Its Always Something with XP
by Guest WalterMWilson- 0 replies

I have Windows XP Home Edition. For a year I play Wizard101 online. Now I can't. Mozilla Firefox works well, but occasionally it comes up with [bad file name] and [unable to connect]. Next the site attempts to troubleshoot. Its links to an on-site program that returns Test OK. The file directs you to run another file. If you arrive at the second page indicating failure, it says [you have a firewall problem, or a security program setting keeping you from connecting]. I'm running NORTON and the windows firewall (which Norton shuts off to do the work itself), and I'll be ***ed if I can find the setting. Can anyone help? My ISP says "well wizard10 mu…

Microsoft security scam
by Guest VickiZB- 0 replies
No victimization occurred, just want to let everyone know that this is still going on. A person with an Indian accent called me, representing himself calling from a "tech dept" who cares about registered users that are getting their updates blocked by Microsoft Windows. He stated that emails being sent from Microsoft are being blocked by my computer, and he wanted me to turn on my computer and correct that problem. He stated that I would do the fix myself, and that he would not be involved. He tried to reassure me that he was a "certified technical support engineer". After much pressing for more details about who pays him (who is on his paycheck, I asked) he stated …

Security Update received today
by Guest Louise Porter- 0 replies

Received the following updates for my computer today. 1, Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 Suite (KB2878233) 2. Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2014 (KB890830) 1. My concern is that I don't have MS Office 2007 on my computer. I have MS XP Professional and it is an old version. Why would I be getting an update for MS Office 2007? 2. If XP is no longer being supported, why am I getting the "Software Removal Tool," although this makes more sense that than updating software that I don't even have on my computer. I called your corporate office and spoke with some one in the tech department who could not answer the questions and…

Microsoft account service unavailable, try again later
by Guest mblankford- 0 replies
I just bought a laptop with windows 8. I set it up initially with a 'local account' and now that I have connected to the internet, I want to connect my Microsoft account to it, but every time I try, it gives me a message that says "This service isn't available right now - please try again later." No matter how late I wait, it never works, and according to the status of Microsoft's service, everything should be working OK. Caps lock is not on, my password is correct, I can log in to my account via the Microsoft website, but it just will not connect to the computer. Please help, I can't use any of the real features of this computer without connecting. I've included a s…

Windows 7 64 bit SP1 Windows update not working
by Guest DougGinnings- 0 replies
I've been running a Lenovo 64 bit Windows 7 SP1 system for several years and noted that a couple of Windows updates would not run. After trying several online suggestions to get these "critical" updates to run, I made the mistake of doing a system restore, going back several years. Now Windows is royally screwed up with many programs that depend on network interfacing not working at all or in a limited way. .NET Framework 4 and .Net Framework 4.5.1 appear to be corrupted and FIX IT attempts do not fix the problem Attempts to use system restore to go back further in time have not helped. Both Firefox and IE will not work, and attempts to install new versions give me an err…

by Guest Tiger16816- 0 replies

When I boot my computer, it boots like it always has, and it shows my profile name. When i type in my password, and log in, I do not have anything the same. It looks like a guest log in, but I'm still the Admin. But if i go to Users, and find the Administrator document, everything in there was how I had it before this all happened. The document showing what I had on my desktop was still there and everything was still there, but I'm not logged onto it. Help please! I'm in my Admin log in, but I'm not in it at the same time. Windows 7 won't recognize second monitor
by Guest UnclaimedUsename- 0 replies

Hi, recently i tried to attach a second monitor to my desktop, but it refuses to recognize the old one, the one i had first, now that it is not running over VGA. The new monitor only has a VGA in, so I had to try something else for the first monitor. Both of them definitely work, the DVI in on the first monitor works with the Dvi/HDMI cable i'm trying to use and a chromecast, and the new monitor, running over VGA, is detected and working properly. My system: AMD A10-7700K Asus A55BM-A/USB3 1x4Gb G.Skill Sniper 2133MHz First monitor: Acer X203h New monitor: NEC MultiSync LCD1545V Continue reading...

Got the Arch Linux Handbook, v2.0 by Dusty Phillips today. Not a very large book but it looks like it's chalked full of good info on how to get an actual Arch install going on. Going to read through it and see what I can come up with. Anyway, just wanted to share and if anyone is looking to get one here's a link to the book on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Arch-Linux-Han...Linux+Handbook Oh, and be aware that if you order from the Book Depository in the UK it'll take a while to get to you if you're in the U.S. Continue reading...

Looking for grep, sed or awk assistance.
by Guest r31griffo- 0 replies
G'day everyone, I'm really stuck on this one, Google doesn't seem to know the answer...unless I'm asking the wrong question. First a bit of background (if you're interested): I've inherited a network Windows network that currently utilises a proxy provided by the ISP and enforced by in the domain by Group Policy .PAC file, it's difficult to manage as many users are local admins and can install a different browser which isn't covered by the GPO (engineers can be crafty little buggers!) Anyway, I've figured that a DNS filtering system will solve many of the current issues. Ideally OpenDNS would have been great but in Australia we seem to get the wrong servers IP ad…

"Standard" install
by Guest NGIB- 0 replies

Scenario: I install a Linux distro on my Core I-7 laptop with Ralink WiFi and Nvidia graphics. I get it all setup, configured and running well. I do not install any proprietary drivers. I pop this drive out and put it in my other laptop, a Core I-5 with Intel WiFi and Intel graphics. It boots and runs just fine which tells me that during the boot process the system adapts to the current hardware configuration - is this a reasonable statement? I tend to do a lot of my "experimentation" with Linux on my I-7 laptop as it's just plain fast but my daily driver is the I-5 laptop as it goes with me where ever I go. Am I setting myself up for problems if I continue do…

Alleged Apple tax avoidance deal with Ireland under investigation by the European Commission
by Guest Harish Jonnalagadda- 0 replies
The European Commission is getting set to launch a formal investigation into whether Apple's tax arrangements in Ireland are legal, or whether they qualify as illegal state aid. The focus of the investigation centres around two Apple subsidiaries that are based out of Ireland: Apple Sales International and Apple Operations Europe. Ireland is seen as a tax haven for various multinational corporations around the globe, which establish subsidiaries in the country to take advantage of the lower tax margins (12.5 percent) when compared to other EU member states. However, a U.S. Senate committee found last year that Apple was paying less than 2 percent tax by channellin…
