In-app purchases and the App Store: What every parent needs to know
by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies
In-app purchases (IAP) can seem like complicated, confusing things, especially if you're a parent new to the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and App Store, and trying to figure it all out for yourself and your kids. If you're already concerned about spending, if you're already stressed by technology, if you're already juggling as much as you can, then in-app purchases gone wild can sound downright scary. Sadly, that's largely because of stories, needlessly sensationalistic stories, portraying IAP as scary. Stories that, instead of empowering parents to take control, paint them as hapless victims whose families are completely beyond control. Luckily, Apple provides tools for any…

A bigger iPod touch: Engineered for even more funness?
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
In late June Apple rejiggered the iPod touch line, making a consistent feature set across the line, dropping the price and lowering the cost of additional storage capacity. It's probably enough to provoke some short-term sales increases of the iPod touch, but I'm more interested in what comes next. What I'd really like to see is a bigger iPod touch. Now, we've heard a lot about a bigger iPhone. The rumor has been repeated often enough that many of us take for granted that it's on the way, though Apple hasn't actually said a word one way or the other. The case for a bigger iPod touch Assuming, for the moment, that the rumors are correct and that a 5.5-inch iPh…

Battery-less Philips Hue Tap switch taps in for US availability
by Guest Derek Kessler- 0 replies
US customers can now buy the Philips Hue Tap switch from the Apple Store to easily control their Philips Hue lights. Previously the Hue Tap was only available in Europe, which makes sense as Philips is a Dutch company. The switch has no batteries and is powered through kinetics simply by pushing the buttons. Yep, buttons — there are four three smaller round affairs and one big button that comprises most of the face. Those buttons are all programmable and can be hooked up to any "scene" (a combination of specific lights, colors, brightnesses) from within the Hue App on your iPhone or iPad. Tapping a button once will turn on that scene, and again turns it off. The H…

by Guest Allyson Kazmucha- 0 replies
If you can't hear the caller on the other end of the line when you hold your iPhone to your face, or they sound distorted all the time, it's possible that the earpiece is defective or blown out. Most users that have iPhones with this issue can verify it if speakerphone works just fine. If that sounds like what you're experiencing with your iPhone, an earpiece replacement may be in order. Depending on what model iPhone you have, the difficulty range can vary. One thing is for certain though, performing an iPhone repair on your own is a heck of a lot cheaper than purchasing a new iPhone. How to fix a blown earpiece in an iPhone 5 The earpiece on the iPhone 5 was…

Europe wants Apple to get serious about hidden costs of freemium apps
by Guest Joseph Keller- 0 replies
The European Commission is criticizing Apple for not doing enough to inform customers about the true costs of free apps that come with in-app purchases. The Commission wants Apple to make the real cost of these games apparent to customers before they download an app. Apple has yet to make a committment to address the issue. There are a number of protections that the European Commission are asking app distributers to put in place, according to the BBC: Games advertised as "free" should not mislead consumers about the true costs involved; Games should not contain direct exhortation to children to buy items in a game or to persuade an adult to buy items for them; Consu…

Since Google+ launched, many have complained about the service’s requirement that users use their real names. Complaints grew ever louder once Google started pushing users to use Google+ for YouTube comments. Don’t like your legal name? Using another name for safety or personal reasons? Just don’t want the Internet at large knowing your name but still want to amaze the world with your YouTube wit? TOO BAD. If using your real name wasn’t an option, Eric Schmidt reportedly suggested finding another social network. The idea was that people would be less willing to leave awful comments under their real name. Instead, many legit commenters stopped commenting while many jer…

If we see any evidence of illegal downloads...(keygens, crack programs etc) or activator tools you will be asked to remove them before help is given. Unless you are requesting help on actually removing them. The reason for this stance is because a lot of staff here have connections to software vendors and it doesn't look very good if we are seen to condone the use of illegal software. Plus from a legal point of view it's not good standing for our site. It's also a good source of malware.... by adding malware to the download, the bad guys get you to infect your system for them. Thank you for your understanding.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal judge in New York has granted prosecutors access to a Gmail user's emails as part of a criminal probe, a decision that could fan the debate over how aggressively the government may pursue data if doing so may invade people's privacy. U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel Gorenstein said Friday he had authorized a warrant to be served on Google Inc for the emails of an unnamed individual who is the target of a money laundering investigation. Gorenstein said his decision ran counter to several other judges' rulings in similar cases that sweeping warrants give the government improper access to too many emails, not just relevant ones. But he sa…
