So yesterday I received a phone call from someone claiming to microsoft, they told me they could see that my IP address was being hacked by someone. I asked how he could see this but he didnt explain and he also wouldnt explain why microsoft was calling me and not my broadband provider. I just thought posting here would be a safe way to check that I was right to have my doubts about this guy. I think he realised I didnt trust him and he ended up only telling me to be careful. Any thoughts? Continue reading...

permanently remove notification icon Win 8.1

I accidentally loaded a program called trovi.com to my system (Windows 8.1). I spent 5 hours removing it and its associated crud, including a program I got from Cnet.com, which was supposed to be a safe program downloader and which is the program that added this freaking malware. I followed the directions on these two pages: http://www.lavasoft.com/mylavasoft/company/blog/how-to-remove-trovi-search http://www.safebro.com/trovi-com-virus-remove I didn't fool around with any of the registry stuff because I don't think I'm qualified and I don't know whether it's necessary. I could not locate any hidden files when I did a full computer search and uninstalled ever…

yum always installing higher version not specific version
by Guest snelloru- 0 replies
We use RPMS for our packaging and yum to update our environments. We have an rpm pacakge-5.1.1-3 installed in our production server and in our yum repository we have 2 higher versions of RPMS like package-5.1.3-3 and package-5.2-27. we tried to install 5.1.3-1 version but it installed 5.2-27. It caused serious problems in production. If we remove 5.2-27 package from YUM rpm repository and try installing 5.1.3-1, its installing as expected. I think yum should allow installation of specific version of RPMS and I remember doing this few times. I tried to debug but no success. HTML Code: yum install package-5.1.3-1 Loaded plugins: rhnplugin, security Excluding…

Rescue CD/USB
by Guest NGIB- 0 replies

I have 2 old 1GB USB sticks that are probably used more than any I own. One of them contains the Windows 7 rescue tools and the other has Parted Magic. I realized early in my computer career (mid 80s) that rescue tools had to be available before a problem occurs. Lately I have used FSArchiver (on the Parted Magic drive) a lot as I use it to image linux distros I'm testing. As it's such a valuable tool, I actually paid for the latest version of Parted Magic even though I had an ISO of the last free copy. I've downloaded SystemRescueCD as I want to compare it to Parted Magic but I haven't got around to that yet. Do y'all keep stuff like this handy? Continue reading...
