Apple has confirmed that select iCloud services are down for users, including Documents in the Cloud, iCloud Mail and Contacts, and Photos. Services like iChat, Maps, iMessage, FaceTime, iTunes, App Store, Apple ID, and Find My iPhone are still working fine. Apple did not give any reason for the outage, but you can check on the status of iCloud through Apple's system status page. Is iCloud down for you? Update: Looks like iCloud is back up and running! After having rolled out the iOS 8.0.2 update to consumers, it looks like Apple is actively working behind the scenes to keep the momentum for iOS software updates going. Now, in Apple's developer portal, developers have access to iOS 8.1 beta 1. Currently, a change log isn't given as to what will be new with the iOS 8.1 beta 1 update will include. Apple said: This is a pre-release version of iOS 8.1 beta for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Devices updated to iOS 8.1 beta can not be restored to earlier versions of iOS. The build for the software is listed as 12B401. Given that you cannot revert back to an earlier version of iOS, will you be an early adopte…

iOS 8 brings with it an awesome new ability to pull filters, editing tools, and lots more from your favorite photo editing and filter apps. However, it requires that developers support the feature in order for it to work. Luckily, there are already a handful of really great ones available that can give you a wide range of tools to use without ever having to leave the Photos app. So if you're only concerned with the best iPhone apps where photo extensions are concerned, these six apps should definitely be on your short list! Litely Litely has some of the best subtle filters that aim to enhance your photos rather than change them completely. Not only can you acc…

  5. Microsoft showed off a small number of Windows 10 features at the company's event this morning, but one rumored one was missing: Cortana. The software maker focused on some of its desktop improvements for Windows 10, and Cortana is one of the many changes that will be coming ahead of the final release next year. While the special Technical Preview build of Windows 10 that will be released tomorrow won't include Cortana, Microsoft is already testing the digital assistant inside of other Windows 10 builds internally. It's an early implementation, but Cortana will be fully integrated into the search experience in Windows 10. Microsoft's new Windows 10 OS has a new sear…

  6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84NI5fjTfpQ The next major version of Windows, Windows 10, will be available late next year. The new operating system is being unveiled today at an event in San Francisco, where Microsoft announced its name and began detailing new features, including the return and makeover of the Start Menu, the introduction of multiple desktops, and a new universal search feature. Microsoft isn't hiding that, for mouse and keyboard users, this is a move back toward what Windows users are used to and away from the contentious changes in Windows 8. "It gives the familiarity of Windows 7 with some of the elements of Windows 8," Windows chief Terry Myer…

  7. Microsoft finally surprised us all: At the eagerly-awaited first briefing for the next Windows, the firm revealed that they had decided to skip the 9 and call it Windows 10 instead. From a features perspective, we only learned about a few minor new features that hadn't already leaked. And as promised, the technical preview won't ship until October. Which starts tomorrow, by the way. To say that this was a different kind of Windows event is a major understatement. I want to focus on the details of the announcement here, but it's at least worth pointing out that Terry Myerson's team is approaching Windows 10 with a completely different—for the better—approach. Not just w…

  8. During its big unveiling of the new Windows 10 operating system, Microsoft demonstrated a feature called Continuum, which is designed to make it easy for users to switch between touch interfaces and non-touch environments. One of the biggest criticisms of Windows 8 was that it was difficult for users of mice and keyboards to navigate the interfaces designed for touch, and touchscreen users had trouble navigating the traditional desktop that works so well with a mouse and keyboard. With Continuum, Microsoft appears to be taking that criticism to heart, and it says the new interface design smoothes those transitions. Microsoft says this interface was built specificall…

  9. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84NI5fjTfpQ Microsoft is officially unveiling the name for the next release of Windows today: Windows 10. While the software maker had referred to Windows 10 as codename Windows Threshold internally, today’s official naming puts any rumors of Windows, Windows TH, Windows X, Windows One, and even Windows 9 to bed. It’s simply Windows 10, marking a jump from the mixed reception of Windows 8. Described as Microsoft's "most comprehensive platform ever," Windows 10 will offer a tailored experience for all hardware across a single platform family. And developers can build universal apps that will work everywhere. Here's how Microsoft desc…

  10. Back in June, Microsoft gave Windows Phone's personal assistant the ability to make predictions on World Cup games. It started off as a fun little novelty — the AI inside your phone is making a guess! — but it quickly became a lot more than that: the assistant, Cortana, was actually predicting the outcomes correctly. It ended up nailing all 15 of the knockout games. The lab turns polling into a game. That's because Cortana's data was coming from Microsoft's own research arm, and Microsoft is now looking to invest more heavily in its ability to predict the future. This week it's opening the Microsoft Prediction Lab, which includes a website that conducts polling that's…

  12. We're about to find out what's next for Windows. Microsoft is preparing to take the stage in San Francisco to unveil the latest improvements to its desktop operating system. We can't say for sure whether it'll be called Windows 9, but it sounds like a significant upgrade all the same. The Start Menu is making its grand return, which in and of itself will be enough to thrill many users hanging onto a mouse and keyboard. But the next version of Windows is expected to offer much more than that. Recent leaks hint Microsoft is planning some fairly drastic user interface changes for traditional desktop users. The Start Screen as we know it in Windows 8 may be going away …

Before the iPhone 6 launched to the world, its biggest rival in the smartphone space, Samsung, launched a new competitor. We think of the Galaxy S5 as the big rival, and sales numbers surely back that up, but in the Galaxy Alpha, Samsung has a device that's 4.7-inches and made with its own dose of metal. And over on Android Central I've squared them off against each other. Platform bias aside, there's a tough choice to be made if you're presented with these two side-by-side in the store. So head on over and check out the post in full as each phone is broken down and pitted against its new rival. Does the Galaxy Alpha sway you at all? Samsung Galaxy Alpha versus i…

Normally when you're walking around with a WiFi-enabled device, if it's not connected to a network, it's broadcasting probes in order to try and find known networks. These probes would be sent using your phone's WiFi MAC address, which is a unique and normally persistent value. This means that anybody monitoring these probes, say in a department store for example, can persistently track you through a store and across multiple visits. This information isn't tied to your personal identity, but a lot of information about your shopping habits could be gleaned from this data by analytics companies, and some users aren't thrilled about not having a say in this. And remember, th…

Jawbone UP fitness tracker owners have enjoyed using the official iPhone and iPad app for some time, but the company has just released a second fitness tracking app with support for Apple HealthKit. Fear not if you're baffled by the presence of two apps as we'll explain what's going on and help clear up any confusion. The old (or rather, current) app requires the use of Jawbone's UP and UP24 (check our review) bands, while the newly released UP app uses Apple's HealthKit to use your iPhone (running iOS 8) to track progress as well as apps and wearables from other companies. If you own a UP wearable and are content with the app and service, you'll be able to continue …

A company called Reis Labs has announced plans for a wooden Bluetooth speaker called the Street Performer, and are seeking funds to launch it via Kickstarter. The page states: Reis' unique wood construction, in lieu of a more conventional plastic or metal casing as employed by most speaker manufacturers, naturally provides an extraordinarily rich sound. In addition, our internal packaging has been designed to maximize amplification without compromising sound quality. To best exploit the acoustic properties of our housing, we use a varied range of powerful drivers, tweeters, radiators and other components in our speakers. There will be two models sold; a re…

The European Union is apparently set to accuse Apple of taking illegal tax aid from Ireland. The aid allegedly came in the form of sweetheart deals that resulted in a much lower tax rate. Apple currently enjoys a very low tax rate in Ireland, and the company says that no laws were broken in their deal with Ireland, where it's been operating for more than thirty years, according to the Financial Times: Apple, which has operated in Ireland since 1980, maintains that its agreements with Ireland did not break any laws. "There's never been any special deal, there's never been anything that would be construed as state aid," Luca Maestri, Apple's chief financial officer, t…

The iPhone 6 Plus would really benefit by giving folders reachability view by default and providing an option to view more than nine apps per page When it comes to arranging the application shortcuts on my phone's home screen, I'm a folders addict. I hate scrolling horizontally through pages and pages of apps. Occasionally I try and allow apps to spread out across more home screen panes, but eventually my OCD kicks in and I spend hours re-organizing everything until I'm down to fitting it all neatly on the default home screen view, with my most frequently-used apps at the bottom so they're easily within reach of my thumb. Accomplishing this typically means I need to us…

  23. We’re less than 24 hours away from Microsoft’s special Windows event. After a mixed reception to Windows 8, Microsoft has invited members of the media to "hear about what’s next for Windows and the enterprise." The software maker is expected to detail upcoming changes to Windows at the event, including the return of the Start Menu, a new virtual desktops feature, and a number of new changes to the traditional desktop area of Windows. It’s an event that will focus on power users and enterprise customers, and should give us an early look at what to expect from what many are calling Windows 9. Microsoft will deliver an early "Windows Technical Preview" in early October…
