Why are my desktop shortcuts being saved to a public folder?
by Guest matrixlocked- 0 replies
What seems to happen when I install a new program is that a shortcut to it gets placed in C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop instead of being placed in the desktop folder under my actual user account name. The program icons appear on my desktop as they normally would but why are the shortcuts being saved to a public folder? Note: the Public Desktop folder is normally hidden but I still don't want the shortcuts being saved there. Any shortcuts that were in there I moved to the desktop folder under my actual user acc. name but that doesn't solve the problem of the shortcuts being saved there when installing new programs. Any solutions? Continue reading...

How to stop auto expanding of windows folders??
by Guest Arrrgghhh- 0 replies

How to stop auto expanding of windows folders?? When I try to drag a photo to a certain main file, the left pane auto expands, revealing the subfolders of the main folders, and usually the photo gets dropped into the wrong folder due to the unwanted auto-expanding. Nothing seems to make it stop. I've checked/unchecked the expand to current folder balloon and it still does it. I have yet to find *any* directions on any site to make it stop it. Is this just a quirk or can I actually stop it? It's driving me bananas!! Continue reading...

It all started last saturday....when I got an alert from PANDA
by Guest MissFishstick- 0 replies
Hello. I got a 'new to me' refurbished Dell D630 in January. Last sat. I got a 'malicious software trying to attack!" message from PANDA. I immediately scanned with PANDA and spybot, caught several things, then shut the system down, waited and turned it on. I get the boot screen of death, which has 3 options: win7, panda scan, or windows scan for problems. I've run all three. No problems. I've scanned 3 times with spybot, 3 times with PANDA, and five times with various window and panda products, deep system scans. There have been a few things here and there picked up, but nothing earth-shattering after the initial scan that had malware picked up, and 'suspi…

by Guest Ruth D Weston- 0 replies

I had a call from someone named James Watson at Pd inforwise pvt.ltd.: http://pdinfowise.com/. He said that his company works for Microsoft and had received over 5000 error and warning messages from my PC in the last two weeks! He showed me a screen that showed this list and also another list of over 1300 unwanted files installed on my computer. He said he could take all of these away and fix my computer, and he wanted to sell me a new security system, since my Microsoft security system had expired. When I go to Microsoft Security Essentials, I find that my computer is scanned every day about 1:00 am, and that my PC status at the present moment is Protected. I …

Complete Beginner Trying to Set Up Web Server
by Guest Drummerdude1099- 0 replies
Hey guys! So I recently started a new online business venture, and I knew we would need a web site. To start off, I consider myself good with computers and a Windows power user (GUI stuff though, not much backend knowledge). After some research, for at least the beginning of my company, I decided I should run a Linux-based web server from my home network. I built a nice PC and installed Ubuntu on it, and now I am lost. I had trouble even installing google chrome. The only programming I know is very basic HTML. From what I gathered, I need to install Apache...? I also don't know much about networking xD. I definitely have bitten off more than I can chew. Is anyone out ther…

Which disto is right for me?
by Guest ron177- 0 replies
I have just bought a low end laptop with the following specs: AMD Quad Core E2 3800 1.3 GHz RAM 4 GB DDR3 500 GB Hard Drive This is Toshiba Satellite 15.6" laptop. I wonder which distro is right for me and for this machine. Is Ubuntu too slow on this machine? Should I go with Debian or some other light-weight OS? I have been an Ubuntu user for the past 4 or 5 years. I really like that operating system. But I have had difficulty installing Ubuntu on this computer because of a bug which wipes away Windows and does not allow me to configure a dual-boot set-up. So my second question is whether I must configure a dual-boot set-up since I don't use Windows…

Continuity in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite: Explained
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Continuity is a new feature in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite that allows iPhone, iPad, and Mac to remain true to their form-factors while still working seamlessly together. Continuity includes a new, cross-compatible AirDrop, a new Instant Hotspot for effortless tethering, Handoff to pass app activities back and forth between devices, and the ability to take and make calls and SMS/MMS from your iPhone on your iPad or Mac. AirDrop AirDrop started off on OS X Lion back in 2011. It used Bonjour (zero config) and personal area networking (PAN) to discover and transfer files between Macs, and eventually made its way from the Finder to the Share menu and Open/Save dialogs…

Path spins messaging out into its own app: Path Talk
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Social network Path has spun its messaging service off into a new app, Path Talk. Path says that since its introduction last year, messaging has become their app's biggest feature. Path says that they created Talk to make messaging easier to access and use. Conversations in Talk don't last forever. According to Path, this is because conversations in real life aren't recorded permanently, so neither should your messages on Path. Messages will be automatically deleted from Path's servers 24 hours after they are sent. Path Talk also includes a feature called Ambient Status. When turned on, Talk will let your friends know what you're up to, like when you're nearby, or…

Microsoft Video Screensaver Won't Install - Windows XP
by Guest HyperText404- 0 replies
Hello When I try to install Microsoft Video Screensaver, it tells me I need to validate Windows. When I click "Continue," it opens up a link in IE and runs a script to test my Windows XP copy's validity. It then tells me my Windows copy is genuine, and redirects me to a page with MSE and IE available to download. Meanwhile, the Microsoft Video Screensaver installer stops and says "Installation was interrupted before Microsoft Video Screensaver could be installed. You need to restart the installer." I have tried multiple ways to get my Windows validated to work with the installer (it IS genuine), but nothing works (WGAPluginInstall, the WIndows Genuine Advantage…
