Hardware: The often overlooked aspect of accessibility
by Guest Steven Aquino- 0 replies
Steve Jobs was fond of saying often that if hardware is the brains of a device, then software is its soul. This statement is true insofar that software is what really makes a device and its ecosystem — one needn't look any further than iOS to see that — and is what designers, developers, and consumers care about most. In terms of accessibility, the fact that software gets so much (rightful) attention means that one crucial and, I would argue, just as important aspect gets overlooked in the discussion. The hardware. Assessing the kinesthetic, tactile value of using an iPhone or iPad is just as important as assessing the software it runs. Speaking from personal experi…

How to save pages to Safari Reading List Safari's Reading List gives you a place to store bookmarks to web content you'd like to check out later. Open Safari. Instagram launches Bolt picture messaging service, but only in select countries
by Guest Andrew Martonik- 0 replies
Following up less than a week after it prematurely let the cat out of the bag, Instagram's new messaging service, named Bolt, is now available for users in some countries. It's what can basically be described as a Snapchat clone, where you sign in and quickly send pictures back and forth between friends. You use your phone number to sign in rather than an email or Facebook account, and sending pictures to friends is just one tap away — there's no actual shutter button to press and review the image before it's sent. According to TechCrunch Instagram is launching Bolt in just a handful of countries as an initial release to work out the bugs in the app. Those countries in…

Plants vs. Zombies 2 gets wizardly in Dark Ages Part 2
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
Plants vs. Zombies 2 has had another content update, continuing on the original Dark Ages update we saw back at E3. Dark Ages Part 2 introduces a new boss battle, a new Arthurian challenge, two new plants (magnetshroom and peanut), 10 new levels, and both a wizard zombie and a king zombie who are bound to make your life difficult. Plants vs. Zombies 2 continues to offer a rich and (mostly) balanced take at freemium strategy. Players have to pick a selection of plants, gather sunlight, and find just the right time to drop super-powering plant food on their defensive lines. There are also gesture-based power ups if you need a hand with the particularly tough stages. Ot…

Free resources to make your job easier You know that creating brilliant content is key to driving traffic to your website. Without valuable content that engages your audience, writing blogs and posting to social media becomes a lot like throwing paint against the wall and hoping it sticks. You put something out in cyberspace multiple times a week and hope that your audience is reading it and becoming inspired enough to fill out a form or inquire about your product. Deep down, though, you realize this “strategy” is not effective. You know you need to publish content in the form of blog posts, infographics, videos or checklists that your audience craves. Taking charge: Chris Cortez’s journey from 2-star general to Microsoft VP
by Guest Suzanne Choney- 0 replies
You could call him “General.” Thousands of Marines did during his 33 years in the Corps. But Chris Cortez, true to his roots – the son of a father who picked fruit in the fields of Northern California, and whose devoted mother could not read or write – does not put on airs. It is not his way. Calling him Chris is just fine. His appearance is neat, tidy, spare. His hair and physique are still military style: trim and no-nonsense. Within minutes of meeting him, you know this isn’t a guy who suffers fools gladly. He’s polite and pleasant, and genuinely likable, but direct and firm in the no-uncertain-terms way of a Marine. It’s also quickly evident that he is a m…

Asana for iPhone and iPad gets massive UI update
by Guest Simon Sage- 0 replies
Asana's group collaboration and task management app for iOS has been totally revamped in an impressive way. It still lets users work together on shared projects, monitor deadlines, assign tasks, and fling related files back and forth, but the experience has changed a fair bit. There's now a home screen that gives you a quick, at-a-glance view of what tasks are on your plate for the day. Searching across all of your projects and team members is more readily accessible, and tasks can be easily reordered and prioritized by drag and drop. The update isn't available just yet, but keep an eye out for it. How many of you guys work in a team that uses collaboration tools …

Retina MacBook Pros get mild processor bump and pricing change; will Mac users keep buying?
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
A bit more than a week ago, Intel offered new Core i5 and Core i7 chips to augment its line of "Haswell"-era microprocessors. Apple wasted no time getting the new chips into its own production; on Tuesday the company introduced refreshed Retina MacBook Pros containing the new processors. Are Apple's tweaks to the MacBook Pro line enough to keep people buying them? Mild performance boost For people interested in performance bumps, this is a pretty mild change — a 200 MHz frequency increase across the product line: 2.4 and 2.6 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processors on the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, up from 2.2 and 2.4 GHz; and 2.2 and 2.5 GHz quad-core Intel Core i…

Tampa man charged with scamming $309,768 from Apple retail stores
by Guest John Callaham- 0 replies
Sharron Laverne Parrish Jr. of Tampa has been charged with scamming a total of $309,768 from a number of Apple's retail stores located in 16 states, according to recently revealed federal court documents. The 24 year old Parrish Jr is accused of taking that massive amount from Apple, in the form of merchandise, via a rather complicated scheme. He took a debit card that he knew had no funds in its associated account to these targeted Apple stores in order to "buy" devices. When the debit card was declined, he protested that there was some mistake, which then lead to many of the Apple store employees to call the bank. If there are in fact funds in the account, the bank…

Facebook reportedly making Messenger app mandatory for chat over the next few days
by Guest Sam Sabri- 0 replies

It was a few months ago that we reported Facebook would be killing in-app messaging. Facebook instead prefers users to chat with the dedicated Facebook Messenger app. Facebook is now notifying people that transition will happen over the next few days. Facebook hasn't posted an announcement about the upcoming changes. Instead they sent a statement directly to TechCrunch. Here's their message: "In the next few days, we're continuing to notify more people that if they want to send and receive Facebook messages, they'll need to download the Messenger app. As we've said, our goal is to focus development efforts on making Messenger the best mobile messaging experienc…

Best Mac games of July 2014
by Guest Peter Cohen- 0 replies
Now that we're almost into August it's time to take a look back at the best Mac games that were released this month. This month's releases include a great new Mickey Mouse game that's not just for kids, the Mac App Store release of Double Fine's resurrection of the classic point-and-click adventure game genre, and much more! Broken Age Double Fine Productions' pedigree is flawless — it's the game studio founded by Tim Schaefer, a LucasArts veteran who designed classics like Full Throttle, The Secret of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle. Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure game designed in that tradition: two teenagers seemingly unconnected are bound toge…

by Guest Rene Ritchie- 0 replies

4 or 4.7 or 5.5-inches — What's the perfect iPhone 6 size for you? If Apple holds to pattern the iPhone 6 will be coming out way this fall, and if rumors are true, there'll be not only a larger size, but two larger sizes to choose from. I've been writing about a bigger iPhone for years, and why I think it makes sense for Apple to do it this year. But what happens when it's a reality? What happens when you walk into an Apple Store and see a 4-inch, 4.7-inch, and 5.5-inch iPhone all sitting on the table. Which one do you choose? To keep things simple, let's imagine the iPhone 6 feature set is locked. You get the same camera, sensors, radios, colors, finishes, material…

One Android feature that never made its way to iOS may be the cause of one of the most worrying security exploits ever on the mobile platform. AppleInsider reports that Bluebox Security has found an Android design flaw that could potentially allow malware apps to take over someone’s device without requiring users to manually give the app permission to access their phones. Dubbed ‘Fake ID,’ the flaw allows the malicious apps to send fake credentials to Android, granting the app the ability to take on the form of another legitimate app that would have more extensive access to the device. Perhaps unsurprisingly, one of the trusted apps that ‘Fake ID’ can assume the ide…

Facebook may want to look up the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” TechCrunch reports that Facebook plans to take away the messaging feature from its core app and force users to download the separate Facebook Messenger app if they want to chat with their friends. Facebook has apparently been testing out using Messenger as its sole messaging app in Europe and has been encouraged by the results so far, TechCrunch says. TechCrunch says that the good news is that “mobile web, iPad, feature phone, Windows Phone, Paper, and desktop users can still message in their main Facebook apps or sites” for the time being and won’t be forced to use a separate app. WhatsApp use…
