by Guest Kyle Wineinger- 0 replies

Last night I went to do a system repair because I hadn't since I got the computer and I got the HP Envy 4-1117nr Sleekbook "Floor Model" so of course it didn't come with a key or anything to help me out in a problem like this, but upon the reinstall when I was out of the room im guessing it turned off for what ever reason and it was not done. Atleast thats what im guessing from everything im reading. So now everytime I turn it on it goes into the loop where it says sorry something has happened were going to restart your computer to repair then immediatley comes up with failure to automatic repair. Is there anything I can do without the original OS stuff the re-do it.…

I am not sure how to go to a safe mode to do anything else. Any advice very grateful Continue reading...

Upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1
by Guest Grahanit- 0 replies
I am finding it impossible to upgrade my Windows 8 OEM to Windows 8.1. I have made two attempts both with the same result. The download (via Windows Store) seemingly installs after downloading and then comes up with the error message "Sorry we couldn't update to 8.1. etc.". The error codes were 0x80073B92 - 0x20009. When I clicked on 'try again' up came another error code - 0x8007652. Having upgraded my other computers from 8 to 8.1 I made sure that all available Windows updates (including drivers) were installed, and that the Windows Store cache was emptied. (I ran into these issues with previous upgrades). Help !! Continue reading...

malware 'webporpoise'
by Guest JohnGDean- 0 replies

I have a really nasty malware infection. The malware is named 'webporpoise'; the name is found in the registry. I could not clense it with malicious software removal tool (MSRT) nor with Defender. One reference I found on the web was warning that there are many URLs on the web put there by the malware authors purporting to automatically remove webporpoise, but instead they make the infection worse. Good warning, but I always go only to Microsoft or TechNet for this kind of problem. Problem is... I do not find any references specifically to webporpoise. The behavior of the malware is that it makes many common words in any text into hyperlinks and, if your mouse p…

Virtool:JS/Obfuscator.FN

I am trying to remove Virtool:JS/Obfuscator.FN from my Windows 7 computer. It was detected but not removed when I ran the Microsoft Safety Scanner multiple times. Windows Defender, Malwarebytes and Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool don’t detect it. Am I doing something wrong? The Malware Protection Center says Microsoft security software removes it. Do I have to install MSE or does Safety Scanner and Defender cover MSE? Any suggestions? Thanks. Continue reading...

So yesterday I received a phone call from someone claiming to microsoft, they told me they could see that my IP address was being hacked by someone. I asked how he could see this but he didnt explain and he also wouldnt explain why microsoft was calling me and not my broadband provider. I just thought posting here would be a safe way to check that I was right to have my doubts about this guy. I think he realised I didnt trust him and he ended up only telling me to be careful. Any thoughts? [Original Title: Hacking] Continue reading...

How to safely copy files to replacement computer?
by Guest BadBIOSVictim- 0 replies
In November 2011, my linux boxes were infected with BadBIOS. I purchased over a dozen replacement computers and returned, sold or discarded almost all of them due to infecting them when I copy my personal files. I burned my personal files to DVDs. Later, I learned that BadBIOS infects the burning of DVDs. Using the write protection switch on the SD card did not offer any protection. Though the switch is physical, it is merely a software flag. Last year, I purchased a Cool Gear USB 3.0 to IDE/SATA adapter with Write-Protect. I returned it because it had software. I was concerned BadBIOS would infect Cool Gear hard drive write blocker's software. I purchased two…
