If you've got an iPhone 5c that just doesn't seem to vibrate no matter what mode you have it in, it's possible that the vibrator assembly itself is defective or blown. In some cases, a defective vibrator assembly also causes weak vibration that gets fainter and fainter over time. If that sounds like something you're experiencing, it probably needs to be replaced. If you're for some reason not covered by warranty, or just prefer doing the repair yourself to save some cash, we can walk you through where to get replacement parts and how to perform this relatively easy iPhone repair all on your own! AAPL has confirmed the next iPhone event will be held on September 9. In eleven days we expect to see a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and some kind of wearable device. There are rumors of a larger, 5.5-inch iPhone as well, along with rumors that it might cost more than the smaller sizes that came before it. Will anybody want a 5.5-inch iPhone? Can Apple justify a higher price for one? What does it mean to the company's potential profits? In emerging markets folks who need a phone rely on it as their only computing device. So big phones are more popular. In the western markets people tend to own phones and either tablets, computers or both. So "phablet"-sized phones haven't sold in…

Anonymity: it’s all the rage–Whisper, Secret–and it’s rage-inducing. A Brazilian court has ruled that Secret must be removed from app stores there, and existing installs must be remotely wiped. The UK’s House of Lords has essentially recommended the extinction of online anonymity. As usual, judges and politicians don’t understand technology. Anonymity can used for awful things, yes; but it’s incredibly important. Why? Because cameras keep getting cheaper, and better, and more ubiquitous, as does facial recognition software. As The Economist recently put it: “the idea that anyone will be able hide for long in Nepal, or anywhere else, looks quaint.” Have you ever i…

Samsung has aired yet-another anti-Apple attack ad, this one involving a guy walking around the streets of New York City showing passersby both the iPad Air and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S. Rather than point out the glaring problems with the ad, like Samsung using a white Tab but a black iPad for a "test" in which one of the criteria is "brightness", or having the "host" leading the passersby, pre-emptively telling them which tablet is "better", I'm going to try to help Samsung out here and focus on the core of their problem — they're copying it wrong. It's 2014 and Samsung just fielded an ad saying the plastic, faux-leather backed Tab they released last month is lighter …

Google will release a fairly substantial update for its Chrome web browser on OS X, finally upgrading the popular software from 32-bit to 64-bit architecture, something Macs have been supporting for some time now. The search giant has published a beta of the 64-bit version of Chrome, following the stable update on Windows with the same new feature. There are numerous advantages of 64-bit over 32-bit architecture when it comes to software and while consumers may not notice a visual improvement (once the 64-bit edition makes it to the live stable release channel, that is), it'll definitely work some technical magic in the under the hood. As well as the underlying chang…

Apple's let the cat out of the bag: There will be an Apple event in September. It's scheduled for September 9th and it happens at the Flint Center, where Apple historically introduced the Macintosh 30 years ago. It seems like a sure thing that Apple will introduce the iPhone 6, but what role will the Mac play at the event? All the invite says is "Wish we could say more," but the fevered imagination of some folks went into overdrive Tuesday after images of the invitation was published online. In typical fashion, as has become almost an annual tradition, some are trying to divine meaning from each pixel of the invitation image to see what they can learn ahead of the ac…

On the Mac, you can also drag and drop photos, outside audio recordings, and documents into your note. Scale and transform handwriting and sketches like you would images, rotating, cropping, and more. In addition to syncing with iCloud, you can backup your notes using…

Even by Microsoft standards, this month's botched Black Tuesday Windows 7/8/8.1 MS14-045 patch hit a new low. The original patch (KB 2982791) is now officially "expired" and a completely different patch (KB 2993651) offered in its stead; there are barely documented revelations of new problems with old patches; patches that have disappeared; a "strong" recommendation to manually uninstall a patch that went out via Automatic Update for several days; and an infuriating official explanation that raises serious doubts about Microsoft's ability to support Windows 9's expected rapid update pace. I've been covering (and suffering) Microsoft's patching mishaps for more than a d…

You’ve had your smartphone for a while. But let’s face it: you’ve never read the manual. You take great pride in the fact you know how to use it. Then, it happens. You see someone do something extraordinary with his or her phone that you did not know was even possible. Friends don’t let friends have smartphone skill envy. Here are some of my favorite secrets buried in your phone settings that you probably don’t know, but will use now. Quick note: There are so many versions of Android out there that these instructions won’t work for every phone. Where I can I’ve included apps that do the same thing. 1. Take a screenshot Have you ever wanted to capture something…

Support for IPv6 is enabled by default in most operating systems, and legend has it that disabling it will increase your internet speed. That's not really true, and here's why. Chris Hoffman at The How-To Geek explains that the trick of disabling IPv6 for more speed is just a myth, but it at least has some truth to its origin. Some browsers—like Firefox 3—handled IPv6 poorly in the past. In those broken instances, disabling IPv6 was the best fix at the time. The myth lived on, however, because computers would supposedly search for an IPv6 address first before realizing it's not available and switching to the more common IPv4. Disabling IPv6 would bypass those speed…

Windows 9 news is coming at a faster clip now that we're drawing closer to its likely September 30 debut, and the latest concerns the new OS's price. According to Russian leaker WZOR (via Myce) Microsoft is planning some nice incentives to get folks to upgrade to Windows 9. For Windows 8.1 users who want to make the jump, WZOR reports Windows 9 will either come free or be available through a special offer. We'd put our money on it going the free route since Windows 8.1 arrived at no charge for Windows 8 users. If you bought a retail or OEM flavor of the Windows 8, Microsoft will apparently throw you a Windows 9 upgrade for around $20 (about £12, AU$21). Finall…

Minuum has previewed their upcoming keybaord for iOS 8. The Minuum's keyboard is built around a powerful autocorrect and has its own predictive text interface. But the most notable feature of the keyboard is its ability to resize. Minuum can be completely condensed, bringing all letters into a single row. The goal of the condensed keyboard is to create a solid typing experience for people who have a harder time typing on a touchscreen keyboard. Minuum's autocorrect engine removes the need for precision typing, while giving you more room to see the rest of your screen. You can also use Minuum in a standard layout in order to better teach the autocorrect. Minuum…
