Apple has now released a new update for iMovie and although the change log is short and sweet, if you make use of iMovie Theater and iCloud you'll want to make sure you grab the download. According to the change log, the update includes iCloud compatibility improvements for iMovie Theater. We've never really experienced any issues with iCloud and iMovie Theater but clearly enough people did to justify an update for it. The update is available right now and should be showing as v10.0.5 for those of you who like to keep track. Download Now Continue reading...

There's just something about this classic genre of photography that can set a mood or tell a story be it moody, dramatic, romantic, or what have you. So this week we want to see your best silhouettes, keeping in mind the subject doesn't have to be a person, it can be anything with the proper lighting. The contest begins now and ends Tuesday August 26h at 11:59 PDT. Good luck! It's also time to announce the winners of our last photo contest! We had quite a few fantastic submissions, and chose two winners. Those winners are... iPhone 5s, No lenses. Edited through InstaEditor. "W…

Vesper is thoughtfully designed note-taking app for iPhone (also coming soon to the Mac). It lets you quickly create, tag, and organize any snippets of text, links, or images you want to keep handy. One of its most important attributes, however, is restraint. Features have to earn their place in Vesper. One of the features yet to earn a place is "favoriting". The idea is that you could quickly heart or star a note that's very important to you and have it show up in a special favorites folder in the list. Luckily, with a little creativity, you can essentially get favoriting right now and simply by using the existing tag feature. How to heart or star tag notes in Vesper …

In a report by comScore analyzing app usage, it seems that the top 25 most used apps are made by some of the largest tech and digital media brands in the world. With Facebook leading the charge by number of users and time spent in its apps, others on the list include Google, Apple, YouTube, Amazon, and eBay. Surprisingly, though, games did not make the list. The ranking of top apps is dominated by app constellations of some of the largest digital media brands; specifically, Facebook, Google, Apple, Yahoo, Amazon and eBay. These six brands account for 9 of the top 10 most used apps, 16 of the top 25, and 24 of the top 50. Second to Facebook is YouTube. Other…

Apple just confirmed that iCloud service has been restored. All iCloud components are now fully functioning. Apple so far has not commented on the reason for this morning's outage. Original story: We've been hearing reports from our readers that iCloud is down, and now it looks like Apple has officially confirmed the outage. At the time of this writing, select iCloud services are down, but Apple's iMessage service for messaging iOS and OS X Mac users are still up and running so while you may not be able to pull up that Pages document and collaborate in the cloud, you're free to chat about the outage. Services that are down at this time include Documents in the Clo…

Good news for users of the OS X Yosemite public beta: beta 2 is now available. The fresh update brings the public beta inline with the latest version of the Yosemite Developer Preview. The first edition of the Yosemite Public Beta was released late last month, bringing a taste of the next generation of OS X to the masses. We're likely quite close to an official release for Yosemite, so the updated public beta should be more stable with fewer bugs and the like that the previous edition. An update version of the redesigned iTunes 12 beta is also included for beta testers. If you're in the public beta program, the beta should now be available to download through the Mac…

There's something to be said for convenience and fashion in one, though we might have to question just how convenient the battery-as-a-bracelet QBracelet really is. The band splits in the middle, with a hinge on one side and your choice of a microUSB plug or Apple Lightning connector on the other. Simply pop it off your wrist and plug into the charge port on your phone to juice up. But how much juice are you looking at? Not enough, especially not for the $99 asking price. It's not a smartwatch — it's just a battery, for your wrist. Inside the curved metal shell of the Qbracelet you'll find 1160mAh of battery. That's good for a touch over half a charge on an iPhone 5s…

Superhero Workout is a new game for iPhone and iPad that uses motion recognition from the device's camera to track your exercise and frame it as a game. There are 20 missions all told, relying exclusively on body weight - that is, you don't need any equipment to enjoy these, only steely resolve. Superhero Workout comes from the same developer as Zombies, Run!, which was an innovative running tracker that used audio of the undead to keep you moving. $4.99 - Downl…

Mailbox, the e-mail client from Dropbox typically restricted to mobile, is coming to desktops with a brand new Mac app. It's still in a closed public beta format for which you'll need to request a "betacoin" to access, but it's looking good already. If you already signed up on the waiting list, check your inbox. The Mailbox beta includes support for drafts, so unfinished messages are stored locally and eventually will sync across devices. There's also a "snooze to desktop" feature live that will let you shunt messages to your computer that you don't have time to answer on your mobile device. The interface looks very polished as is, and we're eager to see how the prod…
