Important Details: -Can't access desktop, boot menu, or anything at all -F11 trick doesn't work -Laptop has no disc drive. If any of you could help me, that'd be great. Continue reading...

White Icons in Windows Explorer
by Guest TimDailey- 0 replies

Hello, I'm hoping someone smart can help me identify what is wrong with my Windows Explorer. My entire IT dept can not figure it out. When I'm browsing for files in any folder of Windows Explorer, my icons for programs will turn all white. I can still identify the program each icon is from if I show details, but visually it is very annoying and slowing down my work. I reboot my computer and the icons come back in full color briefly, but as soon as I open any program file, they turn white instantly. Very bizarre. Please help. Picture shown here: I have tried to delete the cache. (Microsoft suggestion) I have gone to "run" and typed regedit, then went to …

Synchronisation problem
by Guest Florian_M_691- 0 replies

Hello, I have a network folder marked to be offline available. This worked for two years now without bigger problems. Unfortunately, since two days one file (.pst) is not accessible any more. When switching to offline mode, the file has a size of 2.540 MB, but is marked with a cross, pale and one can't change, open, copy or delete it. When switching to online mode, the file has 0 KB but is no longer marked with a cross or pale. However, it is also not possible to do anything with the file. In the synchronization center, I get no alerts about problems or conflicts. Last time I used the file, it was smaller for a few MB. According to sync center, there are still …

I wanted to download netcat to setup a backdoor into my second computer, just to see if it works and if I can do it. However, upon downloading and running the program, my antivirus (Norton 360) stopped working, I cannot access the C drive, regedit and msconfig wont open, and it says I have a windows update (which I dont tryst, since it appeared when everything else happened). I have searched in Program files (both) and programdata, but can't find anything! I have malwarebutes too, but that says 'definitons need to be updated', then cant connect to the server. Hidden Malware
by Guest NeedsSomeHelp77- 0 replies

Hello there! I've been having a bit of an issue for a while now, and am now trying to seek out answers, if anyone can help at all. The 'malware' that seems to be on my laptop's only 'sign' or evidence that it is there at all, is that the moment you connect to the internet it starts using up a massive amount of bytes or downloads. Since we don't have unlimited internet, I've always been quite overcautious of how much I use, which on an average day doesn't usually meet 1 Megabyte, but now it'll use over 100 megabytes with ease, which has now costed money from over-charges on the internet bill..but that doesn't matter too much. It only seems to have happened on…

How can I remove "mask me" completly from my computer?
by Guest cat04- 0 replies
This is a program I added on through Firefox that will send a computer generated email address, instead of my own. When I was on a site where I play games, it took over my sign-in name and generated one on its own. My sign in name was not my email, so I could not get into the site until I deleted it. I removed it from the Add-on, and the plug in. t when I look at my account on my ISP page it list my page with a masked email. I called and they changed teh listing to my email address. However when I changed information, I got a call saying your email (masked) has been changed. Since it is a program there is nothing in the control panel. I ran windows defender …

Best free anti-virus for Windows 8.1
by Guest Elda M.- 0 replies

Hi, I realize Windows comes with Microsoft Security Essentials, but my computer has been acting up and I'd like to get a deeper scan if possible, without compromising MSE. I'd like to try something else out, even if it's a one-time deal. I'm having a few problems with my computer (lost IE, which has been addressed numerous times in another forum - still no resolve and I don't want to do a restore, too many apps to reload. I'm losing volume randomly on videos embedded in emails or on Youtube, and my keystrokes are registering fast, slow, delayed, etc., randomly, especially in my gmail account. Also, scrolling is stilted at times). I've already tried eliminating apps t…

Lost data on backup disk
by Guest entinoco- 0 replies

I have a 4TB Seagate drive that I use as a second drive for Time Machine backup plus using it to archive additional large files. Since it is a secondary backup drive (primary backup is Time Capsule) I connect it to my MacBook Pro running OS 10.9.3 about once a week for an update, but otherwise keep it in a safe place. This last time it connected the volume name had changed to its original default and appears empty. I suspect all the files are still there (over 3TB). How can I recover them? Thanks, Ed Continue reading...

Active Directory Domain Controller via Samba/CentOS 6.5
by Guest alexandervj- 0 replies

I set up an active directory with Samba/CentOS 6.5 and have a couple problems.. when I run dcdiag /s:[server-name] it gives me a bunch of errors, one main one is when it is testing the server it says "The host ... could not be resolved to an IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc. Neither the server name nor the Guid DNS name could be resolved by DNS. Check that the server is up and is registerred correctly with the DNS Server." Also when testing the DNS I get the following results (i only get the correct results when using [domain].local for the first two and [domain].local.com for the last) # host -t SRV _ldap._tcp.[domain].local. _ldap._t…

Hands-on with Modern Combat 5, Gameloft's upcoming IAP-less shooter
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
Gameloft has been teasing Modern Combat 5 for weeks now through the occasional live stream and scintillating trailer. We got some time at E3 2014 to put our dirty little thumbs on it. The biggest (but far from only) change in Modern Combat 5 is that there are no more in-app purchases. Players won't be able to buy their way to the top and will have to earn their unlocks like everybody else. As always, Modern Combat sports bar-setting graphics with some particularly great water reflection and disorientation effects. The stage we looked at hasn't been seen until E3, and featured all of the action you'd expect: explodable cars, lots of bad guys, plenty of cover, and an A…

TouchPal keyboard will swipe itself onto iOS 8 this fall
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies

After Apple had announced that it would be opening up iOS 8 to third-party keyboards, TouchPal will be the latest to port its Android keyboard to Apple's mobile platform in a bid to offer consumers a different, and hopefully better, keyboard alternative. TouchPal joins a list of third-parties that have announced that they will be making their keyboards available once iOS 8 launches this fall, including Swiftkey, Swype, Fleksy, and others. In a demo posted to YouTube, TouchPal shows off the keyboard and the swiping, rather than typing, to form words in Apple's stock Messages app. The keyboard also supports next word prediction, something that iOS 8's native keyboard w…

Timing
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

Timing is the difference between hitting and missing. Winning and losing. In technology, timing is the difference between products that dent universes versus those that languish in return bins. It's the difference between features that change lives verses those that merely check boxes. Timing requires enormous amounts of audacity and patience. You can't hesitate but you can't rush. Being first is seldom the same as being best, and being late is often the same as being never. 2014 feels like a pivotal year for Apple when it comes to timing, and not just for software, but for hardware as well. WWDC 2014 saw Apple senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Feder…

Weekly photo contest: Clouds!

When shooting a photo outside, we quickly realize how important of a role the sky plays in how our picture turns out. Clouds are a huge part of that landscape and sometimes their presence can make or break a great photo opportunity. That's your task this week! Find a photo that you've taken — or snap a new one — that just wouldn't be the same without clouds in the sky. The contest begins today and ends Tuesday, June 17th at 6 p.m. Eastern time. Good luck!
