As security professionals, we are trained to think in worst-case scenarios. We run through the land of the theoretical, chasing “what if” scenarios as though they are lightning bugs to be gathered and stashed in a glass jar. Most of time, this type of thinking is absolutely the correct thing for security professionals to do.

Hi, First, please be patient. I have not used a form like this before. I have an Acer One Netbook. It came with Win XP OS installed. It is authorized OS and I registered it with Microsoft. The computer worked great for a couple of years. It abruptly stopped working. After testing I installed a new motherboard with Intel CPU. The MB / CPU are exact replacements with matching numbers to the original. All of the remaining components including the hard drive and all applications are original. The computer is now working. The computer boots to DOS and is working. It will not boot to the Win XP OS on the hard drive. I have tried booting in the available op…

Experiencewd a hard drive failure - System recovery disc would not instal to new hard drive
by Guest MichaelPendergrass- 0 replies

My hard drive warned me it was having issues and I should back up my files as well as create a system recovery disc. I did both, two days later, the hard drive failed. I put in a new hard drive and attempted to use the recovery disc but it did not work. Will Microsoft send a recovery disc to people who have a legitimate product key? Did my hard drive failure negate my purchased copy of Windows 7 64bit Home edition that originally came with my computer? Continue reading...

Avast Free Anti-Virus indicates these files are malware, but they rapidly and repeatedly fill...
by Guest HyGee- 0 replies

I have an older computer using Windows XP with IE8 browser, and yes I know, Microsoft no longer supports these systems. However, recently a number of files have been trying, over and over, to download onto my PC. Although Avast warns me they are malware, they quickly slow my computer so it is useless, or it crashes. Avast doesn't 'find' a virus, or whatever this is when I run a scan, though it keeps 'blocking' the files. I Googled some of these files and they turned up on a site called Pastebin. I don't understand the function of this website, but all the files Avast keeps blocking are on the homepage of this site. Some of the file names are: Brackusboncak; Yatzza7; Dereb…

by Guest HyGee- 0 replies

I found these files on Pastebin.com while I was trying to figure out how to get them to stop downloading on my PC, although I don't really know what the purpose of that site is. I have Avast Free Anti-Virus, and although it shows them to be 'Malware', that doesn't stop them from repeatedly trying to download, over and over filling up my RAM and slowing my PC to an almost useless state. If I try to open two sites at once, what used to take seconds with my DSL connection, now either takes minutes, or nothing happens, or crash and re-boot. I'm using Windows XP with IE8. I don't know what one would call this type of infection as I'm not very savvy when it comes to the diff…

Installing Linux TO an SD card from USB

Hi All, I was wondering if it was possible to install Linux to an SD card from a USB stick. I've never heard of anyone doing this, but I thought that it would be more convenient than installing to a USB stick, since the SD card would not stick out of my laptop since it would be inside the SD card reader. Thanks for your answers in advance! Continue reading...
