by Guest Richard Devine- 0 replies

Volvo announced the new XC90 a short time ago and today is back with yet more details on its interior workings, and it's good news on the CarPlay front. Alongside built in technology from HERE, Volvo has confirmed – as expected – that Apple CarPlay support will be included. From the official press release: The XC90 also becomes the first Volvo car to offer Apple CarPlay, which brings selected features and services familiar to iPad, iPhone and iPod users directly into the car via the large centre console touch screen display. Users will immediately recognise the well-known icons for their basic Apple applications, such as phone, messages, music and navigation. "Ap…

Assistive tech and fitness: We're not quite there yet
by Guest Jerry Hildenbrand- 0 replies

There's a major niche for fitness products that is mostly untapped — for now As you will see during Fitness Month here on Mobile Nations, there is a wide array of cool and connected gadgets to help you get fit or stay fit. Bracelets, bands and clips that communicate with smartphones to tell you how far you've walked, how fast you did it, and how healthy it makes you come from plenty of manufacturers. They even get social and make for great games and contests. It's really cool to see how far this area has come in such a short time, and it's pretty great to see how well it's been accepted by tech enthusiasts and those who aren't quite as enthused about circuits as we mig…

Intel's newly announced Core M processors will pave the way for thinner MacBooks
by Guest Rich Edmonds- 0 replies

Intel today announced a new family of Core M "Broadwell" processors that will help make hardware even thinner. The MacBook Air is already pretty darn thin — the thinnest Mac available, in fact — but the design hasn't seen a substantial update since 2010. That's a long time, long enough for Apple's Windows-based competitors to develop so-called ultrabooks that are able to compete handily on specs, portability, and battery life. The MacBook Air has improved a lot since the 2010 redesign, yes, but we've been looking forward to the release of Broadwell, which has promised to cut down on unnecessary space taken up by cooling solutions without compromising on power and the next…

!!!BEWARE OF A PALE-BLUE SCREEN (WHEN STARTING UP YOUR SYSTEM) WITH A LONG QUESTION; ONE ONLY...
by Guest Bruce_84- 0 replies

Hi all, Basically, several months ago, I noticed something strange on my computer - I know I should have acted immediately - my Task Manager was "disabled by [my] administrator". Yet, I am the administrator!?! Secondly, I switched on my system yesterday and was immediately greeted with a pale-blue screen with lots of white writing, which said, "We strongly recommend you do not press 'ENTER'.......???? If you do, and wish to progress before the time expires........???????" However, by the time I had attempted to skim through what was before me (as I was unable to catch it all), a 10 second time limit had expired and lots more white text/numbers/symbols suddenly s…

Why is my defragment option no longer available on Windows XP?!?
by Guest Bruce_84- 0 replies
Hi all, Basically, I was defragging my hard drive (C:) several days ago and the electricity supply was suddenly cut off half way though. Since then, I have repeatedly tried to use the application and I keep receiving a message saying: MMC cannot open the file. This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file. Firstly, I AM the administrator for my computer. Second, I have tried a suggested method via: a) Clicking START and then RUN; b) Typing C:\Windows\Inf and clicking OK; c) Right-clickin…

Installing Older Version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005
by Guest PeterD12345- 0 replies

I am getting SideBySide errors in the event Log when running an older version of Office. Here is one of the errors: Resolve Partial Assembly failed for Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC. Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your system. I have researched the errors and i believe the solution is to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005. I am concerned that i already have 2008 and 2010 installed on my system and installing the older version may conflict with these versions. Is it safe to install the older version? I would appreciate any help. Thank you. Continue reading...

Windows 8 Start Tiles Not Working/Cannot Update to 8.1
by Guest Amez88- 0 replies

I've had issues with my start tiles for months now, but ignored them because I hate the Windows 8 start menu and didn't think it was important. Any attempts to download the update for 8.1 have failed as they all seem to require a download via the store app, which obviously isn't working. I'd appreciate a hand if anyone thinks they know what the problem is? Things I've tried Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter - Doesn't find anything and states it could be a device issue Device Troubleshooter - Finds issue with network adapter -> Cannot fix, reinstall unsuccesful Trying It Under Different User - Cannot create another user due to error Check Resolutio…

System Crashes When Playing Downloaded Games
by Guest Satincat- 0 replies
I am using a Dell Inspiron 565 S Desktop. It is about 4 years old, and is running the manufacturer installed Windows 7. It had an issue about a year ago where it had to go in for service to have a virus removed. It has been running fine since then, however, I get the "Choose Windows 7" message at start-up each time. It has developed a problem in the last few moths with certain games that are downloaded from sites such as Shockwave or MSN Zone. The game will play fine for about 15-20 minutes, and then the entire system crashes (meaning I have to shutdown and reboot). It only does this on certain games. Any idea what the problem migh be? Does it sound llike a hardware or so…

Display drivers constantly crashing, frequent x116 BSOD
by Guest Nasric- 0 replies
I recently purchased a MSi Radeon R7 265, OC edition. It was working fine until Saturday, when I was playing a game and then the screen went black and gave me a BSOD, then proceeded to automatically restart. Now, whenever I attempt to launch a large majority of my programs and applications, including any and all games, my screen freezes and then goes completely black, then returns to normal with a notification that my display drivers have stopped responding and restarted successfully. Sometimes it'll even give me a BSOD with the x116 error, attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed. It cites atikmpag.sys as the offending file. I honestly do…

Windows 7 won't download updates - "Windows could not check for updates automatically"
by Guest railrider 72- 0 replies

Original title: Windows 7 won't download updates. I have a Windows 7 Starter Edition netbook, Acer brand. It keeps saying that Windows could not check for updates automatically (Important), I bring up the Windows Update program and tell it to check for updates. After about 10 minutes, it simply says I need to check for updates. No error messages, no information, nothing more than that. It's been doing this since March 7, 2014. I have tried the Fix It tool, and even used the Microsoft Advanced Diagnostic and Repair tool. Neither have any affect on it, and the AD tool just says that I still have a problem; again, no further information is given. I have Nort…

Need to uninstall Oracle Java 1.7 and restore Apple Java 1.6
by Guest bowjest- 0 replies
I recently installed Oracle Java 1.7 to test a newer version of some software I use for work (we'll call it app A). I wasn't impressed and am now finding that it causes a major conflict with another tool I need for my job (we'll call it app B). Basically, since 1.7 is now the system default, it is what is invoked when I try to launch app B, but app B won't work with 1.7, so it freaks out and I can't use it. I've initially gotten around this by creating a launch script that contains the following: export JAVA_HOME=`/usr/libexec/java_home -v1.6`; java -jar /Applications/App_B.app/Contents/Resources/Java/Start.jar Great. Works. The problem is, I have a number of …

How does "audit" get turned on?
by Guest Whitehill- 0 replies
This morning I found an alert from SuperDuper! that last night's backup had failed. The logs didn't reveal much info, so I ran it again manually - and it failed again in exactly the same way. Comparing logs, both backups died trying to copy the same file from /var/audit/. I deleted the offending file, reran the backup, and it completed normally. After some poking around the internet, the impression I get is that auditing is not on by default - something has to turn it on, typically when something is installed or updated with administrator authorization. The oldest file in /var/audit/ is dated 5/28. From then to now, I have installed Etrecheck and updated Parallels Desk…
