Hi, created a problem when tying to get the pcmanfm file manager set as default. using ubuntu 14.04 and added gnome fashback, was logged in using the gnome flashback (compiz) desktop. set the desktop up to be similar to windows. wasnt happy with the file manager and installed various file managers to test which would be preffered. decided that pcmanfm was the best option to use as the default file manager. now needed to make it the default file manager. came across this code to make another file manager defaiult sudo mv /usr/bin/nautilus /usr/bin/nautilus.bak sudo ln -s /usr/bin/pcmanfm /usr/bin/nautilus ran the code in the terminal window and had an OOps! m…

First time Linux home server
by Guest Zgould7- 0 replies

I've finally acquired myself a very nice laptop and would like to convert my gaming desktop into a part-time gaming desktop, part-time server. I plan on using the CentOS; I'm entering a career of networking so I feel like it would be wise to learn to use the RedHat OS. What I'm looking for in my Server, and let me know what is and isn't possible, and what I may need opposite of the OS: I want full access to my server from anywhere in the world. My work, school, and public Wi-Fi zones are too restricted for what I would like to do. Can I create a VPN in order to tunnel through firewall/DNS/Proxy settings? I want to be able to browse, load/play my online multiplayer…

How do I install a custom kernel through kickstart?
by Guest PeterSteele- 0 replies
I'm doing some work with OpenVZ under CentOS and it's simple enough to install the OpenVZ kernel on an already installed system. In my case, I have a streamlined OS created via kickstart. The kickstart script installs the standard 6.4 kernel automatically as part of the options: %packages --nobase @core To avoid installing the OpenVZ kernel after the OS install is complete (which requires an extra reboot), I want to install the OpenVZ kernel during kickstart instead of the standard CentOS kernel. There are two files that are required: vzkernel-2.6.32-042stab090.4.x86_64.rpm vzkernel-firmware-2.6.32-042stab090.4.noarch.rpm These replace of course the eqivalen…

Hello gurus, If we have a csv input here Code: Apple_ID, FDA_ID,Date 567,3, 10/12/2008 12:00:00 AM 567,1, 10/12/2007 12:00:00 AM 348,1, 10/12/2008 12:00:00 AM 567,2, 10/12/2009 12:00:00 AM And we like to read the first column, if the Apple_ID is the same (567 for example) AND FDA_ID (1,2,3 for example) is different, print the row with the most recent Date (567,2, 10/12/2009 12:00:00 AM in this case). In this case, the desire output would be: Code: Apple_ID, FDA_ID,Date 348,1, 10/12/2008 12:00:00 AM 567,2, 10/12/2009 12:00:00 AM We try to write some arrays using the examples in other posts but doesnt seem to work. http://unix.s…

Angela Ahrendts on transitioning to Apple
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Apple's new senior vice president of online and retail stores, Angela Ahrendts has a huge task ahead of her. Apple has built an amazing, industry-leading shopping experience, but what doesn't evolve inevitably fades away. There are new markets to open, including China, new products in the pipeline, including rumors of larger iPhone 6 and iWatch on the horizon, and new initiatives to further surprise and delight customers. Before she can tackle the future, however, Ahrendts has to handle the present day transition. So, how's she doing that? Here's what she had to say on LinkedIn: I am by no means an expert at these transitions, but I've always tried to be consistent …

Withings Activité brings refined simplicity to connected fitness watch design
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies
The Withings Activité is a smartwatch that is cleverly disguised as a classic and traditional Swiss-made watch. The charm of this $390 wrist-worn accessory isn't in that it can juggle many tasks at the same time, after all the watch can't show you notifications for missed calls or messages, but rather the watch shows off the elegance in simplicity with a traditional analog-looking clock face. Just as you won't find yourself staring at the mechanical gear of an automatic Swiss watch, the Activité won't show off the funky digital notifications of a connected smart watch like the premise behind Google's Android Wear. It has a big analog dial and begs users to tell time …

Microsoft really wants you to go Surface, offers cash with MacBook Air trade-in
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
MacBook Air owners are being tempted by Microsoft to turn in their laptops for up to $650 in credit towards buying the company's Surface Pro 3 tablet via their U.S. and Canadian retail stores. The trade-in offer, which lasts until July 31, doesn't offer any information on which MacBook Air models are eligble for this deal, saying only that the laptop must be capable of being powered up. The offer's fine print adds, "Water-damaged devices and devices with cracked screens are not considered working devices for purposes of this offer." Microsoft will only offer the full $650 credit if a person brings the MacBook Air into a brick-and-mortar Microsoft Store location an…

Specifically, Sprint will refund customers the cost of the device, and all activation and service fees will be waived. Sprint will begin this program this Friday, June 27. It will be available to new customers in Sprint stores, over the phone, and online. Windows 8>1 - Sat. it printed good. Today when I tried to print the printers, fax, etc. were all listed on the print page but it wouldn't print. When I tried to print from the DEVICE setting after swiping in from the left it said you can only print from apps. When I entered the Control Panel and clicked on printers and devices all the printers, fax, etc. were gone and had been replaced by pictures of what looked like washing machines with a blue music note at the top right and a frame from film at top right. They had names of people I know except one which said PROBOOK and one which said nothing. Search doesn't locate any printers. In Printers and Devices I can't add p…
