Hi, I have the following set-up: SSD 64GB HDD1 1TB HDD2 3TB Ram 16GB I've decided to use GPT for all along with UEFI and dual boot Windows 7 64 bit on the HDD. Since i want Linux as my main system i've was thinking of the following split: #ssd /boot 300-500 mb / 20GB /var 15GB #not sure if it's the right place for var but i think the SSD will survive /home rest of the ssd #Probably Ext4 for all tho i don't why some choose ext3 for boot, do i need a COW FS? #No need for swap as far as i can see #Not sure but do i need to have /usr in a separate partition? #hdd1 C:\ NTFS 200-300GB D:\ (/data on linux) NTFS rest of the HDD to be shared as Downloads etc.…

I am new to slackware (again)... and I am wondering why do I have to enter startx at a prompt to bring up the gui side of slackware? I checked out the inittab file and things are set on multiuser number 3. So I thought that would get things to boot up into graphics mode. Not so. What is the solution?? I am using 14.1 distribution. Hi guys! Small question here. How can I set up the resources a computer will use for a simulation? I'm running a simulation with a CFD code from terminal. Is there any simple newbie-friendly way to tell the PC "Hey, this simulation is going o take like a few hours or more, can you please use all the available resources you can to make it run as faster as possible? Feel free to forget about internet, user stuff, other programs, dropbox updating, and so on.." I knwo that the way to go is having a specialiced minimal OS.... I'm using linux Mint peta distro. Earlier this week rumors surfaced that Nuance Communications is up for sale. Apple is reportedly a huge customer of Nuance, using the firm's voice recognition software to help power Siri. So, if Nuance really is up for sale, should Apple be the ones who close the deal? When voice services first started showing up a lot of people questioned their value. People considered them to be gimmicks. But I think people have largely started to accept the value that voice recognition brings to the table. It's quite handy to just ask your phone to tell you the weather forecast, or call home, or even send a brief email or text message when driving. It would be almost pointless (at l…

Sicher, a new "super-safe" messenger has arrived today on Windows Phone, iPhone and Android devices. Sicher (pronounced "Zee-her") comes from the team behind IM+ and brings free, encrypted chats and file transfers to users. Using the app, you'll be able to chat, send files, photos and voice messages to other users. Sicher goes so far as to not show incoming messages on your lock screen (only an alert) so you have to open the app to get the full message. Sicher features secure end-to-end encryption of messages, files and group chats, anonymous push notifications and self-destruction message settings. Only your peer, the holder of original private key, can decrypt the…

Apple has cut the price of the Apple TV in the UK and Europe. In the UK, the device is now available for £79, down from £99. In continental Europe, the price has dropped from €109 to €99. That's a cut of about 20% in the UK, and about 9% in continental Europe. The Apple TV is an increasingly important product for Apple, one that now generates over a billion dollars per year. This price cut will undoubtedly put the device, once thought of as a 'hobby' for Apple in more hands than ever. There has been no word on a price cut in other parts of the world. Will you be purchasing an Apple TV at these lower prices? Let us know below in the comments. Source: CNET …

Apple has released a new model of their iMac desktop computer at a lower price point. The new model is part of the 21.5-inch lineup and starts at $1,099. For that price, customers get a 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with an Intel HD Graphics 5000 graphics chip, 8GB of memory, and a 500GB hard drive. The storage can be swapped for either a 1TB hard drive, 1TB Fusion Drive, or a 256GB solid state drive. This new iMac has similar specs to the base models of the MacBook Air The i5 processor in this new, low-end iMac is similar to if not the same as the processor found in the base models of both the 11 and 13-inch Airs, with the same graphics chip. PC REG kept popping up with a message that I have hundreds of critical problems that need to be addressed to immediately. Finally, I gave in. I ordered the cleaner, gave my account numbers, and in response, the email claimed the money did not go through. That was a blatant lie; they took my money and gave me nothing for it. When I got in touch with their customer service, I explained I wanted to talk to a manager and receive a refund. He gave me this website to go on that has given me all of these different options. I have yet to reach them! Continue reading...

Microsoft barges onto my computer once in a while to offer me an upgrade to 8.1. Having read reviews I do not believe it is a useful upgrade for me and I don't want to spend days re-installing 3rd party software. I always reject the offer. But once in a while my computer freezes as soon as the offer appears. I have the little spinning WAIT circle spinning and I can do nothing else on the computer. There seems to be no way to make it go away short of rebooting or logging out. Is there a way to prevent this from getting this offer in the first place or an easy way to undo this freeze? So I've been having problems with the right side of my computer. It has two USB ports and the CD/DVD drive. At first when I plugged USBs in and it didn't work, I thought maybe the port is messed up. Then I put a CD into my computer and the green light flashed and it made that noise it makes when I put a CD in but the AutoPlay thing didn't pop up. So I went to device manager and there is no section that says CD/DVD. I troubleshooted my computer but it still doesn't work. It's getting really frustrating! Continue reading...
