Windows updates
by Guest AlvinDale- 0 replies

For over a month I have been unable to update windows. I now have 11 critical updates pending, when updating it installs the updates, when re-starting it goes to configuring updates, at around 30% it reads "failure configuring windows updates, reverting changes". I've tried the 'fixit' which states - problems installing recent updates not fixed, checking for missing or corrupt files - detected. I'm running windows 7 Continue reading...

Please help! Virus not showing in control panel?
by Guest 123alex123456- 0 replies
Usually when I think there are unwanted programs on my computer I go to Control Panel and uninstall any unusual programs. If control panel doesn't work, then I use Revo Uninstaller. But this time, my computer has been acting really slow, especially when loading sites like Youtube. I checked control panel and revo for any unwanted programs and both of them are not showing any. I don't know what is wrong. I didnt download anything for these programs to be installed. Also, there are these green ticks on some of my desktop icons, and checkboxes were disabled in folder options when I checked. Another strange thing is that when I go on to YouTube, while the page is loadin…

Hidden Files after Microsoft Security Essentials Scan and Fix
by Guest Pipesmoke- 0 replies
Hi All, First time question. I ran Microsoft Security essentials on my Windows 7 Pro Dell laptop to clean an infected USB drive. It scanned the drive and removed the virus (3 worms) Then I couldn't see any of the files or folders. I checked properties and the data space was there as used but everything was hidden. I tried to change the properties and the HIDDEN check box was greyed out so I couldn't change them. I had to Alter the settings to SHOW HIDDEN AND SYSTEM FILES and the files showed up greyed. I then googled for a solution and had to use the system prompt and the ATTRIB command to change the file attributes. Why is that? Surely this i…

A Thank You To Linux Forums
by Guest Mel Thompson- 0 replies
Dear Linux Forums: I actually appreciated getting your Birthday note and was glad to remember Linux. I have one computer I use for volunteer work, which is an Apple, and although I'm not running Linux on it, I want to say thanks to the Linux world, because I believe much of the free, open-source or shareware productivity software I use on it was originally in Linux, then later ported to Mac and PC; so without you folks I'd still be lost, since, as a low-income person who is mostly volunteering his time and energy, I could never have afforded the software that is usually associated with that work in the non-open source world. Just as unions may be a small percent of …

Modern technology, bah!
by Guest hazel- 0 replies

My iron conked out (probably the element burned out; it's quite old). So I toddled down to the local hardware shop to buy a replacement. Do you think I could find an ordinary steel flat iron? Nope! They were all monstrous-looking plastic steam irons costing upwards of £20, covered all over with controls like something out of Star Trek. The attendant told me no-one makes simple irons any more. I looked around and finally found a steam iron in Wilkinsons that looked a lot simpler and only cost £4.50, so I thought if I couldn't make it work for me, at least it wouldn't be a lot of money down the drain. I read the instructions carefully and it didn't say you had to put wat…

Help compiling programs.
by Guest Jakkin- 0 replies
I've been having this problem for as long as I've tried to compile programs and its starting to piss me off. Whenever I run the usual "configure", "make", "install" instructions, something always goes wrong and I'm sitting here with a bunch of files that are taking up hard drive space. I've followed the README's to the letter and I can't figure out how to get the darn computer to compile the program. I run the usual "./configure" and it'll work (whenever there's a configure file in the folder, I found that out the hard way), but my biggest problem is that when I do the "make" command, I get errors. (I type it just like they tell me, by writing "make" in the comma…

How to work around the current Podcast app crashing bug
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Apple's Podcast app is currently crashing for many people whenever it tries to connect with iTunes. It can still play previously downloaded episodes, but when it tries to refresh or stream, it crashes. However, there does seem to be a workaround that's getting past the crashing bug for a lot of people. It may look convoluted but it worked for me and hopefully it'll work for you! How to stop the Podcast app crashing bug Pull up from the bottom of the screen for Control Center Tap the Airplane mode icon to turn of the internet connection (presumably to prevent Podcasts from trying to contact iTunes). Pull to refresh on the main Podcasts screen (presumably that clea…

iPod touch: Who is it best for and why?
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
The iPod touch doesn't always get the attention or consideration it deserves. Some of that is simply a reflection of its current status — it hasn't seen a significant update since it was released alongside the iPhone 5 in 2012. Sure, it has the a 4-inch Retina display like the current iPhones, and the same 5mp iSight camera as the iPad line, but it's using the Apple A5 processor in time when even the Apple A7 may soon be surpassed. Yet, as Apple told us so brilliantly in 2011, technology alone is not enough. It's experience, not specs that matter to most people. And if anyone is the least bit price sensitive, if anyone wants something pocketable but doesn't want the phone…

T-Mobile is ofering a $50 promotion for both prepaid and post-paid customers who are shopping for an iPhone at an Apple retail store. The limited time promotion will offer different incentives for prepaid and post-paid customers, though the value for both is still valued the same at $50 each. Can't Extend Desktop WinXP/32, tried 3 different video cards and 4 different monitors
by Guest PacificEnvironmental- 0 replies

One of our staff member's system went down -- since we all run identical systems (P8H77M-CSM, i5-3570k, 8GB DDR3 1600), I just gave her one off my test bench. Sometime between connecting the system, powering it on, and connecting her 2nd monitor, XP decided that it would no longer like to extend the desktop to the second display -- the machine was working fine in extended mode prior. Thinking perhaps the integrated graphics (Intel HD4000) or DVI connector failed, I installed an external graphics card (nVidia 8400GS) and disabled integrated graphics at the BIOS. Windows still refuses to extend the desktop. Thinking perhaps, by chance, the monitor or cables m…

Also there was PCI Device error and SM bus controller error, it was fixed by installing updates but for audio driver nothing works not even updates. Is there any other audio driver for intel 945 motherboard other than realtek?…

Tried to refresh my laptop but it's stuck!
by Guest ashlynncook- 0 replies

I have an Acer laptop that runs on windows 8. I had used it and it worked perfectly and than the next day I turned it on and it had to update and install something for windows, so I let it play itself out but then it told me there were problems with it and it said "Diagnosing PC" for about 4 hours and wouldn't go past that. Today after a week I decided to turn it back on again and it went to a menu that said "Continue. Troubleshoot. Advanced Options" I clicked advanced options, and then I clicked refresh in hopes that would make the laptop work again. It is currently in the stage of Refreshing my PC but it is stuck on "Please wait" Im just wondering if this is going to he…
