Keyboard strokes
by Guest jim garnett- 0 replies

I am using Windows 7, and about 2 weeks ago, I noticed that when the computer was in standby mode for some period of time (20-30 minutes or more) and you started it back up again, I could not type anything using the keyboard because the strokes would not register. As an example, I use Windows Live Mail and if I tried to create a new email, when I typed, nothing happened. When in Internet Explorer, if I tried to log onto one of my accounts (bank, etc.), when I tried to type in the ID/password, nothing happened, the cursor just blinked. If I restart the computer, then everything works fine until it stays in standby mode again for some period of time. I could use some…

by Guest IJAMES5677- 0 replies
I have all the information for this problem I hope. I recently installed Auslogics virus program. It wasn't working for me so I uninstalled it. I tried to start defender but got this message "Windows could not start the Windows Defender on local computer. ERROR:577 Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged or that might be malicious software from unknown source." I have tried to uninstall defender but I am afraid to try this. Windows firewall is working only the defender that keeps the malicious software from being put on this computer will not start. I…

by Guest TammieYZ- 0 replies

I just completed a MS safety scan. The malware was PWS:Win32/Zbot.gen!AP The scan results say partially removed, manual steps required. When I click on the name of the virus, I am sent to MS malware protection center. But I don't see any where on that page how to manually remove this virus. It just shows 3 softwares that detect & remove this threat: Microsoft Security Essentials (which I have been using), Microsoft safety scanner (which I just used & gave me the above info) and Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Do I use the malicious software removal tool? Continue reading...

Yeah.. another scam ?
by Guest Curious16_377- 0 replies

So yesterday just before I was heading out, the phone rang and my mum handed it over to me as when she spoke, the caller said he was calling from Microsoft and wanted to speak to the main user of the PC/Laptop. Before handing over the phone to me: my mum did warn me not to give out any credit/ debit card details of my fathers (I'm 16) from Paypal or just his credit card alone as: since we first purchased the laptop, monthly payments are taken for security and if any 'problems/virus' did occur then we would be approached some other way and another payment wouldn't have to be made. Anyway moving on, I spoke to the person on the phone (he had a very strong Indian accent…

Problems with MS security essentials, firewall & update
by Guest TammieYZ- 0 replies
I am using Windows Vista Home premium 32 bit. I use MS security essentials for my anti-virus. I started a full scan last night. This morning the essentials box said there was 1 threat found on my computer. I needed to restart the computer to clean it. I did, but got the same message again when everything loaded up. I have restarted it multiple time. On a couple of those occasions, a MS security essentials sample submission box comes up with one or two file paths to send to MS. I have tried to send them & also cancel, but still can't get my computer to stay in protected status. I have also found that my firewall & windows updater are disabled. I am not ab…

GhostBSD, anyone using it?
by Guest TNFrank- 0 replies

Saw a new BSD Distro on Distro Watch called GhostBSD. I can download it with a MATE or Xfce Desktop(probably go Xfce) and just wonder how hard it would be to install and run? I've been messing around with Linux based Distros for over a year now and would like to give a BSD Distro a try if for no other reason the fun of it. Anything special I need to do to install it on my HP/Compaq NC6400? Will it have drivers and stuff for my bluetooth and wifi out of the box? What is the package manager like? I'm use to apt-get and pacman, never did anything with BSD so it'd be totally new territory for me. Thanks for any info or help you can give. Continue reading...

The Guardian gets a major update with new UI and notifications
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies

The Guardian has introduced a big update to their mobile app today which revamps the user interface, adds in some extra notifications, and a few more bells and whistles. Of course there's a full commenting system for articles, but users can also submit their own photos from around the world to share for contests and other themed stories. If you don't have time to read something, stories can be cached for offline reading later. You can shuffle around the sections so the most important and interesting stuff shows up first on your home page. This is a great evolution of print, and seems to embrace the accessibility and interaction that modern readers are really looking …

iOS 8 wish-list: What we'd love to see at WWDC 2014!
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
The WWDC 2014 opening keynote is only a few short days away and that means, if Apple sticks to pattern, we should see the first preview of iOS 8. Since the big redesign was already done last year, that should mean polish and rounding out the feature set is what we get this year. Granted, getting OS X 10.10's big update out the door might mean some iOS 8 features become iOS 8.1 or even iOS 9 features. That can always happen. However, outside the walls of Cupertino we here have the luxury of just wishing for stuff. Just wanting it. And that's what this is — a list of some of the things, big, small, and in-between we'd love to see in iOS 8. Free iCloud backup storage for …

Was Apple's Beats acquisition really a 'no brainer'?
by Guest Chris Umiastowski- 0 replies
Last night the Apple news we've all been wondering about finally became official: Apple bought Beats The company now run by Tim Cook reached into its wallet and pulled out $2.6 billion big ones (plus another $400 million in stock that vests later on) to acquire Beats Electronics, Beats Audio and of course the incredible talent behind the company. This includes Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, who both become Apple executives. When a giant company like Apple buys a smaller company like Beats there are important things to consider that are not obvious to those who confine their thinking to a box. Apple has deal-making power that almost no other company has in the technology wor…

Five minutes after logging off and shutdown of my PC I T turned on the PC again and tried to log on again. The logon was taking an unusually long to complete. Suddenly two dialog boxes openned. Do You want to activate Windows now? The timer expired and the PC shut down and restarted. I tried to log on again and the Windows Product Activation dialog box popped up. This has never happened before! What could have changed that caused this? csf. Continue reading...
