Hello, Unfortunately, I am here today having to ask for some help with wifi performance. Here's the thing; in my university residence, they've removed our wired internet in favour of wireless. We used to have ~10MBps down speeds, but now I'm lucky when I get 300KBps down. Over this summer term (May - August), there thankfully is maybe a quarter of the amount of people that typically live in residence (which is ~800); however, their wifi system cannot handle the traffic as it is it seems. Thing is, they just put in the wifi last October, so the system is still new, all these fancy Cisco wifi APs on every floor (at least two per floor). Thing is, I have a couple probl…

I'm casting off the lines tomorrow for a three week sail. The wife and I will spend a few days in B.C.'s Gulf Islands then head up to Cortez Island and across to Desolation Sound before heading home. Linux will accompany us on our navigation computer - Lubuntu using PolarView. I'd like to use OpenCPN but the charts I'm using aren't compatible with it. Fair winds. Continue reading...

How about starting a yearly internet meme thread? I realize some might consider that as part of the jokes thread, but in looking at that thread, it's clear that there is a definite distinction between jokes and memes, despite both being considered humor. Just a thought. This search here revealed that this hasn't been suggested before. Continue reading...

I was watching an older show on Hak5 on my Roku and saw them talk about Linux Live USB Creator so I looked it up but saw that it only runs under Windows, so what gives? Seems like this would be awesome to make up Live and persistent USB sticks with a good Linux Distro on it so you could take it along with you and have a "computer in your pocket" but why no support from this tool for Linux? Seems like Linux would have been the first thing they'd have gotten it to work under, not Windows. Continue reading...

T-Mobile CEO John Legere has given an update on the carrier's recent Un-carrier 5.0 and Un-carrier 6.0 announcements. Un-carrier 5.0 was the announcement of T-Mobile Test Drive, which lets people try T-Mobile's network for free. Un-carrier 6.0 was Music Freedom, which lets customers use several music services without that data usage counting against their high-speed data limit. Legere announced that over 12,000 people have pre-registered for Test Drive. The program lets potential T-Mobile customers try the network using an iPhone 5S for a week for free without any obligation. You can pre-register for Test Drive now, or wait to register on Monday, June 23, when the se…

Apple is reportedly planning to launch multiple sizes of the iWatch, with several sensors to track health and fitness. Subway Surfers has enjoyed a steady stream of updates with new content patches and today we're looking at the addition of São Paulo, Brazil to celebrate the this year's World Cup. In the latest version of Subway Surfers, developer Kiloo has made it possible for players to traverse through São Paulo as Edison, the Brazilian soccer kid and latest member of the Subway Surfers crew. As well as the new area and character, Kiloo has also added in the Banana board and cool new outfits for Edison and Zoe. Yo! Remember the hit new app that managed $1 million in funding we covered yesterday, which enables smartphone owners to send "Yo" alerts to contacts? The service has been hacked by a student and two roommates. Yo has confirmed they're investigating the hack and expect to have the security vulnerability patched in the "next few hours". The hackers have been able to access any Yo user's mobile number with the ability spam any user with multiple Yo messages. The hackers opted not to spam users of the Yo service, but (if the apps weren't already pointless enough) users have reported to receiving a Yo through the app which played a snippet of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna G…

Hi so I just recently bought a new computer and out of no where it has been running into some really annoying errors. This has happened three times, I can't figure out a reason yet, as far as I know it occurs randomly. Some times I will boot up my computer and it will just go to the windows icon, the loading circle will not appear. If I leave it running it still will remain frozen. After a few restarts it says "preparing automatic repair" yet is still frozen. This has happened 3 times. The first time I popped in the recovery CD no problem, used a system restore, it was all good. The second time it actually had a cause, our power went out and my pc was in use, so p…

I have a hp pavilion 23 with windows 8 and it will power on but not go to the start screen. It try's to repair itself but cannot. It gives me the options of restarting the computer or advanced options. If you restart the computer it just begins trying to repair itself but still cannot. The only thing I can think of is it has a bad driver or something because it comes up with a code that has a meaning for driver C. However I do not know how to fix this and it will not reset back to factory settings or repair itself, there is something that's preventing it. It tries to repair and fails over and over again. As of now the computer is completely uses less because I can …

Hello, I have brought a Internet Security and I had an update for it today. I did the update then it asked me to restart my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Compaq Presario CQ56 laptop, and now there is this program called AVG Watchdog is doing something on it and it is blocking me from starting in any Safe Mode or Restore. All it does it does the Windows Start screen, then goes into this black screen that says "watchdog initializing" and it goes through 3 phrases then it says "Exiting" and restarts, it does the exact same thing again...over and over and over again. I have tried to restore it, but no programs will not load. I love Windows 7 and I have a Windows…

My laptop is telling me I need to back up. I've done it before onto CDs. I have since moved cities and don't have the discs I used last time. I now want to use a hard drive. The computer tells me to insert a USB but when I do it asks it for a CD into the E: drive. Can I change it to an F: drive and back it up on to a hard drive I've just bought? I use windows 7 in case that's important (I got the hard drive thinking I'd just plug it in and follow the prompts but it didn't quite work out that way). Continue reading...
