Multiple BSOD
by Guest thelonghop- 0 replies
I believe all of my drivers are current. I've reset BIOS to recommended settings. I ran one pass on memtest with no errors. I've run virus scans. I'm not sure if it's related, but I think I may have had/have a memory leak related to svchost.exe LOCAL SERVICE EventSystem COM + Event System. The other day this Process was using 4GB of RAM, and now I'm getting all these BSODs. I could be wrong on which svchost it was. Here's a link to the Minidump files over the past couple days, BlueScreenView grid and DM Log output. https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=DC68073085159E60%21142 Continue reading...

I was looking for problems that might be causing small changes in some of my programs when I ran into this: under tools or edit when on my ISPs' home page under the subcategory send to were two( what I thought were )urls. I managed to scribble one down as-- http//Google leads.G.double click.net/page,and then they both disappeared not to be seen since. Does anyone know what this might have been and if it could damage Vista Home Premium 64bit system? I hope I was not just imagining this. [Original Title: Adware] Continue reading...

Fraudulent Call - Threat to Cancel Registered License ID
by Guest Jujujulie- 0 replies
I've had a recent call and, because I am not computer savvy, it has scared me as past calls have been able to do. I was threatened with having my registered license ID on my computer cancelled which I was told would make the computer unusable and would follow me to any subsequent computer which would also make it inoperative. The pressure tactics are very effective when you don't have the knowledge to act appropriately... We did the following (removing parts already covered here): Hit ctrl + windows keys, then entered outlook/safe(couldn’t find same screen again, did restart in normal status from DOS mode) Black box like DOS appeared with ...juliecar…

Video Player

All, As serious programmer, not much interested in the "play" most engage in, so audio, video, gaming has not been used by yours truly, but recently discovered a show "Alaskan Bush People" from Discovery that I want to watch. I found the show on a torrent link site and downloaded the 4 existing releases of the show, but when running it through the default video/movie player "Dragon Player" only got "freeze frame" display, though audio was fine. Reached out to a friend of mine that views movies all the time on his Ubuntu box (he runs U 12.04 LTS Gnome and I run Kubuntu 12.04 LTS). He told me to install "smplayer" so I ran the apt-get installs needed and now get th…

My wife's workplace is still using XP Pro.
by Guest TNFrank- 0 replies

Had to run in to work with my wife last night so she could check to make sure she'd posted something, she works in the billing section of a Hospital. Anyway, just out of curiosity I gave a look to which Op System they're running and it was Windows XP Pro which as ya'll know was End of Life in April of this year. I can't believe that they're still running XP when God Knows how many ODays will come up with it that won't be patched. This will put patient billing records in jeopardy to hackers. Don't know what they're IT Dept. is thinking but if I were in charge we'd be using GNU/Health. Oh, and YES they ARE connected to the interweb so they can get e-mail and stuff so it's …

Katie Cotton, longtime head of Apple's public relations (PR) team under both the late Steve Jobs and now Tim Cook is has now completed her time at Apple with today being here last day at the company. It was announced back at the beginning of May that Cotton was set to retire and at the time, both Apple and Cotton commented on the matter to Re/Code: "Katie has given her all to this company for over 18 years," Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said in a statement. "She has wanted to spend time with her children for some time now. We are really going to miss her." WWDC 2014 banners suggest the name OS X Yosemite
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Those WWDC 2014 banners keep going up and the latest looks a lot like El Capitan in Yosemite. Does that mean we'll be seeing OS X 10.10 Yosemite come Monday? With Apple nothing is certain until it's certain, but it's certainly a California landmark and a fitting choice of name for the next generation in Mac operating systems. Last year was the first of the new naming convention, which replaced the big cats and OS X Mountain Lion with California locations and OS X Mavericks. OS X 10.10, currently codenamed Syrah, is supposed to be getting a lot of attention this year, including a redesign and perhaps some major work on developer-facing APIs. Yosemite is certainly a bi…

Inky Mail for iPhone and iPad review: A unique approach to tackling mail
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
Inky Mail is a new alternative mail app for both iPhone and iPad that can help you quickly triage and get your inboxes under control. Even though Inky is new to iOS, it's been available on the Mac for quite some time. I even named it one of the best alternative Mac mail apps currently available. The thing that makes Inky so unique is not only how it sorts your mail, but how it can sort what messages are actually relevant and important to you. The first thing you'll notice when you launch Inky on either Mac or iOS are the Smart Views. These are areas that you can use to collect different kinds of messages. The most significant of these views is the filtered inbox. Thi…
