Lightweight, secure and functional
by Guest situbu- 0 replies

New to Linux. I just put a machine together out of parts I had available and figured it is time to get familiar with Linux. Possible uses for this box are: 1. A hard drive station, for virus checking, imaging, etc. 2. A Plex media streamer (no transcoding) The specs are: 1. 8KNXP Gigabyte motherboard 2. Athlon 64 3500+ (2.2ghz single core) 3. 2 GB DDR RAM 4. sata1 HD As you can see, these are not modern componenets. Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit runs very sluggish. Unusably so. Ubuntu 10.10 runs fine, but is no longer supported. So 2 questions, really. 1. How secure would 10.10 be given that, if used as a streamer, it will be connected to the network &…

iOS 8 Beta available to developers today
by Guest Andrew Martonik- 0 replies
While everyone is still wrapping their heads around an amazing set of announcements for iOS 8, developers will be able to get their eyes and hands on the beta release of the software starting today. Though they will of course be restricted in what they can show and tell outside of a development setting, getting developers early access to iOS 8 means they can start building new apps and optimizing old ones to be in tip-top shape when the bits land on consumer devices later in the year. When iOS finally makes its way out to end consumers this fall, it'll be available on the following devices: iPhone 4s, 5, 5c, 5s iPod Touch 5th generation iPad 2, 3, Air, mini, Re…

Metal helps game developers get the most out of iOS hardware
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple has announced Metal, a way to help game developers get the most power out of iPhone hardware in iOS 8. Metal reduces OpenGL overhead and is described by Apple as "near bare-to-the-metal" of the Apple A7 chip. Metal allows 10x faster draw cell rates, and allows developers to draw computing power from a device's GPU. There is also support for efficient multithreading, up to 1.3 million polygons, depth of field effects, and more. EA promises console-quality effects in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Metal was demonstrated by Tim Sweeny from Epic Games, with a demo called Zen Garden, which will be available for free when iOS 8 launches in the fall. Keep i…

iOS 8 adds third-party access to camera data via an API
by Guest Andrew Martonik- 0 replies
Apple is adding over 4000 new APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) to iOS 8, and one with user-facing implications is a new camera API. The latest camera API will give third-party apps access to deeper hardware control of the camera, meaning you can install an app from the App Store that can handle manual control of exposure, white balance and more, as well as make non-destructive edits to photos that you've already taken. It will take some time for apps to get integrated with the new APIs, and of course for iOS 8 to be released to the public, but once the new software is available this could be a huge step forward in photography on the iPhone. …

HomeKit lets your iPhone phone home
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies
Apple introduced HomeKit at WWDC to allow your iPhone and iPad to control your connected home. The current state of connected homes today is that each component requires a separate app and not everything is integrated to make it simple and easy. With HomeKit, Apple is hoping to change that as it is partnering with leading vendors of home automation equipment including Schlage, Honeywell, Kwikset, iDevices, and others. Essentially, HomeKit creates a unified interface where you can control all aspects of your home. Rather than have a separate app to control your lighting and another one to control your garage door, now all aspects of your home can connect to your iPhon…

Touch ID authentication coming to third-party apps
by Guest Alex Dobie- 0 replies
As part of its raft of new APIs for developers, Apple today introduced new APIs for its fingerprint-based Touch ID system at WWDC. And the big news is that third-party apps will finally be able to use Touch ID authentication in iOS 8. According to today's presentation, the system protects logins and user data, and works with iOS's existing keychain setup. And as ever, biometric data from your fingerprints is kept securely silo'd away on the device. Continue reading...

Outlook Express failure
by Guest KenH_993- 0 replies

I apologize if I am in the wrong category, but there isn't one for Outlook Express. I've run into a strange problem with OE. My client is still using OE for their email, and one person suddenly lost the ability to receive emails. After some digging, I found that their inbox.dbx folder was over the 2 gig capacity. Fiddling with that fixed the problem. But, my question is why was the inbox folder full when there were no messages showing in the folder? When I opened OE to try and fix the issue, the inbox was empty! Second question is how do I keep this from happening again? [Moved from Internet Explorer] Continue reading...

Games suddenly lagging on my laptop
by Guest Taonga Kalyepe- 0 replies

I have an Acer Laptop, windows 8 (Recently upgraded to 8.1). Since I got the laptop, most games have played very well, regardless of their requirements and all that. But about 3 days ago when I tried to play Call of Duty: Black Ops, a game that I've played and finished twice, suddenly lagged like nobody's business!! I got somewhere around 5 fps. And I noticed this happened for every other game, except for Battlefield 3. I looked through my laptop and noticed that the games now use up pretty much all my RAM, so I'm guessing that's the problem. I even did that “Reinstall windows but keep your files” option, and it downgraded back to windows 8, but the problem st…

This laptop has additional button for enabling and disabling the wireless connections (Bluetooth & Wi-Fi) . Since last few days my Wi-Fi enabling and disabling option on the Computer settings has been disabled and I can't even press on it. I've tried device manager settings but no help. Then tried to put it on Airplane mode then again switch it off to see whether Wi-Fi setting is enabled or not but unfortunately still showing disabled. Though Bluetooth option is perfectly working. Rights management problem
by Guest LornaGayle- 0 replies
I recently upgraded to Win7 from XP and am trying to sort out some hiccups. One of these is a wordpad file I created yesterday and saved but now that I try to open it I get a dialog box saying that "This document is either corrupt or protected under Rights Management." and therefore cannot be opened.I do't know if this is part of the problem I'm having with the folder (and others) in which it was saved where a little lock icon appears on the folder and limits or denies my access. I have tried altering the permissions vainly. I'm bewildered as to how I am denied access to files I created. Thanks Continue reading...

I built my own computer a few months ago and installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and decided to go buy a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 since my old keyboard was going on the fritz and my System was plaguing me with random freezing where everything froze and the HDD Light would stay solid and when I would attempt to boot my computer up it would always shut off at the starting windows logo and the only way to get into windows was to run windows start-up repair ( the utility NEVER found any problems) but it had to finish and once it reset my computer would start up fine. When I go to power down my computer a screen would appear saying windows is waiting for program…

If you have multiple print jobs saved, and you select multiple items, and view the properties, the tabs show in a different language and sometimes Explorer.exe crashes. Here are the steps with screenshots: Open a printer queue that has multiple saved print jobs: Select multiple entries: Right-Click an entry and select "Properties." The properties sheet for each item opens, but notice in the following screenshots the tab names: Is this a Windows bug or a HP driver bug? Continue reading...

by Guest Bruce_84- 0 replies

Hi all, Basically, several months ago, I noticed something strange on my computer - I know I should have acted immediately - my Task Manager was "disabled by [my] administrator". Yet, I am the administrator!?! Secondly, I switched on my system yesterday and was immediately greeted with a pale-blue screen with lots of white writing, which said, "We strongly recommend you do not press 'ENTER'.......???? If you do, and wish to progress before the time expires........???????" However, by the time I had attempted to skim through what was before me (as I was unable to catch it all), a 10 second time limit had expired and lots more white text/numbers/symbols suddenly s…

Cryptolocker

Color me confused. How can such extortion exist without anything meaningful be done? Like others my files are locked by this vicious extortion and I will have to take months to rebuild half of what I had on my machine and yes they were my files. I suspect that a major collusion exists between the players and spreaders of this offense and yet apparently nothing is being done to hunt the people down behind this extortion. It is incredible to me that a company of the scope and size and influence of MS could let this type of abuse exist. I am planning on purchasing a MAC book as a result and trashing all this MS software as I am sick of dealing with such a mess... …
