China decides to call iPhone's location tracking feature a 'national security concern'
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
The government controlled China Central Television network has called the location tracking feature on the iPhone, using iOS 7, a 'national security concern', claiming that people who might access that data could discover "state secrets". The claims, which were made earlier today, could represent the first salvo in a state-run campaign against Apple and the iPhone, which currently has just eight percent of the smartphone market share in that country. The statements added that Apple would have to "take on any legal responsibilities" if leaks from the location tracking feature cause harm. This is not the first time the state-run media in China has been openly critic…

Family Sharing on iOS 8: Explained
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
You can already share media with your family, but iOS 8 will make it easier to share even more — and keep track of who has what iPhones, iPod touches, iPads everywhere — everyone in the family has devices and uses them for everything. One of iOS 8's key improvements is more convenient family sharing. This is what it is and how it works. Easier media sharing and better parental control You've been able to share media content with other members of your family for quite some time thanks to Apple's Home Sharing: Up to five computers and an unlimited number of iOS devices are all linked to a central Apple ID used to buy media and apps. That's how it's set up …

Apple blocking older versions of Flash after yet another security exploit
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
Apple is now blocking older versions of the Adobe Flash web plugin, advising users to upgrade to the latest version in order to continue using it. This is due to a recent vulnerability that could cause user data to be lost to attackers exploiting the issue on a number of vulnerable sites. Users running older versions should now see a "Flash Out of Date" button where the plugin would normally be, and have issued instructions for updating Flash on the Apple Support website. Anyone that needs to run an older version of Flash can run it in Unsafe Mode in Safari 6.1. Flash continues to be an important part of the web experience for so many people, it's sad that it rema…

Speaking of accessibility, here's a terrific talk by Robin Christopherson from Mobile Mobile Conf 2013. Robin will take the stage to thoroughly and wonderfully blast away any preconceptions you may have about the potential of technology to create a truly inclusive future. Being blind himself he provides us with an excellent first-hand example of the choices we can provide for all our customers and users if we simply design with an eye for inclusion. Robin will be talking about (but more importantly demonstrating) the truly empowering nature of technology. From AI to robots, from apps to wearables he'll be showing how putting truly inclusive design at the heart of th…

Happy 6th birthday, App Store!
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

In 2007 the iPhone revolutionized the smartphone, but it wasn't until July 10, 2008 that Apple launched the App Store and revolutionized how software was developed, distributed, discovered, and downloaded, not just on mobile but on computers. Today, just like how almost every phone has a large, capacitive touch screen and multitouch interactivity, almost every phone has platform-provided store where you can get apps to run on it. Just like the iPod had iTunes, the iPhone (and later iPad) had the App Store. And it turns 6 years old today! Creating the App Store was by no means easy. As a good friend of mine put it, it required a forced march from an engineering team alr…

iOS 8 wish-list scorecard: How many came true?
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
Back before WWDC 2014 I wrote a series of posts detailing some of the things I wished very much to see from Apple in iOS 8. Some of them I'd been wishing for for years. Others I'd only just begun to think about. After the keynote I'd meant to go through and see just how many of my wishes had, coincidentally, come true. In all the excitement, however, it slipped my mind. Today, in light of some extra news, several people reminded me about it. So, here it is: Everything I asked for prior to WWDC 2014, what came true, and what I'm still waiting for! Pervasive inter-app communications: We got Extensibility, which in some ways isn't as all-encompassing but in other ways is…

Our customers tell us that business continuity – the ability to backup, replicate and quickly recover data and applications in case of a system failure – is incredibly important. 9 of 10 emergency wireless calls lack accurate location data in D.C. area
by Guest Chuong H Nguyen- 0 replies

Don't cut the cord just yet on your home phones! FCC data reveals that 9 out of 10 emergency calls made with a cell phone in Washington, D.C. lack accurate location information, making it harder for emergency workers to respond in a crisis. The data was collected in the first half of 2013 and only covers the D.C. area in the U.S. Through the Freedom of Information Act, public interest group Find Me 911 reported: According to data filed with the FCC by the D.C. Office of Unified Communications last fall, just 10.3% of the wireless calls made to the District's 9-1-1 communications center from December 2012 to July 2013 included the latitude-longitude (or "Phase I…

Dead Trigger 2
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies

Dead Trigger 2 brings back rootin’-tootin’ first-person-shootin’ to the zombie apocalypse. Despite the altogether realistic visuals, Dead Trigger 2 remains chock-full of tongue-in-cheek humor. Controls now use a fast and natural auto-fire mechanism which keeps the focus on moving and aiming. More notably, there’s a robust hideout and crafting system where you get various assistants to build stuff for you, though it takes time. There is a premium currency in place, but it’s used almost exclusively to speed up building times; all weapons can be created and upgraded using the currency you earn throughout gameplay. Regular events bring players to new parts of the world, with …

Plants vs. Zombies 2
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies

Plants vs. Zombies is a venerable iOS franchise for a good reason. The bizarre premise of protecting your back lawn from hordes of undead with sunflowers is certainly part of that, but there’s a lot of tactical thinking in terms of plant placement and picking the right ones before the attack begins. In Plants vs. Zombies 2, you’re taken back in time by Crazy Dave and his sentient Winnebago Penny to defend against zombies dressed in era garb. The zombies are getting smarter and challenge your reaction speed in a number of ways, though you also have a whole new complement of plants to use. Stages have special terrain features to keep every round fresh. Plant food can be col…
