Even the IFA, the big German trade show that just saw the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 can't escape the shadow of Apple's upcoming iPhone 6. That's thanks to case makers who, every year, bring their dummy units along to show off their upcoming wares. This year, the same manufacturer who previously showed off iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s mockups before their launch had an iPhone 6 mockup ready and waiting. Sadly it was locked away in a glass case, but we did at least get a look at the front and sides. All told, it looks a lot like the leaked images that have been floating around the web in recent weeks and months. It's larger, still metal and the edges of the phone h…

After being rumored to be in talks with credit card issuers American Express, MasterCard, and Visa, Apple is now said to be in talks with some of the largest financial institutions to negotiate discounts on payment processing. The iPhone-maker is now speculated to be in talks with American Express, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, Capital One, and Bank of America to ink agreements for credit card processing. The iPhone 6, which is expected to be announced in a few short days, is believed to come with an NFC chip that would allow Apple's latest smartphone to be used as a digital wallet allowing customers to pay for goods inside retail stores. The financial deals that are s…

Notifications on your Mac help to keep you informed about what's going on in the various applications you have installed, on web sites and more, without interrupting whatever you're doing at the time. Here's how to access them. Notifications on the Mac comprise banners and alerts, both of which appear on the screen, and badges — red marks on applications indicating an action is required. Badges help show you how many incoming e-mail messages you have, for example. Banners pop up when an application passes a message — a web site you have granted permission to has a new headline, for example, or someone has sent you an iMessage. Alerts look like banners, but demand you…

The rumors and reports about what Apple will reveal on Tuesday in Cupertino continue today, with the New York Times claiming that Apple's unconfirmed iWatch will have a flexible screen and the iPhone 6 will have some kind of one handed mode. The story, which cites unnamed sources, claims the iWatch's flexible screen will be "protected by a cover composed of sapphire, a type of tougher glass." As far as the one handed mode for the iPhone 6, the NYT claims it can be turned on and off, but when its on it will allow owners "to type or use apps with just one hand." Exactly how this will be done was not reported. One thing we know for sure; iMore will be at the press ev…

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple's plans for their wearable device, which the media has already called the 'iWatch' include putting in near-field communication, or NFC, hardware inside. If you're setting up a new web server or another device that's going to be connected to the Internet and you want to put it through its paces before it's live, or if you're having trouble with spyware and adware networks, there's an invisible file on your Mac that can help. It's called the Hosts file, and this is how to use it. The Domain Name System When you type in the domain name of a web site you want to visit there's a lot happening behind the scenes. Every web site, every service, almost every device connected to the Internet has a unique numeric address that tells all the other devices where it is — its TCP/IP address. The Domain Name System (DNS) translate…

According to prevailing rumors, Apple will not only introduce the iPhone 6 next Tuesday at their annual September event but their new wearable device as well, commonly but perhaps not correctly referred to as the iWatch. There's a lot of excitement around the idea of something new from Apple, perhaps unreasonable, unsatisfiable excitement at this point. That leads to huge expectations and an equal and opposite amount of expectational debt. So, let's pause for a minute. Let's take a breath. And let's take a look at what we can reasonably expect from Apple's next wearable. Wearables past and future Apple has been making wearables for years. They called them iPods, s…

Microsoft drops hints in several commercials As Microsoft prepares to combine its Windows RT tablet operating system with Windows Phone, Microsoft executives are stuck with a tricky decision on branding for an upcoming OS that runs across both tablets and phones. Apple has iOS and Google has Android, and both operating systems run across tablets and phones instead of laptops and PCs. Microsoft has Windows RT which runs on tablets, Windows Phone for phones, and Windows 8.1 for tablets and PCs. It’s a bit of a confusing mix for consumers to understand, but there are signs Microsoft might be moving away from using lots of different Windows names. Microsoft’s lat…

[custom:ifa2014] We're out at IFA 2014 where Samsung's announced their latest and greatest: the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. And as we're wont to do, we wanted to compare it to some of the most popular devices on the market today, which, of course, includes the iPhone 5s. Sure, the iPhone 6 is due out in a week's time, but that's never stopped us before. By the time the Note 4 hits the market, it will be contending with Apple's latest and likely biggest, but there's still a lot to compare here, and two very different takes on the smartphone. The Note 4 does borrow somewhat from the iPhone 5's industrial design, bringing a beveled metal band around the edge to the Samsung p…
