Decryption of files hit by Cryptowall
by Guest Hagotime- 0 replies
My wife's computer recently got hit by Cryptowall. Initially I was unaware of the nature of the virus and I simply backed up all of the files onto an external drive and reinstalled Windows completely. However, I now have all of her files in an encrypted format though the Cryptowall virus is gone from the machine. I was wondering if here is any known way to try and decrypt the files (without paying the ransom obviously). It has been about 20 days since the infection occurred, we just didn't need to open any of the documents until today. Additionally, we have some of the older files stored on CDs in unencrypted format. I wasn't sure if there was a program to rever…

Conduit search protect proxy settings changes
by Guest Bibleist- 0 replies
I, like most, have run into the pesky search protect by conduit. I uninstalled it three time because it came with a download even after I marked the box to refuse these product. After I learned to refuse, it began to refresh itself in a flash and remark for download. Then after I uninstalled it the third time I had the proxy server issue. I believe the software writers for conduit are instructed to punish those who learn to get rid of search protect. So the last time I got rid of it I kept getting and annoying pop up. I used my search and looked for anything that had the word proxy and conduit in it. I deleted these files and my proxy settings have remained as I set them.…

A heads-up for wine users
by Guest hazel- 0 replies
Apparently the latest kernel, 3.14, has a security fix that clashes with wine. The problem is only supposed to occur with old 16-bit DOS/windows apps, but apparently there are quite a few folk around that still use those. And configuring wine for win9x is said to fail even if you only intend to use native 32-bit apps. The problem could spread if the fix is backported into older kernels. You can read about it here. No skin off my nose fortunately! Continue reading...

by Guest G-Known- 0 replies

Google Play Music states on their website that they do, then again, looking at the asterisk saying "these formats will be transcoded to 320kbps mp3" *facepalm*. I'm looking for an app that can play m4a formats but none of the app seem to work. Most of the won't play the music and others charge you up front for features you can get on your desktop easily. Lego's Fusion bridges the divide between virtual and physical gameplay
by Guest Harish Jonnalagadda- 0 replies
The boffins at Lego seem to understand that it is getting harder for kids to tear their eyes away from a tablet or a smartphone (Angry Birds Epic anyone?), which is why they're introducing a new series of game sets that allows you to translate real world brick building to a digital medium. Dubbed Lego Fusion, the game sets come with 200 pieces and include a special Fusion Capture Plate on which the facades can be built. You can build any 16-bricks-wide by 16-bricks-tall facades, as long as all structures feature a floor and are built on the Capture Plate. After building the facade, you can use the Lego's apps camera function to capture it. The translation of the r…

AirDrop and Instant Hotspot in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite: Explained
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

While perhaps not as new and sexy as Handoff, making or taking calls, or sending and receiving SMS/MMS, the final two Continuity features in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite will absolutely make life easier for anyone with an iPhone and/or iPad and Mac. And that's the new, cross-compatible AirDrop and the new, Instant Hotspot. So, how do they work? AirDrop between everything Apple AirDrop started off on OS X Lion back in 2011. It used Bonjour (zero config) and personal area networking (PAN) to discover and transfer files between Macs, and eventually made its way from the Finder to the Share menu and Open/Save dialogs. Where it didn't find its way was on to iOS. At l…
