status tracker is currently showing green across the board, though if this outage per…

Between the glass, concrete, steel, wood, and trees, what we have here might be the nicest cafeteria on the planet. It's no surprise that it comes from Apple, purveyor of fine modern architecture and a few electronic gizmos. Apple's new cafeteria in Cupertino, not far from their existing Infinite Loop campus, is a massive space that would be instantly recognizable as an Apple structure. Whereas most Apple retail spaces are more or less mixes of steel, glass, and occasionally some concrete or stone, this cafeteria trades in the stainless steel panels for long strips of wood. It makes for an open and inviting space, as does the presence of several trees inside and …

This blog was written by Gilles Peigné, Program Manager, Developer Ecosystem & Platform When we think about localization, we typically think in terms of translating UI strings and making sure we use globalization APIs for needs like number formatting, handling dates and times, and other region-specific settings. However, a user’s preferred language and settings do not necessarily reflect where they are located on the earth. This is commonly encountered with users who travel, where they want the UI of their apps to appear in their preferred language but want the content presented by those apps to be sensitive to their travel destinations. This is also a common need …

I have an old Windows XP laptop (Dell D600 Pentium 4) that is adequate for reading email and surfing the web, but it's getting slow and I am looking for a replacement. I've looked at Chromebooks and read about the Surface Pro 3 but they all seem to be missing things I have on this laptop and I hate widescreen laptops. I have a small Macbook but it's a little old too and I prefer to use that for specific things and portability and not just a general kitchen computer. I have a small laptop stand (the kind you buy at Walmart) and anything bigger than my D600 makes it a little awkward to use the mouse. The Surface Pro 3 looks better than the current widescreen lapto…

I'm writing this from an XP laptop (haven't found a suitable replacement yet) but it would be nice to know how to do this on any version of Windows, but I would like to know how to auto-start apps on log in so that a folder opens up, my Live Mail app opens up (preferably only after WiFi is connected), and then Chrome, and preferably so that they show in the right order in the task bar. Also, if there is some setting to have Live Mail only Sync after WiFi is connected, that would be great to know. Whatever you can give me I will take! Continue reading...

I have just bought a new Samsung laptop. It came with Windows 8 installed on it and after about 3 weeks, the mail stopped working, it came up with a message that said my email address was unavailable. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting and that doesn't work. I then tried to set up via a Microsoft account, this doesn't seem to work either, I have tried putting the code in that was sent to me, but the process goes round in circles with the same screens. (fortunately I still have my old laptop and the email address works on that). Now I can't even get in to the Windows 8 mail, never mind send or receive emails from it. Any idea's what's wrong and what I can…
