The Notes app is the built-in way to take notes, draft memos, jot down thoughts, and otherwise record text on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. As apps go, Notes is bare-bones. You can enter and edit text, look for replacement words, and get definitions, sync between iOS, Mac, and iCloud.com, and even control Notes via Apple's virtual personal assistant, Siri, but that's about it. Previously you could change the font but that went away with iOS 7. However, iOS 8 will be bringing a few new features, including support for rich text — bold, italics, and underline — as well as the ability to insert pictures. For now, this is everything you can do with Notes for iOS 7, but…

Every week Apple adds tons of new media content on iTunes — music, books, movies and more. It's impossible to keep up with all of it, but it's not impossible to pick out the very best. Here they are! This week we've got the latest from Brooklyn indie rockers Bear In Heaven, a new Muppets movie, David Shafer's darkly comic dystopian techno-thriller, and more! Time Is Over One Day Old - Bear In Heaven Brooklyn's Bear In Heaven populated its earlier works with lo-fi krautrock jams layered with plenty of spacey, ambient moments and textures. Then came 2012's I Love You It's Cool came along with more glossy psychedelia, bigger beats and more recognizable synth treatmen…

[/url] Although there's no shortage of Pokémon content available for iOS such as third-party apps, music, video, one of the key things missing has been any sort of official games. That has now changed though as it appears The Pokémon Trading Card Game will be making its way to the iPad. As noticed by Josh Wittenkeller on Twitter at the Pokémon World Championship being held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C the game was loaded up and looking great. According to Polygon, a representative from The Pokémon Company confirmed the game is real, but could not provide a timeline for its release. I'm not really a fan of trading card games m…

The iPhone has often been called the "best camera" because it's the one most of us have with us most of the time. But it takes more than just a great camera or lens to produce great photography. One of the most important, yet most difficult, elements in creating great photographs is composition - where your subject is placed and how it's related to its surroundings. A great starting point for developing composition is to understand the rule of "thirds". Note: If you're using an iPod touch or iPad, the concepts and methods are all the same, so please follow along as well! What is the rule of thirds? Take a close look at the vertical lines in the image above.…

Apple is heavily rumored to be considering two different screen sizes for the iPhone 6, with one model claimed to feature a 4.7-inch display and the other a 5.5-inch screen size. While there have been a steady stream of leaks referencing the 4.7-inch model, there hasn't been much in the way of leaked images when it comes to the 5.5-inch variant, until now. Taiwanese blog Apple Daily seems to be one of the first to post alleged photos of the device, which the website claims will be called the iPhone 6L. The images showcase a larger and wider display panel, and also compares the display of the 4.7-inch model next to the 5.5-inch variant. The credibility of the photos…

A version of The Pokémon Trading Card Game Online that's already available for Windows and Mac PCs has now been confirmed as coming to the iPad at some point, which will make the game the first to be released for any of Apple's iOS devices by The Pokémon Company. There are other Pokémon apps for mobile devices but they are not full games. The iPad version of the trading card game was first revealed by Josh Wittenkeller via Twitter, when he uploaded a picture of the game being demoed at this weekend's Pokémon World Championship in Washington, D.C. The Pokémon Company later confirmed to Polygon that the trading card game will be coming to the iPad but offered no other …

A note to Mac users: Stop letting your pets and your kids use them as toilets. I really don't know what the hell is wrong with people, but in the store I work in, I've seen a few Macs come in in really sorry shape. One iMac came in for repair because it stopped booting. It was a major equipment failure caused by overheating. The convection vents at the top were completely blocked. That prevented the fans inside the iMac from venting the hot air. The reason they were blocked? Apparently the owners of the iMac also had birds - large ones, from the look of things. And they let the birds perch on top of the computer when they were working, to keep them company. And t…

Q: I got spammed, and the junk e-mail came from my own address. Was my account hacked? A: Not necessarily, because it's trivial to fake an a-mail address. But before you assume that somebody spoofed yours, you should verify that your account was secure. In this case, the account in question was a friend's Gmail address. His sent-messages mailbox didn't have any copies of the spam e-mails, but more definitive proof awaited in Google's records of recent activity at the account. The quickest way to look this up is to look at the bottom right corner of your Gmail window for the "Last account activity" line. It should list a time, like "2 hours ago"; click the "Detail…

The built-in Photos got its makeover last year as part of Apple's overall iOS 7 mobile redesign. This year iOS 8 is bringing Photos a much-needed functionality boost. In addition to new sharing and filter extensions, Photos is also getting a new sync solution courtesy of iCloud Photo Library, as well a bevy of new, non-destructive editing tools, and a new, smarter search system. So, how does it al work? Photo Flashbacks The original Photos app on the original iPhone was game changing. The ability to not only swipe though all your photos but pinch and zoom in and out of them became one of the go-to demos for everyone who wanted to show anyone else just what made th…

By now you've likely seen the #IceBucketchallenge sweeping across the internet. The concept is simple — Once challenged, you have 24 hours to either dump a bucket of ice water over your head and spread the word via video challenging your friends to do the same, and/or donate $100 to Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research. The hope behind it is that even those completing the challenge will donate at least $10 as well, or at the very least learn more about the disease while helping spread the word to others. It's viral marketing at its best, and in this case, all for a very worthy cause. Since the start of the challenge on July 29th, the ALS Association and its 38 …

The Fair Labor Association (FLA) has just released the report on its audit of two Chinese facilities run by Apple manufacturing partner Quanta, where they found a number of issues. The audit found that the facilities, located in Changshu and Shanghai, had a number of compliance issues. These include 62% of employees at Changshu not receiving the mandatory rest day at least once every three months. Apple says that improvements have been made to Quanta's facilities in the year since the FLA's visit in a statement to TechCrunch: In the year since the FLA's visit, we have worked closely with Quanta to drive meaningful improvements in areas identified by both the FLA and…

Want to turn something on YouTube into a GIF, but don’t want to futz with downloading third-party apps or digging around for an online converter? Here’s a handy, easy to remember trick: just add “GIF” to the beginning of the URL. After “www.” and before “youtube.com” Like so: . So, for example, you’d turn: into: www.gifyoutube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ and hit enter. Tada! To be clear, this isn’t an official YouTube tool (though I’d still argue that YouTube really, really ought to build one) — so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t work forever , particularly if YouTube’s legal team gets too bummed about the use of their trademark right in the domain. Th…

According to well-known insider, Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft will deliver a public preview of their next operating system in late September or early October. While Microsoft hasn't confirmed what this OS will be called, it's expected to be Windows 9, codenamed internally as 'Threshold'. The "technology preview" will be available publicly, and should contain many of the features expected to launch with the OS. There's no word currently on whether it will be the only public preview of Windows 9, although as Microsoft is moving to a faster release cycle, it's unlikely we'll see as many previews as we got for Windows 8. New features that have been widely rumored to make an…

If you have a hearing impairment, the iPhone and iPad feature accessibility options that make certain features more usable. One of them is a mono audio option. Since stereo sound offers distinct left and right channels, someone with a hearing impairment in one ear may miss something. Enabling mono audio will ensure that all sounds go through both ears at all times. You've just got to enable mono audio in Settings to start using it. How to enable mono audio on iPhone and iPad for those with hearing impairments Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on General. Tap on Accessibility. Under the Hearing section, turn On the option for Mono Audio. …

You know the iPhone 6 is hotly anticipated when even outlets like TMZ are trying to get in on the attention. If going from stalking celebrities to posting blurry pictures that were supposedly "smuggled out of a Foxconn factory in China" is any indicator, the hype that's going to come when the real deal is actually launched will be unprecedented even by previous iPhone standards. Apple's iPhone 6 event is reportedly scheduled for September 9 in San Francisco with launch presumed to follow on September 19. That's about a month away. How high will the hype go? What'll be next? Will we see Fox News or CNN leading with iPhone 6 parts leaks? Will we see an iPhone 6 dummy hos…

UK carrier EE is being criticized for its new customer service system that allows some customers to pay to jump to the front of the call line. If you agree to a 50p fee, you will be able to speak to the next available representative rather than wait in line like everyone else. The move has sparked outrage, with many customers taking to social media, lambasting the carrier. EE still promises take calls as rapidly as possible: He stressed the company would "still process calls as quickly and efficiently as we can". The option of paying the charge is being made available to everyone except pay-as-you-go customers. What do you think of EE's new "priority answer" po…

You've probably looked at a few of your digital photos and said, "That's nice. But it could be just a bit better if I tweaked it somehow." If that's the case, then you need an image editor in your arsenal. Here are the best ones you can get for the Macintosh. Your Mac comes with iPhoto, which is adequate for organizing and sharing photos and even doing some editing: red eye reduction, cropping and straightening, even color adjustments. But if you've run the gamut (no pun intended) with what you can do with iPhoto, you're probably in need of something a bit more sophisticated. Acorn 4 Flying Meat developed Acorn as an easier-to-use alternative to some of t…
