Here's the announcement. https://www.openssl.org/news/secadv_20140605.txt The short version is that you should upgrade the openssl package on your servers to avoid the vulnerability. Ubuntu has already released a new version of the openssl so "apt-get install" will find the patched version. You can find link to info about the patch for your variant here. UbuntuUpdates - Bugs I'm sure other OS vendors will soon if they haven't already. Continue reading...

Best FREE way to maintain MySQL backups?
by Guest nfurlan- 0 replies

As far as Linux web server emergency plans are concerned, I know that two things are crucial: Keeping backups of website source code (we are currently using Git) Keeping backups of MySQL databases (?) What is the best free way to keep backups of MySQL databases? (This is all for a non-profit, and we're trying to keep the costs to a minimum - hopefully at FREE - if possible.) Continue reading...

How to quickly change or move a calendar event on iPhone and iPad
by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
If you need to quickly change the time of an event or appointment in your iPhone or iPad's Calendar, the today view gives you an incredibly easy way of doing so by dragging and dropping instead of entering into edit mode for each event you need to change. Unfortunately, the Calendar app doesn't make the option very obvious. But once you know where it's at, we're pretty sure you'll prefer it over editing individual events when it comes time to plan your day. How to move a calendar event or appointment on iPhone or iPad by dragging and dropping Launch the Calendar app on your iPhone or iPad. Toggle list view off at the top if it isn't already. Tap on the day you ne…

Tinder adds Snapchat-style self-destructing picture sharing
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
The massively popular Tinder dating app has added Snapchat-style self-destructing image sharing between users. In addition to swiping Yay or Nay on eligible local bachelors and bachelorettes, you can now blast out pictures to those you've successfully been matched with. The catch is pictures go out to all matches you've made and the shot deletes itself after 24 hours. Those on the receiving end can like or pass on pictures just like they do user profiles, or leave a comment as a reply. These "Moments" have some light filtering and editing capabilities, such as text and marking up, though you can just share pictures as shot. Unfortunately, you can't add them from the …

Tech leaders unite on government data collection reform
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies
After uniting over issues with net neutrality, tech leaders are once again coming together to protect the consumers. In an open letter penned to the United States government, AOL, Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter, and Yahoo are pleading with elected officials to put an end to data collection on the Internet in the age of Edward Snowden and the NSA. The timely letter is written ahead of a Senate vote. The U.S. Senate will decide if it wants to pass a version of the USA Freedom Act in the next few weeks that would help to keep the Internet safe and secure. A version of the bill had recently passed in the House, but that version, accordi…

Phillips Hue notification center widget already in the works for iOS 8
by Guest Adam Zeis- 0 replies
Earlier this week Apple announced plenty of new and awesome features coming to iOS 8 later this year — among them were HomeKit and new notification center widgets. HomeKit looks to unify all of your connected things from big brands like Schalge, Chamberlain and Phillips. You'll no longer need to use each device's app individual, rather you can control multiple supported devices with HomeKit instead. Couple HomeKit with notification center widgets and you will have some very cool tools, like the one shown off today by @phillipshuedev. This is a concept prototype to show the use of extensions to provide access to hue from the notification centre! pic.twitter.com/xC92L…

Why was the inbox folder full when there were no messages showing in the folder in outlook...
by Guest KenH_993- 0 replies

Original title: Outlook Express failure I apologize if I am in the wrong category, but there isn't one for Outlook Express. I've run into a strange problem with OE. My client is still using OE for their email, and one person suddenly lost the ability to receive emails. After some digging, I found that their inbox.dbx folder was over the 2 gig capacity. Fiddling with that fixed the problem. But, my question is why was the inbox folder full when there were no messages showing in the folder? When I opened OE to try and fix the issue, the inbox was empty! Second question is how do I keep this from happening again? [Moved from Internet Explorer] Continue read…

Forced to purchase windows 8 and apps don't open including store app
by Guest mad customer_123- 0 replies

Okay Microsoft, this is just ridiculous. I searched web for solution, and I still don't have a satisfactory answer. There are tons of people having this problem, and there is not an acceptable solution on any thread I have seen (and I've read through a great deal of them). Someone who knows what they are doing needs to get their act together and help out. This is a system breaking issue, and makes the upgrade to windows 8 at best useless and at worst incredibly detrimental. Companies should not be able to get away with this kind of terrible service. HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT80N Problem Please help!!!
by Guest LoriCrothers- 0 replies

Hi all, I am having a problem with my dvd drive. It will not auto run. A lot of the time when I go into windows explorer it does not even show I have a dvd in. When it finally does show a dvd in, I have to manually open it in my cyberlink powerdvd 10. Then after a bit, it locks up and has to close. Also if I try to do a scene selection it locks up. Rarely will it play a movie all the way through without issues. I ran a hardware diagnostic and it always says the hardware is working properly. It does the same in windows medial player so it is not the cyberlink software. Has to be the hardware or a problem in the registry or software. I also tried the "Fix It" here…

Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 upgrade question.
by Guest Pearlpalkia1- 0 replies
Hi. I was only informed today that if I don't upgrade to windows 8.1 by the end of June 13th, I'll no longer receive updates. However I don't really trust the sources I was given, so I thought I'll ask the community and microsoft directly through this thread. On this news page http://www.deccanchronicle.com/140605/technology-latest/article/upgrade-windows-81-one-week-deadline. It states that if I don't upgrade to windows 8.1, I'll no longer receive updates, but when I look at other news pages with the "Windows 8.1 deadline", it only mentions Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 RT, and Windows Server R2(?) Devices, this has confused me. So my question is this. …

Can Malware damage to the files existing on the host?
by Guest Aria Abbasi- 0 replies

Hello guys, I'm somewhat aware of Malware and their actions. And also know how to get rid of them and clean the machine. And about the Malware, we all know that Malware can spread in the form of a Worm or a Virus. Viruses are Malware that require some form of user interaction to infect the user's device. On the other hand, Worms are Malware that can enter a device without any explicit user interaction. OK, my question: Can Malware damage to our files? For example consider I have various kinds of files, from a simple .MP3 file until .iso, .xlsx, .exe or programming files and etc. Can those Malware damage those files so that they aren't usable or repairable? …
